WH40k Company Captains Diorama Dilemma

Hi, I would like to make a diorama with the ten company captains as I am intrigued by the paradox of ultramarine “fluff”.
I am well aware that kids who first play the game either make an unconverted ultramarine army or a tragicomically bad custom paint job (e.g. pink and black), so UM have a “bad rep”, but I am not looking to be dissuaded.

Premise
Basically, Ultramarines are supposedly bog standard marines, but they have taken on more and more “fluff”, including a Greco-Roman look –different from the Byzantine look of the Dark Angels–, this is bizarre feature is quite clear in the codices where a ultramarine-by-default miniature is next to a miniature made solely for the Ultramarine chapter, this happens for both the “blingful” HQs (cf. the 4 “chapter masters” & cpt. Sicarius) and the frugal troops (cf. Sgt. Tellion, UM veterans etc).
What interests me in particular is the fact that the fluff goes all the way to list the names – ...and valour– of the captains and their colours and markings, but they are not actually applied anywhere, this extends to the oddity that the UM 2nd company captain has two miniature: one a designated model (cpt Sicarious), but in the chapter master set there is another 2nd company captain (chap with shield).

Aim
I would like to make a diorama with the captains assembled, but I completely mystified to what to make them do. They would probably have innumerable senior staff meetings with nibbles –M Calgar is on the chubby side– and blue powerpoints slides, but I will avoid that.
My most decent idea is a ceremony or some sort or a briefing by a messenger, preferably a small chap, namely a psycher or a squat pleeing for help, but I am not convinced. Has anyone got any ideas?
Secondarily, I would speculate that, the 8th being an assault only, cpt. Numitor would have a jump pack, while, the 9th being devastator only, cpt. Sinon will have the signum (antenna-like thingy on the backpack).
On an aesthetic note, Papa Smurf (Marneus Calgar) and 1st cpt (Agemann) (old model in terminator armour cum toga) are in a dynamic pose while the other captains are static. Additionally 11+ men is a big big crowd...would it be an utter mess?

You know, I would almost pay for someone to do this. Almost. Would be SO hilarious.

Speaking of the Roman theme...some sort of Coliseum scene? As I remember it, the potential recruits of the UM have to endure all sorts of tests before they're accepted, among them a big fight among themselves. Papa Smurf and the other little smurfs as similar to Caesar? 'Hail Marneus! Morituri te Salutant!'

I think the most obvious solution is a War-room brief. Either huddled around a table with a paper mat, or standing over a high-tech digital display table.

War-room briefing with technical staff ala servitors and servo-skulls but also imperial commander lookalikes and maybe a psyker and/or a priest sounds really nice to me!

very high tech and pretty dark in tone like something out of the numerous illustrations of similar scenarios.

Might be a complete opposite of what has been suggested so far... but what about the captains wandering through, and surveying the devestation site where the first company had fallen to the Tyranids on Ultramar?

It's from the 3rd-4th ed Imperial Guard codex unless I missed my mark. Imperial commanders and commissars around a holographic world with servitors and psykers in attendance.

yeah that's the one. just swap the ig for sm characters. obviously convos would be needed. and change the hololithic projector. maybe just have them leaning over a screen. you could have some mental osl if you wanted, ie VERY dark with them illuminated by the screen. and i'm thinking of a tabletop screen like in 'the island'

RE holographic man
I like the idea of having a ghostly figure.
For train sets they sell pebbles, called E-Z water, that can be set by heating, oddly though they are have a yellow hue, so I could make a holographic man. I would need to get a plastic (=polystyrene) marine, make a negative (RT curing rubber), chemically melt the polystyrene (I work in a lab) or remove it and pour the E-Z water.

RE meeting
I said I would not, but I am starting get very tempted: floor w table, powerpoint wall, side wall with tyrannid heads and picture of Robby Gullman looking smug. Did I mention the water cooler and the sandwich trolley?

RE architecture
As DannyBoy2k pointed out, the architecture should be very classicist, which is a good idea. I think I would go for Georgian (no fresco or mosaics, just fluted columns, garlands and tondi with tyrannids sticking out.

Perhaps two or three arguing with the rest, it would give you the opportunity for a bit more dynamic and allow you to use the battle cry pose heads. You know, the ones where you can see every tooth? This is sticking with the war room meeting idea of course.

Don't bother coming up with your own solution for the clear figures. Just make the negative mould, and pour clear resin or perhaps that stuff everyone uses to make water scenes.

You could also get some epic 40k figurines and set up a holographic battle map with tanks and planes!

Yes! Yes yes yes yes! And someone power-noshing. A mountain of sandwiches/chips/whathaveyou. Someone who barely fits in his armor. Oh, and the shiny metal coffee urn.

Yep, sounds good. After all, roman/greco armor means roman/greco surroundings. The coliseum wuold be neat, but a bit much perhaps, I agree. But this sounds nice. Be very cool to see this.

Pros & Cons of Senior Staff Meeting idea
In the attachments, I did a test to see how well do 10 men only fit around a table, unfortunately it can only be done on a A4 sheet (here just card, in the final 5mm plasticard) but it does not look too crowded.
I drew ionic columns for simplicity, but I am aiming for corinthian/composites or a variant of these with imperial heraldry, not sure how to make the projector sheet holding caryatids. I am hoping not have to get anything rapid prototyped, though.
It may look funny but it is a bit off the original aim to depict the 10 captains (which are in effect centurions) and the chapter master (=Legate), so I could abandon the UM theme and get a less sophisticated chapter, like Space wolves – fur-clad men huddling coffee cups? –, white scars –more like a drive-in than ppt–...
Pros & Cons of Warzone or messanger idea
Last attachment. 11 men fit on a 21cm square (A4 width) in a wedge formation, which could be a warzone as Springbok proposed or indoors. Not sure how to make them look as if they are surveying damage (the governator finding a dumbell amidst wreckage springs to mind). So either a just simply posing for no reason (!?) or harkening a small chap as in the picture. It just lacks something though which I cannot frame...

i agree the meeting's good works for me

But UM? or a more barbaric chapter?
I quite like the idea of space wolves (log capin architecture) having a meeting (powerpoint background will have to be blue as that is the colour of every ppt..)

I'll leap in to say that any PowerPoint presentation type thing should surely be holographic rather than 2d by now? Epic Miniatures ahoy! :D B.

aye. i don't think you could pull of the holographic image properly, even with the clear minis. maybe paint them a ghostly green or something like that. like the ghosts in lotr
