tufts of grass

I know of one way to do it but if others know of other methods please share.

My problem is I dont know where to buy the materials for the method Ive read about.

The stuff Im thinking of are individual shards of metal. Then you run a magnet over them to raise them up. I suppose I can find science project type magnets and then paint them green. But thats an extra level of work and might not work as well as specifically designated grass making materials.

Just check it out in a store.. you can also check out the GW Static grass.. it\'s ok, a wee expensive maybe.

I just checked GW static grass and it showed me that static grass is infact just a greenish powder.

I need something thats going to give me small individual blades rather than a moss looking covering.

Seeing as I\'ve never used it, I don\'t know if static grass is this metal stuff your talking about.

If you do want to use static grass though, I think that at train model stores you can get a larger amount for less money than GW

Yup...bought a huuuuge thing of static grass from my local model train store for something like $8. They also have different colors of flock and what not. I\'ve also bought \"long\" grass where you glue a tuft onto the base and then trim it to length. It\'s what I used on the base for this along with static grass and ballast:

Granted, it\'s not the best example of use of flock and stuff and it is a 1/8 scale, but you can get the idea.

static grass is not what Im looking for. I would use static grass for moss covering a rock...or on lower quality bases where people cover the base in pva glue then dump it in the static grass.

Im looking for grass that I can clump together and will have individual blades.

Hmm, ok I think i\'m catching your drift :D

Something like this ? http://www.woodlandscenics.com/items.htm/FieldGrass

It\'s very easy to use.. bought some of this in a GW store once(they actually sold Woodland Scenics stuff)

hehe you guys are gonna start thinking Im just being difficult.

The stuff from woodland scenics might be what I end up using.

Lets see if I can explain better so when someone comes along that knows where to find this stuff everyone can benefit.

Ok imagine peices of metal shards no more than a quarter of an inch long.

its not flimsy like the woodland scenics grass. This stuff is very durable(being metal and all) so it wont get destroyed when used for gaming purposes.

You put a clump of this stuff and then use a magnet to get it to raise up. Then paint if necessary.

Very good grass result.

Never heard of that before. Do you have a link to a method or a pic of how its done. Most people just use static flock or bits of old paint brushes or even sting. Sound like a pain to do but Im always interested to learn new stuff.

WTF???

Just use fookin static grass!

It looks like grass! And it aint powder, it\'s very fine, short strands of artificial fibres. Far finer and more to scale than metal shavings I would have thought!

Just stick a thin wash of PVA over the top and it\'s almost bullet proof.

The metal stuff you\'re talking about is probably some sort of iron filings if memories from dodgy science classes serves me....

Use static grass... it makes the little individual clumps you want. No need for magnetic fields and tesla coils (unless you happen to be a badass scientist hell-bent on world domination muahahah!) :D

@Spacemonkey. Do you have a low tolerence for difficult questions or just havin a bad day. Cheer up tomorrows monday. I agree tho I think you\'ll get the results you want from static grass. But then again there alot to be said for world domination.

the woodland scenics is very fine sawdust coloured to whatever never used it myself gw flock bigger chunks you can paint, same with static grass, you could cut up a shaving brush for longer reed like chunks.......\"let go of your feelings Luke....use the force\" give it a try on some old bases you can always throw them away..... discovery is 100% exploration ( now thats a good line me thinks) :D

I think the problem here is a difference of terminology. In Games Workshop terms, \"static grass\" and \"flock\" are two different things. Flock is the sawdust-based moss-like stuff that slannpriest does not want. Static grass is the clumping, individual-blades-of-grass stuff that Spacemunkie and 237 or so others have suggested he use.

Looking at the Woodland Scenics site linked by Slann Priest, it looks like they call their version of GW\'s flock, \"turf.\" And they call their version of GW\'s static grass, \"static grass flock\" -- hence the confusion. And slannpriest when you said it looks like powder to you, I\'m 99% certain it\'s not. If you\'re ordering online and can\'t see the physical product before you buy, though, and don\'t want to take the 1% chance I\'m wrong, buy GW\'s Static Grass -- I guarantee you it\'s what you want. You also said you looked at GW\'s Static Grass and it showed you it was powder -- I don\'t know what you were looking at to make you think that, but it\'s wrong. In GW\'s terms, flock is powder and static grass is what you\'re describing you want. Trust me, I own both... as does, I\'m sure, everyone else who told you to get static grass.
