I have just read through it all and frankly, I have lost the will to live......

heh, li\'l bit over here too...

It\'s one of those threads that always pops up on painting lists from time to time, the same opinions surface, people think about stuff but no-one really convinces anyone of anything :) .

Me, I think I\'m in a minority of not thinking anything\'s \'art\' - it\'s mainly a semantic thing, I just don\'t think the term has any validity anymore. If it ever did :).

Some stuff\'s shocking.
Some is inspiring.
Some technically brilliant.
Some makes a comment on society/politics/other stuff that makes you think in some way (or not :) )
Some is just pretty.
Some has great historical significance.
Some was done by an interesting person - the person is the focus rather than the product.
Some turns a genre/industry on it\'s head.
Maybe it provides an emotional/visceral/etc response of some kind... maybe it just matches your walls :)
Could make a bold statement to the world, or perhaps just be considered vandalism

I think I\'m repeating myself, so I\'ll stop there - my point is, what makes any of it art, or not? Why can\'t it just be what it is without somehow having to be qualified with this fuzzy moniker?

Or is it just so we know what to put in galleries?

cheers :)
