Foxtail's Ongoing Painting Journey

I would say you went above and beyond table top quality if I hadn't seen your display quality work ;) I'll definitely have to follow your airbrush batch painting techniques once I get Rising Sun and Green Horde next year.

Foxtail - Stellar work as usual! I really love that base and can't wait to see what you put on top of it. The Space Wolves look great which is no surprise since all of the ones you've shown thus far look really nice. I'm looking forward to how you paint the orc next. It really is a pleasure seeing you tackle these projects!

Look forward to seeing what you do with ze orc. Must be odd picking up someones half painted mini to work on.

Thanks everyone! Really does mean a lot after all those months tackling those Wolves.

Must be odd picking up someones half painted mini to work on.

It is. I got very frustrated with the fairly shoddy work on the assembly of the maw-krusha, so I organised with the client to buy a new one, start from scratch, and do the paintwork for free. It'll be my last commission for quite a while and wouldn't feel right to not make it a good one for a long-time client.

Progress on the base. First time playing with pigments and I'm pleasantly surprised.

Now I need to work out how to stop any water effects from leaking as I apply it.

Stick tack as a barrier keeping it in the areas you wish? Kind of like sand bags during a flood. I dont have any experience working with it so just a guess.

Pigments are easy to use and don't make much of a fuss I'm glad your seeing this and have expanded your tools. Great job on that base!!!

Thanks guys!

Guawol, that's exactly what I did. Had a few leaks with the first layer of water effects, but they seemed to plug the holes then. There will be a bit of delicate clean up once I take off the tack.
I've had a few issues with the water effects shrinking and cracking as it dries as well. The next layer covers it up but the base is so large that getting a level effect is going to take a while.

Made a start on the painting for the maw-krusha too. Everything is primed and the wings have had their skin airbrushed.

I'll be going with the standard paint scheme for Gordrakk, the Orruk character, but with some minor alterations. I find the maw-krusha they use is just too green. So I'm going to get some more natural, brown/green, skin tones on the non-scaled parts, and the wing membranes are not green at all.

Nice start! This model looks like it will be a pretty interesting one to paint, even though I still go a little cross eyed when I think about scales :p And good to know about the water effects in case I ever make my way to trying it out. I'd like to get better at basing but it seems so much more complicated then just painting, I pretty much through it in a similar category to sculpting. Again good work and I'm interested in seeing how everything comes out.

Base looks spot on Fox, hope the water effects pan out ok...not something I am used to using so can offer no advise I'm afraid.

I'm with Guawol on the big Dragony/lizard Dude...would be a bit daunted by the amount of skin n scales. Sure you'll do a great job though.

Thanks Hairster and Guawol! I always appreciate any feedback I get.

My attempts at basing are just guesswork and persistence. And lots and lots of Vallejo sand effects.
I keep flip flopping between whether to individually highlight the scales or drybrush. There can't be that many can there?

A few more pics from tonight's airbrush escapades. Everything has a good layer of gloss varnish on at the moment because I find shades flow so much nicer when they're over gloss. Inks will be applied tomorrow when the varnish is completely dry.

Not sure about the beige patterning. Might knock it back with a few green glazes after the shade.

A lot of distinct colours that need tying together.
