40k Marines - Star Wars Themed

Like a lot of other people I\'ve got a lot of Marines, I was kinda bored and wanted to do something unique so I decided to start a themed army about 2 weeks ago. I\'ve known for a while that I wanted to do a star wars theme, there\'s a Trade Federation Droid army here Link I thought it was amazing but I didn\'t want to copy somebody elses work, and I\'m bigger fan of the classic trilogy than the new films.

Then I saw a piece of art that solidifed the concept I was looking for:

Star_Warhammer_40K_by_G1d4n.jpg

(The art isn\'t mine, but I thought it was very inspiring, its posted on Deviant Art)

From there all sorts of madness and converting has consumed me over the last two weeks. I\'ve been posting my WIP log on the B&C forum and thought I\'d share some of what I\'ve been working on. The idea is to run an army that\'s very heavily inspired by the star wars imperial army, it will play gamewise as a standard marine list with allied Inquistors.

These are still all in various stages of WIP. Yes I\'m perfectly aware they have mold lines and need greenstuff in some places!

All my time has been taken up with building and I haven\'t gotten to that point yet. They will be cleaned up before I get around to the painting.

There\'s additional pics on B&C as well as all my various brainstorming & ramblings etc in my work log: LINK

I haven\'t seen anyone do Boba and Jango before, looking great so far.

They used to have a big Imperial (as in Star Wars Empire version of Imperial) Space Marine army in the GW here. Had a bunch of \"storm troopers\" and a huge AT-AT made from IG sentinel legs and an SM land speeder for the \"head\", I forget what the body was done with, some kind of tank. Anyway, it was very convincing and VERY cool.

Think there were pics on the GW site, if anyone wants to test their google-fu I\'d imagine it wouldn\'t be hard to track down.

Anyway, nice work, I eagerly await more updates. Cheers.

Looking good :)!

Are you familiar with Bruno Rizzo\'s similar project?

Very cool, I cant wait to see a unit of storm troopers finished, since the converted helmet works pretty seamlessly with the SM body.

I hadn\'t seen those before, very cool I\'d been trying to figure out what I wanted to do with vehicles, had thought about making a shuttle and AT-AT but wasn\'t sure how well they\'d come out, definately going to have to borrow some of his ideas. His army looks great I wish there were some close up pics though as a lot of it is hard to make out.

The storm trooper heads have had mixed reactions frm people, some think they are oversized, some like it as is. I got them from dark troopers from star war minis, as standard trooper heads are much smaller. More peopel seem to dislike the small heads than the big ones, I personally like both versions but I\'d prefer to stick with what works best for the model.

Pics of the head comparisons are listed in my WIP log here: LINK

I have 10 troopers finished and awaiting heads, but trying to decide on which ones before I mount them permanantly.

Also I\'ve changed the paint pattern since the original test model, the bone has been mixed much lighter here what the updated pattern will be. Reason I didn\'t use a pure white scheme is that it looks too flat on the table.

Totally loving the Vader and bounty hunter models, infact it all kicks ass! Nice work on the AT-ST.

I can see how Vader will fit into a SM army, but what role will the bounty hunters take on? Assault Marine captians?

P.S is the cape from the Empire commander sprue? I was thinking of getting one and was wondering how it would fit on a marine, looks nice!

Vader\'s cape is from the empire general, you\'ll need to open up the neck area a bit and leave off the marine backpack but it fits well.

The bounty hunters will be imperial assassins, as Vader will be played as an allied Inqusitor or grey knight grandmaster, that\'s why Boba Fett has a heavy sniper rifle where he normally uses much lighter weaponry in the movies.

Jango I did simply because I was happy with how well Boba turned out and I like his character, although he\'s technically not part of the imperial era. I\'ll probably be using units of Mandalorians as my assault squads, he\'ll have Jango\'s colors but could easily be another Mandalorian who happens to look like him. No special stats in mind unlike w Boba

@paulson : I couldn\'t find better pics, but Bruno\'s army was featured in an old White Dwarf (at least in the french edition) and the pics were better there. He mostly used cadian heads with respiratory systems. I too prefer the bigger head versions of the stormtrooper helmets. The smaller version looks like it\'s the size of an uncovered head.

Yesterday turned out to be a complete bust.

