clear difference in taste

Hey guys,

Recently there have been talks about starting a Confrontation competition here in Antwerp and that has set me thinking of the possible opponents I might face in the near future.

A striking fact is the possibilty of running into the same army over and over again. Especially Wolfen and Griffons seem to be very popular, about 70% of the players has one of these two armies.

This saddled me with some questions. What makes these armies so irresistible? Why are armies such as Tir-Na-Bor Dwarves and Alahan less popular? ( I myself play with Alahan and it makes my mouth water every time I see an Alahan Knight) What is your favourite army and what makes it so special for you?

Good question, but first off, you will need to distinguish between three distinct categories of people who haunt this site:

Players

Painters

Collectors

Plus any combination of the above.

You have been round long enough to know that this is true, so you will have to temper your interpretation of the responses accordingly.

OK! I am a \'collector/painter\' Never played, never wanted to, never will.

I find the Wolfen/devourers irresistable because I guess I am just a doggie person. I also like them because of their size. I also like them because their sculptor is *mental* in the very best sense. His/her wild designs are either just so static and powerful or, dynamic and \'thrusting\' (for want of a better word) that I just have to buy them.

Undead and Sessairs appear to be very popular in my area. I chalk this up to the number of models available in these two lines. I think it is our duty to school these poor fools in the power of their neglected advasaries. I myself play Alchemists.

They look great, Dirz is my alltime fav, but I\'m a freak about wolves.

i dunno- i like the griffons, the undead and some of the kelts but i love the dirz stuff. they kinda remind me of the necromunda delaques though - you know with the goggles and all

I like to play the Werewolf the Apocalypse RPG and when I saw the wolfen I just had to start collecting them! They just look amazing. I also like some of the Dirz and orc stuff, but wolfen/devourers are my favorites.

I also fall into the category of collector/painter. No one here plays Confrontation.

It seems to be a bit of coincidence that most people in my environment play with Wolfen or Griffons. It\'s true what finn17 says about the division into three categories. I myself am player/collector/painter. I prefer Alahan to play with, but from a painting and collecting point of view the Sessairs (especially Fianna) are my favourites.

Anyway, thanks again for the replies, it\'s fun to know what other people play with and prefer.

Mid Nor all the way! The Despot will have nothing to do with those goody-gody Griffons (Okay, so I DID buy Mira, but that was because I collect the Limited Editions). I like the Evil Puppet theme, as well as te Voodoo theme that\'s in their to some extent. Since the new rules say I can ally with pretty much anyone whose evil, I\'m thinking of getting some models of other armies to use for better defence.

I also lke Goblis, but only the sailor goblins, and Cyanhur. It\'s kinda hard to base an army around either of those, as there is no other Goblin Assassins I could use.. I\'m just going to have to wait for the Cadwallon army to come out (with Rackham, I\'m going to be waiting a while)

Limited Edition Mira

Chrispy, can you tell us more about the limited edition Mira, how is she different etc. I have heard about her, but not seen her anywhere. She is not in the Rackham catalogue, but I know a lot of them aren\'t.

The figure and the rules are the same, but the pic on the card is a drawing instead of a photo.

It\'s the same with the other special edition figs, (not the same as limited editions) like Irix and .... hmmm don\'t remember others)

Well, actually my Shanys is the same way, a painting instead of a picture. I\'ve seen the cards for Le Corbeau and Drac Mac Syro as illustrations, too but I have the cards with a photo.. strange, isn\'t it?

My big beef with the sculpt is she has those tiny little arms with that huge sword, so she browke in the package! I already primed her, but I\'m going to get another soon to never open and gloat over (I\'ve done the same with Drac Mac and Shanys, one to paint and at least one to keep.)

I know what you mean about those arms. I got Corvus to paint mine up for me and normally I would have assembled and prepped myself. Ten minutes with those arms and I gave up and sent the whole lot unassembled.:bouncy:

Yeah, a bit wierd. I guess the first ones they sell are with the illustrations and when they\'ve sold those, they make cards with photos...

I got Le Corbeau with the illustration card. It\'s really neat

Thanks for the scan. I have seen her in the catalogue, but I have never seen her marketed as a\'special edition\' in any way. I just wondered if there was a figure with a different pose I didn\'t know about and should be hunting for:duh:

Rackham\'s marketing technique seems really weird. I bought a couple of \'UK special edition fiannas\'. Turns out that its the same mini as the mail order special. Now if I had paid top-dollar through eBay, I would be a bit hacked off.

I never buy special or limited edition anythings, just on principle.

Spec. Eds are just a gimick to jack up prices and or increase sales.

ive started putting together a sessair army, the main reason for this is really i like the fiannas( i know some dont),i love big breasted slender limbed woman carrying huge swords, so my reasons are purely aesthetic ones

Limited Editions vs. Special Edition

Limited Editions are miniatures produced in limited number and usually come number on the blister (1256/5000).

Special Editions are miniatures that are in normal production, they keep making them but are produced in limited numbers with an ART card.

Some Limited Editions are in fact also Special Editions. Shanys is a good example, and being the most recently released may mean that they will be this way from now on.

However, I have two of the Raven \"Le Corbeau\", one with a phote card and one with an ART card. Only about 500 were produced for a tournament in France and the last few sold on Rackhams on-line store. A very Limited Edition.

Drac Mac Syro is not a Limited Edition, but does have a Special Edition run. Once the Art card version are gone you will still be able to get him with a photo card.

Mira is a Special Edition NOT a Limited Edition. See my previous post.

Either way she is worth having, absolutely sweet to paint and to play with (in games). lol

Actually, if you purchase them from Rackham or a retailer, they cost the same as any like miniature. They are really just their to keep people interest and involved from the sellers point of view. Keep you checking the site/store to see if anything new comes up. Drive the urge to buy because I have to get it now as it will not be avaible again.

That said, they are going for big bucks on Ebay, so it is really the secondary seller making all the extra money on these.
