Definitions of Cool

Okay, this is my first post in the forums but I\'ve voted on over 2500 images. Through the course of that voting, I\'ve noticed a pattern in what I react to as \"cool\". The formula seems to be:

+2 boobs. I\'m a guy and I won\'t apologise for it.

+1.5 any significant conversion.

+1 figures from games I like (Blood Bowl, Mordheim and Fairy Meat in particular)

-1.5 GW\'s LotR figures. I can\'t help it, I hate \'em

-1 unbased figures

-1 WIP pictures with any paint. Conversions where you can see the putty and new parts used are cool, but \"I\'m not done with the face\" is no excuse. I\'d only post a figure I thought I was finished with.

-1 inappropriately clean NMM. This is most common in undead figures and ESNMM on armored figures with bloody weapons. For most of these, the artwork is great but the application is grating.

-2 anything titled \"another mini\" in any language.

These modify the actual quality of the paintjob so a properly titled, based and naked Mordeheim conversion that was painted with two colors of nail polish would probably outscore an Uruk-Hai with perfect ESNMM but no base and the title \"une autre figurine\".

I don\'t always adhere to this, but it\'s definitely a list of my voting trends. Just wondering if anyone else can objectively judge the quality of the art, or if it\'s as subjective for everyone as it is for me.

testing the formula...

So I have a WIP picture (-1) of Eoywn from the GW LOTR line (-1.5), I haven\'t based her yet (-1) and I have just titled her \"another mini\" (-2) I have finished the spotless NMM on her armor (-1)

BUT, I did significantly convert (+1.5) her breasts (ala AXEBONE) (+2) and I plan on her leading my next Mordheim adventure (+1).....

SO THAT MEANS YOU GIVE ME A (-2)!!!!

lollollollollol

You are one tough critic!!

Welcome to the forums!!

poor Eowyn....

Well, assuming her sword was bloody and the non-NMM parts were muddy I\'d modify the rating of her paintjob by -2, yes. Say the artwork on this figure was worthy of an 8, I would probably rate her a 6 because the mini is less \"cool\" than the paintjob.

Zaphod gets a +1 for being cool.

Now, if this were artisicminiornot.com it would be a different story. ;)

Anybody have a vaguely similar rating method?

So, supervike, where IS this Axebone-esque Eowyn mini with factory-fresh NMM anyway? Sounds interesting... I think we should judge it for ourselves ;)

TwelveMilesOut, welcome to the forums. Prepare to waste many more of your evenings. Re: your system, I can\'t agree with some of it, but at least you have a system, and it\'s not just \"GW/Space Marines ROCK!!!!1!11!! Everything esle = teh SUXXORZ!\"

Thank you all for the kind welcomes, and as for my evenings... :] I\'m at work right now. Evenings will continue to be consumed by painting (apparently mediocre) figures.

This isn\'t so much a system as a tendancy to react in certain ways to certain types of figures. I know I\'m not completely alone in this behavior, even if I am alone in recognising what I\'m doing.

From comments on various posts, people seem to react more favorably to figures associated with their chosen group/army/whatever. It appears a Blood Angels player will tend to score a Blood Angels figure higher than he would a Dark Angels figure painted to the same standard, for example.

I don\'t want to give the impression that I\'m behaving like a DMV tester here. I\'m just defining cool for myself.

First, welcome to the forums, I definately believe you get the award for longest and best thought out first post!!! That\'s one hell of a start.

NOw, as to your actual subject, in particular, your closing paragraph. I think that pretty much sums it all up. Judging artistic ventures is a highly subjective task. I don\'t care how much one tries to pretend it\'s not. While I don\'t see totally eye-to-eye with your espoused system, it ain\'t bad :D

I\'ve tried various times to codify the way I vote and why I vote and I\'ve seen numerous other people try the same. After everything, though, IMHO it all comes down to whether I like it or not and how much. I try my best to winnow out any prejudices and the like, but that\'s really what it boils down to.

Ah! Here we have two people who have succinctly extracted the essence of it all! :D

Mines certainly the HOLY CRAP system.
Seriously though I would hate to think I painted a great mini just for someone to deduct points because they like another line more. Please try not to be biased and judge each mini as it comes. As Ive said before it takes more than a perfect paintjob for a 9 or 10 from me,but it helps.Stick to your own systems though,Thats what I say.As for shiny axes and stuff on fantasy minis, they are fantasy, there are no rules, they can have clean nmm-senmm,they can have pollished choppers(oops).I dont think there is a right or wrong. And please dont start saying make up wasnt invented back then.
As for barbarians with shiny axes Ive just posted Cormac (shiny) Red Axe.47227
