Elric's A.D.D. W.I.P.

So I have mostly lurked here since I've joined, but I figured it's about time I post a WIP, get some advice and get better at painting. So here are a few of my current projects, I have to be working on multiple things at once, else I get bored and sort of wander away from the painting desk. Also, I tend to paint fairly messy at 1st, going back to colors to clean it all up at the end, so I apologize for the random marks of color on parts of the fig, I promise they won't stay!

First up we have an Archon my gf wanted me to paint for her, just basecoated for now, except for the flayed skin thing, thats been shaded and semi-highlighted, and the fur on the back of the cloak. This color scheme was picked out by the gf, the cloak is black using the andrea black cloth basecoast. The armor is based in Twilight Blue from RMS, and the gold is VMC Gold
I apologize if the photo quality is bad, im still learning to photograph these things well

Next is a Death Korps test fig, basically trying to come up with a color scheme. Im very happy with the jacket and trousers color, but i had a hell of a time finding something for the helmet and chest plate. I ended up going
with VMC Dark Sea Blue, but i'm still not happy with it, open to any ideas at this point!

And lastly we have I think his name is Queek Headtaker, just a really nice looking model, love the dynamic pose. Hate the mould line on his weapon i missed until looking at that photo ><

The archon and Skaven are both finecast. Luckily the GW employee opened both packs for me and let me inspect them before purchase, because i told her how much i was burned on the 1st finecast model i purchased. Luckily, these didn't seem to have any miscast parts. The skaven is primed though, i always primer grey, i find it a happy medium between the too dark black and too bright white. Im thinking of going with an orangish brown color for the skaven's armor, having the skin be a darker grey color. I'll be putting airbrush to that model tonight hoepfully.

Been working on the skaven tonight, honing my airbrush skills which are still pretty lacking. I am happy with the color of the armor, the shadows are dark and i got that nice orange brown highlight I was looking for. Maybe I should color balance my WIP shots cause i dont see alot of the airbrush work i did :p

Tonight I finished the horns and the black cloak of the archon. I tell ya, i really really like my black cloth paint set from Andrea, because without it the cloak wouldnt look half as decent!

What Meph said....that black cloak is looking very nice indeed. I like the blue nuance you have in there a lot.

Here's the start of my metal shading and highlighting. I definitely need to go to a darker shade with the darks. It will end up going into a dark brown

Some more work done on the Skaven, the painstaking process of the eyes, basecoated the fur and teeth, and finished the skeleton

Thanks for the comments guys! I haven't posted in a while, but i assure you its not because I haven't been working! I finished the archon to how my gf wanted it to look, I dont like how it came out 100%, but its not for me to decide anyway :p

And here's what I've been working on since, 1st up is a large resin Witchblade model, really testing what I can do with an airbrush, which isnt much but hopefully will be by the time shes done!

Here's a very early shot of a wood elf, the cloak's basecoat isnt finished, takes alot of thin white coats to build up the right smoothness for this color

Thanks for looking! :)

Well if the Archon model is how the gf wants it - then you're golden. Personally, I would love to see more highlights and shadows in the armor and clothing, really get some pop going on.

An Witchblade!!!! Where in the world did you find that? I used to collect the comics! Witchblade and The Darkness were my absolute favs - have a huge stack in a box around here somewhere. Too cool!

That wood elf is one of my most favorite sculpts and wow that's some bright hair. lol! Great job so far!

i got her here http://www.e2046.com/product/6350

Don't say I didnt warn you, that site is addicting, they have some really wonderfully crafted large scale models. I found myself spending almost 200 bucks there once before i even realized what was going on.

As far as the archon, I had planned on taking the shadows deeper, but I have this weird habit of wanting to rush through things at the end, after taking my time with everything else I just want to get it done and start making mistakes, so i decided to just leave it alone instead.

The wood elf..ya that is some really bright hair, Im testing out the red hair triad from reaper master series. I think it might be just a little too bright for my taste, I was actually testing it on the elf so i could see what it might look like for witchblade, and its much too bright I think i'll go with a darker red for her. I think I may just devote my painting time to her, because shes been sitting on the shelf for a long while and I really want to see what I can do with it.

Thanks for the link! That Witchblade is definitely an anime/manga version whereas the original is much different. I had hoped they would have the original too but unfortunately not.

View attachment 8433

I have original editions, including almost all the variants of the first 50 comics - they don't even list those on their website any more.

I also have the original The Darkness comics including all variants of the first 50 or so....

View attachment 8434

And the original start up editions of Magdalena along with variants.

View attachment 8435

I stopped collecting because the artists I liked stopped drawing them and moved on to other projects. But I still have the originals all in the archival comic book storage stuff. You know the plastic, carboard, box, and all that stuff that keeps them from degrading. Speaking of which, I need to change that stuff out too. It's been awhile. I should get that stuff and take an opportunity to scan the covers into the computer while I have them out.

Oh yeah, just what I needed another project. lol!

Now if they would come out with unpainted miniatures like these...I'd be all over them. lol!

But despite the Witchblade difference, I'm definitely going to be cruising that site. Thanks for the warning too, I love anime and manga but my mini and horse hobbies have pushed it to the side. Only have so much $$$ to go around. lol! But I'll see if they have some of my favorites.

