Basing

It's worth pointing out that many of these minis have very small contact surface on their feet. The pegs are nice if your base can accommodate them.

I'm actually a big fan of these hollowed out bases. They make it really easy to apply one of my preferred quick basing methods:

Ingredients:
- sand and/or fine gravel
- terrain putty (I use cheap wood-fill or spackle, but any self-hardening putty works)
- some kind of sharp tool
- cup of water
- bases, models

This works best if you do large batches at once, makes the cleanup easier.
1) push a blob of putty into the hollow part of the base
2) dip it into your sand and/or manually push stones into the putty
3) use your tool on the surface a bit to make some texture
4) wet your model's feet and press them into the base to make an indent for the foot/peg
5) allow the bases to harden, then glue the models on

I'm going to try this exact same method. Got a tub of wood filler ready to go. How long does it usually take for wood filler to dry like this? Does the wood filler stay in the recessed base without needing to glue first?

I think I will use the lip bases upside down, so I have more space to use for basing. I hope I will do basing this time, normal I avoid it.

How deep is the recess and what are the internal diameters please? Am thinking about using some cracked earth style MDF bases I have sourced to use as inserts.

I'd probably just let them dry overnight. Should be fine. Wood filler should stay in there no problem without help.

The lips on the bases are approx. 5mm high, and the inside is depressed all the way (just the thickness of the plastic between the mini and the table). The weight and type of plastic is similar to what you get with a base from Warmachine or Malifaux. The bases are 30mm, 40mm, and 50mm mainly, and the lip is only about 2mm thick.

The problem is that every miniature has pegs in a different place. Having been doing this for 30 years I have never had to do this for an army(ies) of this size. It took me about two weeks to prime, base, and basecoat everything Hadross. I am painting details now, but the basing thing threw me off because I too was not expecting it. I have a feeling most people will walk away from this game considering how much work is necessary to play. [. . .] This is a logistical nightmare building every army this way.

This hasn't been my experience at all. With 30+ years in the hobby, I'm guessing that you've had contact with all of the below:
- 15+ parts per figure (e.g. space marines)
- tiny fiddly pinning (old pewter Dark Eldar, or the old Satyxis for WM/H)
- brass rodding tens/hundreds of spears
- huge pinning, with every pewter monster model ever
- copious cleaning with resin
- filling air bubbles in resin
- cleaning horrific mold lines (esp. in soft plastic)
- cardstock / plastic hybrids (old 40K tanks, mordheim buildings)
- plastic models with metal banners (ugh)
- microscopic bits that can only be held with tweezers

... and the list goes on. I haven't seen anything to compare to the above with the WoK models I've built thus far. They seem to be relatively free of mold lines, fit together with little work, and few have more than five pieces per guy. I've been in the hobby for about 15 years, and I can identify multiple cases where a single model was more of a headache than putting together a Wrath of Kings army.

It is really unusual that someone with 30+ years has so much problem with putting the mini on the base.

I think Nico2828 gave use a good example to glue an army of 60 Hadross minis very fast on the bases:
I dipped the pegs ina spot of white glue, tapped the wet pegs on the bases to get a location for the pegs and I Dremeled the holes. I like the extra supprt that comes from pegs being in the holes. It wasn't necessary, but it only took a few minutes to do.

And also if you have inserts you still need to drill an hole in the insert. Inserts are really not needed. They can remove the time for basing, if the inserts are worth anything.

I haven't received my WOK minis yet but from the descriptions provided, I would use part or all of the pegs as a spacer on the base to keep the miniature from sitting too low and fill in with basing material. Those pegs will provide a good connection to the base and filler material so you can avoid the miniature and base separating.

Also, I really did not care for the inserts. You would still have to paint those inserts, which is a PITA, when one could use basing material that already has color. I really do enjoy creating an interesting base, which can be change of pace of painting everything.

Ya, I also do not understand why all the people who just want to game are complaining... If you were not going to do anything for basing anyway, why do you care if there is a groove or not? If your stated goal is to just assemble and play, the just clip off the peg when clipping off the other bits and glue it to a base like any other mini. Now if you usually so a more lazy basing scheme, like I have generally done in the past, just flocking or just painting it in an interesting fashion, I could see it being a touch more annoying, but, then just skip the lip entirely (or paint it black again after) and you'll be fine.

This will just allow those who want to do inserts to not raise the level a ton, which throws off the figure's balance, and, at least in my opinion looks silly too...

So it should be the lazy in between gamers that are complaining, not the pure gamers or artistic gamers, and frankly it's even easier for them, just pick a side, either don't care, or step up....

Again this is from someone's who has flocked a company of Space Marines, and about 10,000 points of Dwarves, as well as just painting the bases of another entire company.

