Truescale Space Wolves and Fluff Scale Dreadnought

Hello everyone!

I'm not the best with a camera but I wanted to put a thread out on my current project to get ideas and motivate myself to continue the army.

Ajax has been a big inspiration to keep me moving and like him I am using the tutorial from Master of the Forge. (Plus ideas from doghouse, synapse and others.)

The goal is to have a 2000 point Space Wolves army finished for the fall tournament games! We'll see how it goes!:tremble:

Here are some pics of the first few marines minus their backpacks. The widened backpacks are done I just haven't stuck them on. The death korps model in the last photo shows the scale.

And here are the dreadnought pieces. The first pic shows the main body compared to the regular dread and the second shows the engine I'm going to use.

After reading the fluff, I settled on making the dread ~80mm tall when completed or about 50% larger than the current pastic one.

From the SW Codex Dreads are described as being 5 meters tall. Roughly 2x the height of a marine. My marines are 40mm tall so this sets it at 80mm.

In the SM Codex they are described as 2 to 3x the height of a man. Since guardsmen are ~32mm tall this sets the range between 64 and 96mm.

I approve of these Wolves. :D

It is my pleasure to be an inspiration, I'm glad I could help! Of course your Wolves are probably going for a more playable atmosphere, mine are just for sheer awesome factor. Otherwise you wouldn't have bothered with a meltagun... unless it was being used as a club! Interesting choice trying to fit them on 25mm bases... I guess you have to if you want to use them for a tournament. I am not such a fan of the widened backpacks... they take a lot of extra pieces, and I don't think they are necessary...

Your pictures could probably be better if you had more clear lighting. Don't use the flash, don't zoom, just use your painting light and point it right at the facing of the model you're trying to photograph. Or, the pictures I took for the gallery posts were taken in a mini-studio like this one:

Actually... I think it might be that exact one... anyway it's about $50 and it lets you take amazing pictures with nearly no experience.

Your dreadnought looks huge, I can't wait to see him completed! I think he might end up being too big for the base... maybe you can have him stepping down off the base!

I am going to subscribe to this thread and watch it carefully. Good luck finishing by September!

Thanks Ajax! I'm lovin' your lord model and thinking that I need to start on my HQs. I am going for playability with these fellas since I want to use them in the local tourneys.

The 25mm bases have been a challenge as only 1 out 5 leg sets in the termie box fit the base! (4 out of 5 legs in the Space Wolf termie box fit!) I used plasticard chunks covered in a little green stuff to get around it. I'm thinking of painting these up as chunks of ice, or rocky terrain.

I actually wish I could come up with a 2000 point list so that I know exactly what I need to build. Ah well, such is life!

I have mixed feelings about the backpacks. Sometimes I like them and other times I don't! It sure would save a LOT of material and time to not do them. I just finished filling in the back of the shins on 20 sets of legs. It's been a long night! :sleepy:

The photo setup looks pretty sweet. I could definitely use the help!

*mumbles* You two are making me want to start a new project! Truescale marines look more and more awesome each time I look at them.

Eeeexcellent. Feel your desire for cool Space Wolves overwhelm your better sense Chrome! Wait... finish up your Thunderwolf WIP first! I want to see that thing ready to eat some poor fools.

Thanks Wargamer! I suggest you give the over-the-head-axe-swing thing a try. It's awesome, challenging, and could turn out much better than mine. Kudos for trying with the bases regardless. I'm sure that it'll look good whatever you choose to do with them, just make that decision before you sand flock and prime them. Also, why are you filing down the backs of the legs? I just left all that stuff in tact, you have to fill in that space anyway, may as well have a framework.

I've attached my 2000 point list. I find that this sort of setup works well for me. (Ignore the cost and tax rate- I do that to plan out projects so I know how much money I need for completion)
I use the Razorbacks (The Lascannon carrying the Grey Hunters with the Plasma gun and Wolf Guard with the Storm Bolter, the Heavybolter Razorback carrying the Meltagun, and Power Axe Grey Hunters and the Wolf Guard with the Thunder Hammer) to support one another, the Predator to support the Blood Claws (Who have Njal and the Wolf Guard with the plasma pistol with them), the Long Fangs to pick at targets of opportunity. The Skyclaws (with the Wolf Guard with the Jump Pack and Frost Blade) and Venerable Dread pal around together beating on whatever they find and when the Terminators (With Grminar) Deep Strike in... it's all over. They shoot everything and then assault everything and then you win. (by the way if you can find some points somewhere to spend on twin-linked assault cannons instead of twin-linked heavy bolters on the Razorback this list would be better :D)

I have other lists but that one is my favorite so far. Good luck continuing the project! I look forward to seeing more sons of Fenris

Oops. I meant filling in the backs rather than filing them down. That's what I get for posting late at night! Although I so usually have to file or sand the odd leg a little after they harden. I must not get enough green stuff in the area!

Thanks for the list! It has plenty of punch without needing a ton of models... I like the razorbacks because it's easier to model them up to look like they could hold 6 burly space wolves. I think boosting the back a little to raise the roof would do it. Similar to the way the forgeworld SOB Repressor looks.

I also drew up a paper schematic for Termie armor last week. I'm thinking ~46mm tall would be enough. (My standard marines are coming in at 40mm.) I'm also thinking that bulking up the legs and arms without widening the model too much would be the way to go too. Of course I need to focus on finishing the next 20 basic space wolves and the dread first! Oh no my ADHD is showing! :tremble:

Tell me about it! As if i don't have enough to do, I'm only saved by the fact I don't have the money to buy the parts to make 'em! :smile-big:

ADD may be helpful in this particular project. I have a tendency to focus on one model, finish him, and then move on. If I let my ADD run wild I would have all kinds of arms, legs, bodies and stuff done and just waiting for assembly. It's important to let stuff dry between doing stuff. I've left fingerprints on just about everything...

wtb perfectly smooth fingers. *or putty that sets instantly when you want it to... so handy*

True scale does have it's lure! I've got plans for one true scale sm, and one only. Pre-heresy death guard, just for the fancy. Far off in the future though:p It seems as if the dread is going to be massive!

is it just me, or has anyone else thought about this in Inquisitor scale
I've not actually done any comparisons to see how much bigger the SM is than the normal IG humans tho

The marine in Inquisitor is roughly one chest larger than a standard human model and the proportions are a lot better than in 40k already. :D

Finally! After way too much real work I've had a chance to make some progress on the fluff scale dread. Here are a few shots of the Engine. I extended the sides with plasticard and filed the groves to match. I also added a piece to attach it to the back of the dread as things move along! :)

Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated!

And here is the progress on the main body. Increasing the specs by 50% sure is making for a rather large dread! :)

I still need to add the rivets but I'm not sure about any other detailing at this point. Any thoughts or crtiques are welcome! It's a bit smoother than some of the pics suggest. I have had to use Green stuff to clean up some joints/corners on the plasticard.

A side view

and the Size comparison. (The engine is set in place for this shot.)

Thanks for the compliment Chrome! I hope that my greenstuff/modeling skills are as good as yours someday! I'm counting on the old 'practice makes perfect' to be true. :)

I'm planning to make a set of templates for the beast. This is the first time that I've tried to work much with plasticard and it has been quite the fun challenge. I'm still not sure of the best way to model the rivets on him. Such is life!
