The only problem I see with "guidelines" are that judging is rather subjective. I might place a higher emphasis on freehand and subtle shading, while you might prefer more highlighting and more conversions. The way I judge won't (and shouldn't) be the same as you.

Very true but there has got to be some common ground that is judged on every piece. also if there are guidlines wouldnt that take away some of the subjectivness? but then that too poses the question of how much will that take away from someone doing something new and innovative on a piece because it wouldnt help the score as much.

in my case in particular i had to go to the forums before i was able to figure out what i needed improvement on the most as noone posts comments when voting. when comments are posted it is ( and this is my opinion from what i have seen thus far) usually a greatjob for a 9 or 10 score or just a "this is terrible" for a 1-3 score. it is nice to know what voters lik/dislike specifically in a mini.

I also just want to say that i'm not salty that i got a low score. i actually am glad to get one because if you are getting all high scores ones mind tends to get into the groove that there isnt any room for improvement. i have ALOT of room for improvement but i was frustrated as to where to start as i look at my work all the time and the opinions of those around me locally are just wow thats cool, as they dont know hav any background or frame of reference with the fantastic pieces on here. hopefully everyone understands what im trying to say.

Use the three 'P's -

Practice - Persistence - Patience (which I have none)

I got 5.4 on my first vote, well happy with that, thought I would get a 2 :)
