Foxtail's Ongoing Painting Journey

Hey Fox....what going on in those most recent Instagram story vids...tell me, tell me...looks cool.

Haha, so the vids show the progression of shading/griming the Knight chassis with oil. A heavy airbrush of AK Interactive streaking grime over everything (with a very cheap airbrush) and then rubbing it off with cotton buds dampened with enamel thinners. You can go lighter than what I have done, but I want a heavy grunge effect.

It should contrast well with relatively clean armour plates.

Also got a little bit of hair on the sacristan. Need to sculpt on some sleeves before doing anything else. But getting close to completion now.

Cool, all makes sense. Just couldn’t make out exactly what was going on. Great effect....adding to the stolen list.

Fox...Grime looks good on the chassis. You used enamel thinner to remove excess. I have used Zippo lighter fluid more often. You use to thin for wash then you can wait until the wash is ready to remove.

I am still waiting to get a price for this beautiful Sacristan. Great mod sir.

You may want to wait and see how she turns out before you decide whether or not you want her USMC! Haha

Yeaaah buddddy you nailed. Props to this years most improved painter. Your killing it mate.

Cheers man, but I wouldn't say that. I have barely managed to paint anything this year.

A little verdigris on both knights. Oil paints again. Going to give this layer a few days to dry before hitting it with a gloss coat and doing some panel lining with thinned down black oil, then getting some light/heavy rust on the loyal/renegade knight respectively.

Making good progress at the minute!

Graishak, most of what I paint gets sold to a more deserving home. No point them sitting on a shelf at home when someone can be gaming with them and appreciating them.

Thanks a lot BaM! I was quite proud of the rat, but I can’t help but feel I haven’t done my best when I don’t spend hours feathering every little detail. I need to stop focusing on the mistakes I make on minis and focus on what I’ve improved on

Onwards and upwards

Oh, I see. So then you have just tons of pictures taken of your work (which is not occupying that much space *lol*).

Great looking metallics fox... I’ve been quite curious about these kind of techniques with oil washes etc, and have done a bit of research into, but have been a bit reluctant to give it a go. I guess this style is more suited for large flat areas etc, seems a lot better way to wash tanks etc, rather than point washing recesses and such. Awesome job mate, you have nailed that skill.

Holy Hannah. That verdigris on the brass really adds a ton to the knight. Not gutsy enough myself to start tinkering w/oil, but when I see some of the effects it does give me an itch. Working on something similar and that would add a ton.

Brilliant work :disdain:

That is one great looking leg! I have missed seeing your updates while moving, Fox. Your improvement is clear to see and it is great to seeing you cranking out more large scale miniatures. Keep up the excellent work!

Thanks guys, I'm pretty chuffed with how the knights are going so far, plenty left to do on them though!

Vibal/CC - I'd definitely advise having a go with oils if you're working on anything large scale, it just takes a small amount of forward planning.
I just gloss coat everything, then either spray oils (AK interactive or thinned down artists' oil paints) or brush paint them where I want. After they're touch dry go back at them with cotton buds/Q-tips dampened with thinner to get rid of the excess and smooth it out. Then spend several hours tweezering tiny hairs off of all the rivets!

The weapons are well on their way with the knights, but I'm busy with work this week so I'm on a bit of a go-slow.

I'll get some photos of each stage and post a mini tutorial.

What metallics are you using as a base fox?

Bloody love that powerfist....I've always had a thing for powerfists ever since pouring over the rogue trader rulebook as an obsessive 10yr old.

Vallejo Metal Colour for all the silvers. The metallic pigment is ground a little finer than most metallics so it's great for airbrushing, but too thin to really use well with a brush.
I'm getting quite particular with metallics: airbrush Vallejo Metal Colour, brush Vallejo Air, and Vallejo Liquid Gold for coppers and golds. Really pushing for that Vallejo sponsorship!

Nothing wrong with a powerfist bigger than a space marine. I like the idea of a knight having access to all sorts of exotic massive ranged weaponry that can vaporise enemies half a mile away, and choosing instead to run into battle armed with a chainsaw and a big fist.