I had a double shift at work so I figured I\'d have a total modeling marathon, (as that where I do the majority of my work). But I was a retard and apparently grabbed the wrong box of bits leaving practically everything I needed at home. So I couldn\'t tackle the Emperor model as I planned or tinker with the scout bike, the only project I could work on was my second At-St, I needed to work on it anyway but I could only complete part of it as all the weapon bits were left at home. grr <_<

So rather than have lots of stuff to keep my busy as I\'d planned I ended up with massive surplus of time to kill and no models to work on :(

I did have some bits with me so I dug through them hoping I could find something useful, sadly I didn\'t find anything inspiring, but I happened upon a rather odd discovery. At some point a while back I was hookwinked with some fake bits from ebay. I found a set of landraider las cannons & sponsons in the bits box that was much darker than the other parts and it had a strange waxy type film on it. As looked a bit closer I noticed the details and lines were also a bit off. I tried to scrape off some of the film and the plastic started peeling up in fine layers instead of scraping smooth. Looking at the inside of one of the pieces there I could see where the plastic hadn\'t mixed right and there were tiny black swirls.

I bent one of the pieces until it broke and rather than stressing turning white and snapping the plastic crumbled apart, it almost like it\'s made from hundreds of layers ontop of each other really weird. No ide who I got it from as it\'s been in the box for a couple years but if I knew I\'d report them to GW.

It\'s not much to show for now but here was my only real progress today, walker #2 in progress:

at-st1.jpg

I did manage to win a fairly cheap AT-AT toy on ebay which I should be getting later this week. It\'s monsterous (26 inches) so I\'ll be using it as some sort of titan, probably either an emepror or warlord. It dwarfs a warhound titan which is only aboout 11 inches tall. I\'m going to have to figure out what i need to do to 40k it up effectively, obviously it\'ll need weapons and eagles plastered all over. Not sure if I should try some city fight stuff?

Here\'s a shot of an AT-AT next to regular star wars figures (which are almost 3 times as tall as 40k figures) Marines won\'t even come up past the first part of foot, so it\'s absolutely massive. I\'ll have to get a pic of it next to a titan and with some 40k stuff around it to show just how huge it is.

Well, you could use the main body of that AT-AT to build a big dropship out of it, or use it as a body for a big tracked command vehicle, like a little Leviathan.

I\'ve been mocking up some rough ideas of what I want to do with the giant at-at, if use it as a stand in for an emperor titan it\'d have a number of hull mounted weapons, and the current design of the at-at doesn\'t reall have much room for weaponry as it\'s fairly narrow in width despite being very tall and long.

I could widen the design and add turrets on the side to acomidate destroyer sized weapons. According to the str wars expanded universe there is an even bigger version of an at-at called the AT-HE, All-terrain heavy walker or super heavy at-at, which mounts star ship sized turbo laser batteries, which in mind mind is a perfect translation for apoc destroyer weapons.

Here\'s a rather kicking piece of concepot art for a AT-HE

imperial_walker.jpg

Here\'s a side shot of the concept I have in my head in part based off that art, the rear cannons would be supported by an assembly that looks kinda like the shoulders of a warhound titan but the cannons would be mounted above the structure rather than being underslung like arms. (simular to how teh shoulder cannons are on a warlord titan) The front cannons would be mounted in a boxy type turret.

atatconcept.jpg

It\'ll require adding a 3rd set of legs and expanding the overall length and width to give it an even larger size, a rough estimate would place it between 30 inches tall & 35-40 inches long!

Here\'s a size comparison to show just how huge it\'d be.

So the amusing part of having modeling ADD is that whenever I sit down intending to work on a set project I shoot off in random directions and it\'s never what was intended. It can be good in that it\'s always acompanied by a rush of creativity but it can be highly aggrivating because I can\'t finish the parts I planned to. Tonights plan was to finish the stormtroopers and the probe droid, and instead I made the emperor, go figure.

emperor40k.jpg

The wrinkly old man just doesn\'t work as a butt kicking marine, so he\'s not as true to form as he could be. I can always lie and say he\'s the emperor\'s young buff clone that takes over after return of the jedi. Oh well some things won\'t quite mesh but that\'s ok as the project goal is to capture the overall feel not to do a direct carbon copy of star wars.

He\'s still WIP, the pointy finger power glove is so overused and I know I can do better, so his hand will soon be on the recieving end of my dremmel. I\'m going to removed the clenched part of the powerfist and replace it with a powerfist hand that\'s splayed open to shoot force lightning. Would have started on that tonight but I forgot my styrene at home, oops.

His head is tilted as far forward as I can take it without it looking like he has a broken neck, the intent is to grant the hood a deeper concealing shadow this will be aided by the painting where I\'ll be keeping everything from the nose up very dark so he disappears into the hood and give him yellow eyes. I\'m going to try painting him as though he were underlit aka \"monster lighting\" to give him a creepy air to him.

I gave him the same sword as Vader so that it helps tie them together visually as Sith lords and I also like the AOBR sowrd a lot for some reason. Like Vader his sword will be painted red (of course).

I would like to say well done.

It has inspired me to attempt making my own star wars themed army.

Ok how did you make the heads and bodies for the Fetts? They look awesome.
Good Work
