Hi Everyone,

So i have been away from the hobby for quite a while now. But this weekend i decided to pick the brushes up again.

Last time round i was a bit of noob, so this time round I'm a rusty noob.

anyway I thought id start a project log off to post images as I progress in the hope that it keeps me motivated and that I get ideas as I go along and hopefully one day I might get the hang of this painting lark.

So for my first mini I have been working on this Rat ogre. Trying to remember how to do blending and I have also for the first tme ever been playing with colours glazes to enhance the flesh colour.

cheers for any feedback etc.

a little bit more progress, I have painted in the metal parts.

my plan is to somehow make the metal look grimy and corroded, not entirely shire how, but i imagine I will need some colour glazes and maybe some weathering powders.

open to any suggestions thought really. :)

also cant work out what the skin needs, darker shadows or brighter hi lights ? (or both )

I vote for both. Belly seems fine shadow-wise, but that might be natural shadows. I feel that the shadows there should be as dark as they seem in the picture.

Welcome to the forums.

The metals are looking good, as are the eyes and teeth. I think you need to pick out more of the hair. Not sure where you are going with the skin, undead or zombie like?

just my opinion :D

thanks for the comments. think they painted quite dark there so should be about right, just need to try get a handle on the others. i seem to be just undoing what I did before every time I do something :)

thanks, yes i did rush the hair a bit so will give it some more attention. I'm not sure on the skin tone either, I was aiming for sickly looking, but I think I got over zealous with things. I wanted my shadows to be blues but when I mixed blue with my base colour it went green, but I just kinda went with. but tomboyish is not bad.

this mini is really a practice run for a Nurgle demon prince I'm doing next, I thought id try out a skin tone to see how it works before working on the proper mini.

glad I did really as I know now not to start with the base colour I chose.

going good mate, loving the green tones to the skin really makes him look unhealthy, great job. although I feel a little contrast wouldn't go amiss on the skin, but its up to you.. paint it like u love it

Great job, nice work on the metals, The skin does look good but could be better with a touch more contrast :)(darker crevaces).

Thank you both for the comments. I have taken all that you say on board about the contrast. I had been finding it hard to gage but think I have my eye in now so thank you.

its been while since my last post, I've had a hectic couple of weeks with various things going on in the real world, but have found a bit of time for painting.

I finished the rat ogre, I didnt do that much more to it truth be told, I thought i better to just take what I had learnt and move onto another mini.

I have been finding for the time being its been working quite well for me to work quite quick and not get to caught in details as I did that last time round when I fist got into the hobby and ended just getting depressed and stopped painting.

So now I'm just practising and pairing and hoping that each new mini is better then the last one. seems to be working Ok so far.

Anyway I have finished another mini since my last post but it was not a great thing so here is an image or my latest WIP. This is a really cool mini to work on but quite a souring amount of details to with with.

Im not decided on the colours yet but possibly some form of blue for the axe and belt buckle.

anyway hopefully the contrast is better on the skin this time round but as ever I will be interested to read your crits.

cheers

Really like this mini. I have one somewhere that I've been meaning to paint. The skin looks great. I think he could use that last highlight on the wrinkles above and below his eyes - eyelids? Will give the face some more definition.

it was a great mini to paint, jut need to decide on what to do next, anyway this is the finished thing.

I did pluck up the courage to put my goblin in the gallery in the end (http://www.coolminiornot.com/379854) it seems to have faired better then I thought it would.

so today I started work on my next project. its swamp troll by privateer press. It looked a good model to work on my blending, plenty of bare flesh to work with.

I have the parts cleaned and glued together, next job will be some gap filling as the parts did not seem to com together that great. Looking forward to getting some plain on it it though

i manages a little progress this week. gap filling was done a couple of days ago. it turns out that gap filling is something that need more practise as It did not turn out great.

today I got the base coat done on the flesh. just now deciding on what colour to go with for the shadow, commence sense says dark blue, but I'm thinking a dirty grey with some green mixed in.

not sure through. I'm aiming for the finished flesh colour to blend between green and blue, but I cant figure out how to get there. any ideas?