For me while this was unexpected, and it would have been nice to know, I'll definitely agree, I'm looking forward to it as it'll really force me to step up my game and do more! that or just be lazy ;) But I think I'm leaning towards taking the challenge, especially given all the great ideas people have shared here and in the comments for cheap and easy ways to base them :)

Looking at the picture (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/1110/546163.page just scroll down), I can understand the frustration, it isn't so much of a groove as it is a ditch. While I agree that the bases can look somewhat silly with raised inserts on a regular (ie Warmachine/Relic Knights base), I don't see why the box couldn't come with standard bases and the 'enhanced' bases come in the same packages as the scenic inserts.

So the customers who just want to play are speaking out (I don't like to use the word complain when I think there's a legitimate argument) because they feel misled (looking at pictures on the kickstarter it is standard bases, with only some on the deep dish bases (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coolminiornot/wrath-of-kings/posts/571869) and so not unreasonably expected standard bases). Even if someone doesn't want to spend time basing their models and just wants to play, doesn't mean they're simply ok with this situation. Simple to fix or not, it is not about laziness, they just enjoy the game in a different way.

I'm not that bothered by the extra work, but I am a little annoyed at the 'surprise!' factor, and understand the people who are annoyed. But perhaps we shouldn't be surprised, looking at some of the recent pictures, I can just make out the deep base, but it was never specifically spelled out. I think it could be fun, or maybe I'll look into other scenic bases, but I can totally see how it wouldn't be for everyone, and if this is the way the retail package is being planned, I think CMoN can expect a grumble or two from customers.

There were a few bases used in the images that could have misled, however there were way more of the "deep bases" shown....they were just finished and looked flat. Look at all the infantry images, and the images from the beginning of the kickstarter, that have finished bases. All those bases, except two, have the deep bases. Even the word "inserts" means the inserts are placed inside the base.

Frankly, I would be more angry about the "dirt" insert the goritsi got....if I had ordered inserts.

CMON should have probably specificly shown what the unfinished bases would look like. And getting them to show what the unfinished miniatures would look like was hard too.

Cheers for replying but its the internal diameter and depth I need so I can source some inserts.

Just curious where you saw the bases? I haven't been able to find pictures of any. last I saw on the kickstarter the Goritsi bases were rubble and grave stones and whatnot.

Wow, is it just Goritsi that got screwed or did other factions get really lack luster bases as well? Seriously unacceptable. I will have to send these back or get an alternate or something because these are NOT what was advertised. This is the first time I am genuinely upset at this campaign. Of all the changes and delays this is just, upsetting and baffling. But most of all I am disappointed that I won't be able to assemble my figures right away as I will have to either A: wait for them to send me NEW bases or B: Wait and BUY new bases which I cannot do for a while due to my personal income woes. Why would CMON think this would fly?

Not sure about the depth, I used some 3mm MDF bases I had kicking around and it worked pretty well.

The Interior dimension however are:

- 30mm base - 20mm interior
- 40mm base - 30mm interior
- 50mm base - 40mm interior
- 80mm base - 70mm interior

I hope that helps.

Thanks Huron, do you 3mm thick inserts stick above the rim by much, if at all?

No problem. The 3mm mdf inserts I used do not stick up above the rim. There is about enough room for a fine sand between the top of the base and the top of the indent and start of the round lip.

One thing I find odd is the number of you that expected that CMON would source out two sets of bases; one with a recess for inserts and one without. In the TT community I've rarely seen even flat topped bases that didn't have glue and flock at the least added to it, and normally there is enough added to easily fill in the recess in these bases.

CMON hid nothing. The recessed bases can be seen in several pictures on the kickstarter page.

As for the Goritsi inserts, Mr. Black did on the kickstarter comments for people to contact CMON so they can work something out.
CoolMiniOrNot 5 days ago
Hey guys, Mr. Black here, and I noticed the comments on the Goritsi Bases.
So we tried to make sure everyone saw this during the campaign- The pictures of the bases shown were not guaranteed to be the final bases that people received. We noted quite a few times that it would be reliant on their ability to be cast as a single piece mold (since, at that time, we were venturing into that process before we moved onto the full run with the Micro Art Kickstarter)
The Goritsi bases specifically were not able to be cast in a single piece, more so, the original Groundwerks ones they are based off of didn't go very well with the Gortisi miniatures (the dynamic poses of the Goritsi combined with the smaller area provided by the Graveyard bases just didnt fit well together- too little space on the actual base) so they had to be changed.
If, however, you missed the comments about this throughout the campaign (understandable, as we're near 9000 comments) and are super unhappy with the Goritsi bases as they were provided then please contact us at support@cmon.com and we'll see about working something out for you.
