I think I just realized why I've never set foot in a real GW store. (besides the fact that I've never seen one.).
You can only play games here with our current product.
If the product is discontinued, you cannot play it here anymore.
If we sell a single run of a new game, you cannot play it here, it is "not supported."

Have I got that about right?
Just about, with the proviso that the single run will be played during the sales "life" of the game to promote sales.
After all GW isn't about games, it's about selling games.

I like the minis but Im just not sure on the replayability. I guess I'm so spoiled on games getting expansions and updates that when I see a standalone miniatures game I get nervous.

I think it looks great. And from what i heard from a m8 at GD a hoot to play. In the lighter end of games tactically for sure, but not so much as many fear. I welcome a board game thats fun, and doesnt take an hour+ to set up. I am a huge ffg fan, but setting up some of those monster boardgames becomes annoying fast.

Regardless of what anybody thinks about GW and their business practices, this is an awesome box. I just picked up my copies and cracked one open. The models are very impressive and the rulebook looks lush. Not fully gotten into the rules, but I've had a scan and it looks really fun. I'm eager to get a set painted up and have a go. Also, it looks like I can paint the whole thing pretty much on the sprue and then assemble it at the end, which is going to make things much easier, and I like that! :D

As someone far cleverer than me said on another forum, "Dreadfleet - cashcow of the high seas...".

I've ordered one though, because I can read the rules, fondle it for a while and then sell it on for a profit...:)

It should be renamed dreadfull fleece.

Finn I think you may be on a loser here. On quite a few forums people are saying its not really selling. I think we will see loads of copies turning up on ebay at first high in price, as people will think they have another Space Hulk on their hands, slowly when they realise these wont sell the price will come right down.

I may have been interested, but at no more than £40, which I bet if I give it 6-7 month wont be far off the price it will sell for.

Saying this, I hope I'm wrong so you do turn that profit. :)

The minis looked really nice, and a lot of them there were. Not entirely my cup of tea though, realised it even further when the only thing I could think of was how to incorporate the ships in a forced perspective 28mm diorama. ;)

We also made the observation that Warhammer is probably made up mostly of the element Skullium which every other element strives to become. Thus the "natural forming" cliffs and boulders.

My bad...

Poor turn of phrase...I'll never make a profit... never intended to. I suspect I might be able to check the thing out however and get my money back at some stage.

Looked at myself over the weekend.
Thought the models were 'OK' but nothing special.
Rule book looked 'limited' and full of Blanche's awful sketches.
Best laugh for me was when some said "Oh look a Harry Potter Invisibility cloak!" and draped the cloth round their shoulders.

Not for me.

"Skullium", like that.

Then you need Talisman - the ultimate fantasy board game. loads of expansions and its just a character card, a few tokens, shuffle the decks and go. Less than 5 minutes. If you have all the expansions like me the biggest woe is how big the pile of cards become, but I will be sculpting a solution to that, one day......

on this subject - the new edition of white Dwarf is just swamped full of the dreaded Dreadfleet, its like one big bloody advert. Im really thinking of cancelling my sub.
There used to be some good painting articles in the magazine but over the last 6 months its gone right down hill.

People who've bought it, answer me this......what's the mat made of? With it being refered to as a gaming mat earlier on I'd assumed a vinyl mat which can be rolled up and then lays flat as soon as you get it out (like leatherette really) however one of the promo pics showed it scrunched up so that it looked more like screen-printed silk. How sturdy a material is it? Does it crease? Could it be ironed flat? If you push a ship along it does it ruck up? Does it have to be weighted down in each corner? etc. :DJust intrigued, thanks, B.

I just received this in the mail and I am really impressed with the quality of the models. I think the books and cards are quite nice, too.

as Freakinacage said some cotton-y thing, definately not vinyl.
- for the first 2 questions: no idea, But I don't really think it's sturdy.
- it can be ironed.
- pushing ships isn't a great idea, it's better to pick it up and put down at the destination.
- yes it's better if it's weighted down

As for the content/price: I don't think it's as bad as it looks when reading through the forums. The cloth-mat is pretty nice, the cards also. And from the 10 big ships I like about 6 or 7, so even though it's a bit pricey (well, daaaa, GW) it's a good buy even if the ships go to the shelf only and you won't play ever.

There are already a couple of copies of the box on Ebay trying to sell for £135 / £140.......somewhat premature considering you can still buy it from GW for £70 and some Ebay sellers have it for slightly less.
