What makes a pro painter?

It really gets my goat when people say somehting is pro painted (on eBay!) when I think it is total crap.

Now having said that what makes a pro-painter?

Well, what do you think?

Is it the standard of painting?

Is it simply the fact one is/has been paid to paint - thereby your profession is as a painter if only part time/one off?

I don\'t think it can be the standard alone - although it needs to be good enough for people to want to buy the models! After all some pro painters on here rarely get 9s or 10s, but they make a living. Likewise those that do get 9s and 10s don\'t always sell the models, and given the time and effort put into them probably do not get a sufficient financial return to make a business out of it.

I mean if someone describes a model as pro-p and it sells is it deemd to have been sold for its painting standard? Does it depend hat the customer does with it? If I buy somehting \'pro-painted\' and then strip it and repaint it, does the painters claim lose validity.

what do you worthy chaps and chapesses think?

It\'s been done to death this subject :D

A pro is someone who does it for a living. If half the numpties who use the term on Ebay did it for a living, they wouldn\'t last very long!

your thinking about this too much.

pro, as in proffesional painter is some one who does it for a living.
standards have nothing to do with it, they don\'t even command how much you can charge (trust me, some people could sell rabbit shit for a couple of hundred just because of their rep!)

most people put pro painted on their ebay auctions because it\'s one of the things ebay tells people to do to get better sales, just like people wrighting LOOK in the title of their auctions.

quite simple realy.

well, you all look at it from the painters perspective... it\'s a right pain in the rear to find nicely painted minis on ebay.

If you\'re all so very clever and smar, think up a universal search term that finds all the nicely paited minis :p

I didn\'t think so lol

Literal definition is pretty simple, somebody who does it for money. Doesn\'t matter how good they are.

The connotation definition is, somebody who paints to a high standard.

Caveat Emptor. Those people who utilise the \"Pro-Painted\" tagline are targeting an audience who may simpley be unaware of quality painting such as seen on Coolminornot.

Now having said that what makes a pro-painter?
My definition of a true Pro-Painter is someone like generulpoleaxe who not only paints pieces for a Speculative Market but for Commission matching what his client wants to the timescale specified.

I do agree however that the Term Pro-ainted is grossly abused as an Eye-Catcher for Ebay.
And I think that most people who have \"haunted\" Ebay looking for bargains have encountered some dire painted figures.
Some of us have even bought these figures to strip thereby regaining the mini a little bit of it\'s former dignity. :D

However, until there is a recognised body for miniature painters with formal standards for admission (somewhat like the Royal Photographic Society\'s awards) then ebayer seller are quite entitled to use(or abuse) the term Pro-Painter.

yeah, pro-painter doesn\'t seem to carry much water if you\'re lookin\' at e-bay...
i think most of the people who label their stuff \"pro-painted\" need to be dipped to regain a bit of dignity!!!
a guy who does quality work, knows that he does quality work, and calls it good...

personally, a professional painter is a person who makes a livin\' from paintin\' minis...as has been said, they don\'t even have to be top quality minis to qualify as pro-painted...some commission painters make a livin\' off dippin\' and drybrushin\'...

now someone who paints minis for the different manufacturers out there is on a whole different level...as a freelance studio painter, it\'s a tough road... everytime i would send off a new piece i would wonder if there was gonna another job comin\' after...every mini has to be as good, or better, than the last...it\'s tough to keep raisin\' the bar, and deal with deadlines, while not bein\' able to choose what mini to paint, or what colours to use...

so pro-painted/pro-painter is pretty meaningless...industry painter on the other hand is what most of us daydream about, but few people achieve...who doesn\'t wanna see their minis in the rulebooks that everyone drools over???

cheers

This just occurred to me...

Those little 7 year olds in China painting the D&D minis and other such assorted crud actually do qualify as \'pro-painters\'. Put that \'pro-quality\' in your pipe and do whatever it is you do when you have some daft term in your pipe instead of tobacco.

I agree with Chris that the term can be used by anyone who paints a model and sells it on ebay for a profit. I consider myself to be a pro-painter but I only paint part time . . . every day usually but only for a few hours during the week once I get home from my \"paying the bills job\". I consider my \"real job\" to be as a painter.

Technically by definition that would be incorrect however. To be termed \'professional\' one must actually make their living at something or at least enough to be called a living. $50 bucks a year in profit does not qualify, nor for all practical purposes would even a few thousand, though arguably that would at least start getting close.

Yeah but that\'s 2 things already and there are loads of others.

so until there\'s a perfect solution pro painted will do...

as a side note, this came up under pro painted: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WARHAMMER-40K-ELDAR-HARLEQUIN-PRO-PAINTED_W0QQitemZ330230211646QQihZ014QQcategoryZ44117QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

sooo nice!

If we want to get down to the nitty-gritty on the definitions:
professional (adj)
following an occupation as a means of livelihood or for gain.

Actually, that definition of a professional only applies to people performing a sport. Not a skill.

And ebay is just a big glorified flea market. Counting selling stuff on eBay making you a professional is laughable. I may as well sell my minis in a garage sale and dub myself a professional!

And drink! :D

Just to remind everybody. There is a purpose for these minies that we love to paint. This purpose is to be used as game pieces. While it might sound heretical to some this is how 95% of people use them (possibly 99%).

Now, there are GW tournament guidelines according to which minies must be painted with at least 3 colors. It doesn\'t say they have to painted nicely or imaginatively or neatly. All it says that you have to have 3 colors on a mini. So, I am sure that \"pro\" thingy on e-bay would satisfy this 95% of customers who uses their minies as game-pieces only.

As you can see quality is not in a picture. I don\'t even think that people who post these armies even make such a claim
