Yeti’s Guild Ball WIP

Hi everyone,
I took up painting a few years ago after a long break and have been painting on and off since then. You can take a look in my gallery to see some of my progress.

At the moment I am painting a Brewers team and a number of other models from the excellent Guild Ball range and am using the opportunity to work on my painting and try to get my skill level up. In the past I've followed a fairly strict base, wash, highlight routine but am deliberately trying to break out of that to learn some new skills.

I thought that I'd start a painting log here to keep track of what I am doing and hopefully get a bit of feedback from some of the excellent painters around here.

Unfortunately the bulk of my team is still sitting in the postal system so I've started with some Union players (mercs) and an additional Brewers character that I bought separately. Since the Union can play for multiple teams I decided not to paint them in the brewer’s colours but rather to paint them all as individuals.
I have already finished Rage (Union) and Stoker (Brewers), which were great fun to paint and each taught me a lot.
----

My first model in this WIP is Hemlocke, another Union, she is a hermit/wild woman so I'm going with very earth tones. If everything goes according to plan her skin is going to end up a nice light brown (my first attempt at anything other than generic caucasian). I’m going to try to shade her with as little wash as possible, working both up and down with glazes/thin layering.

Here is how she looks at the moment. Base coat is done, ready for some shading/highlights.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Yeti

Almost Perftec! Aw, crap.
Love the start. I did a whole assortment of skin tones of the pirate avatars for my office coworkers a few years back. Turns out even ethnic skin tones have different bases like orange or olive. The hardest one to do tuned out to be my friend Jovan who has a stunning caramel complexion that almost drove me mad trying to replicate O_O

I think that's what Yeti's aiming for with her - a creole skin tone. Well....it's what I'm trying to convince him to do.

Thanks Zab. ArchArad is right, I'm broadly aiming for a light caramel complexion. Since I'm not directly trying to replicate an individual I have a little flexibility.

I'm afraid that I haven't made a very good start. The plan was to base in a red brown then work up with a more yellow colour before highlighting with a caucasian skin tone.
It looks like I applied the yellow brown too thickly so I've lost the warm glow I was hoping to get from the base layer. I'll carry on experimenting for a while to see if I can pull it right but I might have to mulligan and start over.

Thanks Digganob. :)
I'm afraid I haven't had any time to paint in the last week or so. Hopefully I'll have something to put up early next week again.

Heh, it's been a pretty crazy few weeks and I've had almost no time to paint. Unfortunately this is bad news for poor Hemlocke because my core brewers have finally arrived and she is unlikely to see any love until they are finished... and by then I'll probably have another project. That's what happens when you let a painting project lie for too long...

I still won't believe they've finally arrived until I see them! I know our postal system.

But hopefully we'll be seeing more action here now that some of the Real Life madness has died down. After all, I maintain that you are the reason I've become a miniature painting junkie in the first place! I'm suffering from painting withdrawal - assignments and sick are not a good combination. :weep:

Okay. I believe that they have arrived and I think they're very cool.

Now, where is your WIP update so I can keep tabs on your progress? :p

Whew, it has been a long time since I have managed to paint. All in all there has just been way too much real life for my tastes.

The good news is that it looks like it might be clearing up a little... and this time I actually mean it.

I have got my new brewers together and got them undercoated. Unfortunately this brought out some pitting and a few pesky mould lines that I didn't notice before so I've got a little more clean up to do before painting actually starts, but it won't be long now.
Here are the models as they stand at the moment.

I think they are fantastic models. Nice and charismatic with a good deal of detail. I'm very excited to finally start painting them. If you are interested in seeing how cool the really are check out Gorock's awesome studio job or the most recent stuff in JTY's gallery.

With all the assembling I've been doing, I did actually manage to get my brushes out last night and... nope, not going to say it.

Quick paint job to get my eye back in (even if I do need to take the highlights up a little)

There you are! *pounce*

Gorock's team looks amazing! Shows the minis off in a great light. Trouble is that it teeters on the delicate fence between "inspiring" and "oh my god I'll never be able to do that".

Looking forward to seeing your guys and your...um, spherical gaming devices tonight.

Yeah, he's doing the official studio painting for the game... not really a fair comparison. :)

Hey Digganob,
Yup. They're from Guild Ball. It's a gridless sports skirmish game that was Kickstarted last year and seems to be picking up some good traction in the UK.
It's actually a fantastic range of models in general. Here are some more of Gorock's official paint jobs (not covering the entire range unfortunately)
Fishermen
Butchers
Morticians
Brewers
Engineers

I don't know what part of Florida you're from but I understand that Armada Games in Tampa carries them.

Yea I really like some of the guild ball minis, they are in the process of rolling out season 2 minis so I'm trying to hold out to see some of those but I may give in and get the fisherman starter set soon, working on the butchers starter set at the moment though

Hey Sicks, I think I'd jump into it if I were you. With the staggered release they're going with it's going to be months before season 2 makes a real difference. I'd probably flesh out the butchers before picking up another starter though. Tenderiser is out this weekend after all...
