Reaper Dwarf Balan

This is a Bob Olley sculpt from Reaper - great sculpt! I painted this for one of the players in my D&D3.5 game a while back. Late 2005 maybe? It came out quite a lot shinier than I had hoped. Maybe I'll hit it with Dullcoat one of these days. I do like the highlights on the face - this may have been the first time I was seriously trying to capture the way the light hits the nose and cheeks.

The face is great, but the grittiness leaves once you've gotten to the clothes. For some reason I'm reminded of the artist who does the covers for The Wheel of Time and The Runelords books, sure he (or she) is a good artist, but the characters look like they're going to the springtime ball, not going into imminent danger. I've found dark green and blue to be two of the hardest colours to make look good - and I still can't do it. There's a high gloss (or it's an artefact of the flash) that also takes a lot away from the mini.

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! It's been a bit frustrating for me watching the votes come in with no indication of why people chose the scores they did. I'm here because I am eager to improve. Please folks - tell me what's wrong and how I can fix it. Don't hold back, I want the truth, not a pat on the back. Thanks again, GreenOne. BTW, I love the caparisons on your Bretonnion horses.

I saw a lot of your minis today, so I'll give a general comment. There are good points on each of them, but on close pic it's not very eye pleasing. For instance, on this one face looks cool, the eye lets think you got some brush control, but the 3 tonal clothes and bare metals bring this one down in the 4ish. You should take advantage of all the knowledge on this site and take a few crucial step in improvement. In a nutshell, paints NEED to be thinned, drybrush can only take you so far and metals need some extra tought or they look nasty. Hope this helps
