What Runebrush said and also either a wet pallet so you can keep your mixes fresh for a couple of days, or a good dimple pallete and a damp cloth. Also a strong lamp to paint by it realy picks out the flaws so you can go over them. Also get the painting guide from this site as a pdf download its only about £6 and has all the tips and tricks well worth it. Oh yeah a 0 1 and 2 Windsor and Newton series 7 kolinsky brush. Simply the best accept no substitues.

What a coinsidence, I ordered a brush set from winsor and newton yesterday along with a wet palette :).
It wasn't cheap, ha..

Here's my Carnifex in a better resolution, talk about how a camera really can ruin a model?

Finally finnished my Cygnar heavy warjack's front, painted up abbadons face and one side of his sword.
I copied the glow from one of the models here on the forum but decided I wanted the demon holding the blade to be boney instead of golden.

here's some pics, it looks a bit darker then off camera

I am still not sure to make him have the red hair along with the green sword though.

I like the blue on the warjack. Abbadon is coming along nice. If you do not like the clash of the colors try darkening the green. But if you had to choose, i would get rid of the green as i really like where you are at with the hair and the face.

okay,

Can I use glazes over gold and is this common? if so, what kind of effect do the different glazing colours give?

You can use glaze over metallic paint, it works well. You can pick up any color with GW lahmian medium, It worked really well for me. I don't know the equivalent in other brands.
What I like with this glaze technique is that if it is really thin and the metallic appear through it and the glaze just tint the metal, you can add different colors to tint it differently.
I have used this technique in the below mini, it was more around silver but work well for gold:

looks really good, especially the shoulder where it's clear you've tinted the metal. It looks very nurgle to me.
Something that would look sick would be doing an entire unit of nurgle marines with that green tint to the armor, would definantely add a wow factor to regular troops.
Thanks for the advice too, guess I didn't thin the glaze enough hence why it came out looking really bad.

Anyway, I've been mixing and trying different ways to achieve a good contrast on my gold.. writing down notes in my new paintbook.
Found out a good way to layer through scorched brown mixed with shining gold and then work my way up from shining gold/scorched brown to mithril silver and washing with browns/blacks. Trying to achieve a dark gold look

I've also ordered a trygon which will be painted in a behemoth painting scheme.. to not get bored

Made an attempt at painting white cloth with light blue/grey shading today, took lots of time and alot of glazing

Though it looks more blue than white on the photo than in real lifeView attachment 16016

I've also ordered a Bloodthirster and a Trygon which I will paint up to continue pushing myself..

Yes that's the way but even more time and thinner paints and more layers. When you look at your stuff at the beginning of the wip and now you can see the improvement keep it up!

thanks krule, I still have a headache from painting his tail.
Sometimes I wish I didn't have the behemoth scheme when seeing some of the striking schemes here on the gallery..

I can't really play with it either.. since the model costs like 70 dollars :/

so lately I've been busy painting the classic sculpt of Bloodthirster, I just love the sculpt.. it got so much character.
I've dropped my safe method of painting red and just washing the model and instead used the basecoat as a shade and layers of
only mephiston red to give it a dirty red brownish colour.

I am nowhere near done with him but as I haven't been posting for quite some time I thought why not..
I think I should rename the thread to my progression thread or something instead
Bought quite a few models from Malifaux aswell, trying to step out of my GW bubble and paint other things

Here's some pics of the thirster in progress!

pics are quite dark, but that said the mini is looking good so far. Good call on the Malifaux minis, btw - there's some really nice stuff in that range. :)

did some drawing today... I think I might aswell pick up a drawing book and learn to draw humans, it
Would be really cool to be able to sculpt my own minis in the future..
I've noticed that my drawing has improved since I started painting these little dudes..
Also grabbed the courage to dry draw a female body completely from my imagination!