One thing I wanted to comment on - rushing through minis because you want to finish them. I had (and still struggle with) that exact same problem. I discovered if the instant, I mean the INSTANT I catch myself doing that, I put the mini down and basically put it away, and work on something else. I stop myself from doing that and can approach it more carefully the next day. In fact, because I want to finish it, putting it away is a sort of punishment for me. lol! It's actually teaching me to take my time the closer I get to the homestretch. Now I basically tell myself, take your time or you'll have to put it away, and the threat is good enough.

But you absolutely have to make yourself put it away the moment you catch yourself taking shortcuts or getting sloppy. If you let yourself slide, it doesn't work. I know, I'm strange, but hey, it works so I ain't complaining. Give it a try, it may work for you too. :D

Uhhh the anime Witchblade. I have looked and looked for a resin one of those. Have a completed version with insane hair and loooove it. I didn't like the anime series though, looked lovely but was not really my thing.

I have a soft spot for anime aswell. It started when i was a kid with the Robotech series, and took off from there.

My favs are Macross (Plus, Zero, Frontier) and Ghost in The Shell. Major Kusanagi from GITSSAC is my favorite anime figure.

I loved the witchblade comic too! I was a huge fan growing up, my dad got me into it when I was a kid and I only stopped once video games took over in my early 20s. I have all of the original witchblade comics, every Valiant comic that came out in the early 90s, as well as most image comics from that time period as well. I really liked the witchblade anime, but its just not as cool as the comic, but this figure was so well done that I just had to buy it!

That's very good advice about putting the mini down, and I think I'm going to give it a shot because I usually end up hating the minis i try to rush after spending countless hours on them. Thanks for pointing that out!

Marjedi - Im with you on Macross, that is a great series! Ghost in the shell too is one of my all time favs

:head desk: Damn I feel old! Shut up! Or I'll beat you with my cane! "When I was a kid..." he says...you're still a kid! You little whippersnapper! :rotfl: (I really am just kidding!)

Did you read any of The Darkness comics or some of the crossovers? (Jackie rocks!) The book I wrote and published...I was definitely inspired by Darkness but I did a lot of historical research before writing it so it's actually factual stuff. Of course, the hero getting possessed by living Chaos armor isn't factual but it runs along the lines of what people believed, the mythos, of the time. So while it's fantasy fiction, it's historically based.

Sorry - got off on a tangent there.

Gundam, Robotech, Macross, Ghost, ohh....remember Starblazers? Actually Space Battleship Yamato IIRC. LOVED that show - with the ship and its HUGE cannon.

I discovered another anime series awhile back, they had it on Saturday morning cartoons. But it required you to use your brain therefore was not popular and they canceled it pretty quickly. I searched the internet high and low and found video tapes. It's called Escaflowne. Had to order it from Japan and it took freakin forever to get here! Of course now it has it's own Wiki Page but back in 2000 trying to find it on the internet was a project all its own. At the time, all that was available was the VHS English subtitled version but those are usually the best anyway. I swear the English voice-over loses a lot in the translation. Hearing the Japanese vocal inflection just helps add to it.

Manga I've got Fist of the North Star, and a couple of other ones that I can't remember the names...good stories but nothing that anyone would recognize unless you're really into manga because it is obscure. I also have The Crow graphic novel. When I heard that Brandon Lee was going to star in the movie version and J. O'Barr was on board - I just about freaked. I was a HUGE Bruce Lee fan and Brandon was starting to come into his own so I was definitely following his career. I had a feeling, if they did it right, The Crow would be the springboard he needed to get out of the "B rated" movies.

Then tragedy happened. I know it sounds crazy but I cried for three days when I heard on the news he was killed. So very, very sad. Brandon and his fiancee were supposed to get married when he finished filming. :weep:

Oh man I especially like that 1st one. I told you it was addicting! :p I try not to go to that site but every couple months, im always trying to buy stuff off of there, luckily my gf is like "THEYRE NAKED, YOUR NOT PAINTING NAKED" You try telling her sheer does nto equate naked!

lol! Thus the advantages of being a female painter. I don't mind painting naked chicks. But it gets redundant after awhile. I mean are ALL of them naked with boobs-flying-everywhere - females? (Do you realize tattooed some where on that boob it says inflate to 40psi? Sorry bad joke. :D)

I realize women painters are a very small sect of the hobby, but it is a growing sect. We'd like to see more hunky guy sculpts now and then...just to know we're not forgotten completely.

That's very good advice about putting the mini down, and I think I'm going to give it a shot because I usually end up hating the minis i try to rush after spending countless hours on them. Thanks for pointing that out!

Look at it this way, what do you have to lose? lol! Just make sure you do it the instant you catch yourself. Sometimes I don't snap to the fact that I'm taking short cuts and getting sloppy. It's just not turning out like I want and I'm getting impatient and then it becomes a vicious cycle. I don't realize that the reason why is because I'm rushing. But I'm getting better about identifying when that happens, so there is hope. If I can do it, I know you can....you little whippersnapper. (I need to find an old lady smiley that's beating someone with her cane!)

lol!

BTW - your CMON handle is another favorite character of mine. Love the Elric saga!
