Winsor & Newton Series 7

Time to throw my crappy GW brushes and get some real ones, Series 7 seems to be the best of choices (and yes, i am willing to pay 140$ per brush) but my question is:

which ones? I was thinking the 00 and 1 would be good, one for details and one for blending/highlighting, I will keep my GW standard brush for basecoating though.

So, is the 00 and 1 good choices or should I reconsider?

yep. Fine choice........

00, 0, 1 are good for me..........

1 is the one I use the most and maybe a 0.
00 still gets used.

Yes, you cant go wrong with these fine brushes, I use the miniature ones and the longer haired ones. 00 0 1 is a great choice. They have such great points that the 0 is fine for detail work, although I use the 00 for eyes.
make sure you get some soap to clean them and dont get paint in the ferrule :D

Theres a thread on here where you can get discount brushes from US.

Totally agree with Krom, Orb and Sonnyslayer.

My W&N\'s have lasted me for years, (one\'s close to 10 years old) simply by the use of Brush soap and not using them to mix paint.
I would suggest that if you can afford it that you get two of each brush as sometimes during a protracted painting session some paints have a tendancy to carry over to the next colour. (Ok I know I should use the brush soap straight away but when you\'re \"on a roll\" you don\'t want to stop).

If you want to buy Series 7\'s, and you have no local outlet that sells them, try >>DickBlick<<.

Another reason to buy more brushes of one size, is if you intend to use them with metallic paints. You don\'t want metallic flecks appearing in your normal paints. I\'ve also heard (or read) that metallics can damage Kolinsky hair, so I use cheaper brushes for metallics (W&N Sceptre Gold).

I clean mine with standard shampoo and conditioner. Otherwise, everything that everyone else has already said, and what everyone else said about what everyone else said too. :D

Already been said here but I\'ll chime in too...

I use W&N 7 size 0 for everything from eyes to cloaks. Will probablly add a 00 and a 1 soon, but you can\'t go wrong with the 0.

awww :( poor minks :(

(or whatever animals the hairs come from)...

And yes, I have the series 7 (miniature and regular versions) along with Kaple\'s brushes, and Escoda Tajmir Kolinsky sets, but also have some good synthetics as I\'d prefer to get away from the natural hairs if the synthetics got good enough...

@ StarFyre: Man = Apex Preditor (not Crocs as Steve Irwin used to point out). :drunk:

But seriously... No sables (mink family) are harmed in the process of brush making, given the value of their fur (Kolinsky Sable Hair = Roughly 3x its weight in gold) I\'m sure they are quite well cared for.

If I\'m wrong (about them being well cared for) then back to my first line. :drunk:

*sigh*

humans = stupid in many respect

which is why we deserve any bad things that happen to us (war, famine, disease, death, suffering, natural disasters, etc).

(aren\'t I a happy person :D )

btw: it\'s spelt \"predator\"

I don\'t use my W&N brushes for simple basecaoting, just for blending/highlighting/details. For simple basecoating or bases I use my 2, 1 or 0 synthetic brushes. I think the W&N brushes are all to \"pointy\" to paint large areas. My synthetics work better for this kind of job. :D

Maybe up there in snooty Upper Canada it\'s spelled \"Predator\" but down here in the maritimes... Oh wait, it\'s \"Predator\" down here too... ;)

I pretty much use a WN7 mini size 1 for 99% of everything I paint, the only exceptions being brush on primer and maybe an occasional freehand detail. I do have 2 brushes also just because of using metallics, as the flakes do tend to carry over, which is the same reason I have 2 water bowls also. :)

Received this reply to an email I set to Rosemary&co., in respect to another thread:

\"Dear Bill,
Thank you for your email.
I purchase Canadian & Russian Kolinsky & Sable Tails. Both are from family
businesses that I have traded with for over 20 years and indeed have visited
on numerous occasions. The animal is bred for its meat and pelt, the tails
are a byproduct. The animals are treated in as humane way as possible. As an
animal lover I can vouch for this. I could go into lots of detail but I\'m
afraid time is precious at the moment, we are busy busy making for christmas
would you believe.
I hope this answers your question and I remain,
Yours With Regards
Rosemary\"

Why do they cost $140

I am positive that I bought 3 W&N series 7 for about 25 dollars, including shipping.

Are we talking about something else?
