True Blood

True Blood started over here recently and I was shocked to see it\'s the #1 rated show on TV.com the last couple of weeks.

Now the fact that Entourage is at #3 and Smallville is in the top ten do help put this into perspective but still... if anyone here watches it, does it get better in season two or what?

SPOILERS!!!!!

its season 2 and the only problem i have is sookie\'s friend tara. i hate that chick. i just wish someone would eat her soul. then i would be fine.

bill\'s progeny is pretty cool though.

i have to admit i hated the conclave meeting though at the end of season 1. Reminded me too much of vampire the masqureade and in a bad way.

It looks pretty lame. By what the adverts tell me the main actor is shockingly bad. I blame Twighlight for giving us this surge of lame vampires! I remember the time when vampires were evil....like in Underworld and Dracula :(

Honestly, if you think the show is bad, avoid the books - those are so much worse from what I have been told. (By my wife who actually read em) I like the show though, but when we first started watching the show it was like this is SO bad i shouldn\'t watch this, yet we kept on watching to see how much worse it could get; now we\'re hooked.

Vampires are the most abused mythical creature ever! Has it gone so far that Underworld has become a good old fashioned how-it-should-be example?!?

I couldn\'t agree more.

I downloaded the first two seasons not too long ago to have something to watch. I got about 10 minutes into the first episode and couldn\'t take anymore of it. It\'s painfully bad.

Thanks for the headsup! I was thinking of buying one for a bit of a comparison.

Sadly, I know how you feel - despite my complaint I haven\'t cancelled the recording of the next episode!

Hehe.

Honestly though, what \'should\' vampires be like? It\'s so varied now as they have been portrayed in a really wide variety of guises - compare The Hunger with Fevre Dream, Salem\'s Lot, Vampire$, Interview With The Vampire. And then of course compare all of them to Stoker\'s book.

These days the common idea is so conditioned by movies - which tend to a fairly uniform idea of what vamps are like - that younger fans are often shocked to discover than the seminal vampire, Dracula, could walk about in daylight and could turn himself into a mist (!) as well as a range of animals.

So:
native soil, y/n?
Affected by daylight, y/n?
Inherently evil, y/n?
Medical condition or demonic/Satanic effect?
Affected by silver, y/n?
Put off by garlic, y/n?
Crosses work/don\'t work?
Fangs, y/n?
If fangs, are they the canines or the second incisors (which I happen to think looks stupid)?

The list could go on. And you can really go into detail on some of these. Like is it necessary for the wielder to have faith for a cross/crucifix to work? If crosses work it is because the vamp was a Christian in life, or is it that the Christian God in the God and his symbols repel evil? And if that\'s so then why isn\'t the Middle East overrun with vamps, given the Jews and Moslems are SOOL!

I\'ll watch the third episode now... wasn\'t overly thrilled with the first two but people have said that I should continue watching! :) Some actually claim it\'s the best series on TV! :p

I Am Legend (the brilliant book, not the lying trashy film) covered some of this.

Of the books you list, I\'ve read Salem\'s Lot (don\'t remember much), Fevre Dream (really enjoyed it) and Interview With A Vampire (cool; haven\'t seen the film tho, and have no particular desire to read any of the rest of the series). Really though, I much prefer werewolves. :D

Obviously, one shouldn\'t over-analyse the vampire myth! lol

What I think, though, is that vampires should have more in common with the original vampire myth than just the blood sucking... If not, why call it vampire? Other than to cash in on the huge interest of vampires.

I can understand and be interested in a lot of modern scenarios where the ancient vampire has to adjust and fit into a modern society, but I have a really hard time stomaching the idea that all of a sudden the old, bitter, individualistic and seemingly superior creatures would move into the gutters, form street gangs and dress and behave like som rag-tag low-life scum fighting with samurai swords and whatnot... For instance...

Films like Blade :)|~), Underworld etc. and shite TV series like Vampire the Masquerade and, supposedly (as I haven\'t seen more than a few minutes), True Blood, and heaps of crappy litterature have sort of ruined the vampire idea for me. Oh, and don\'t get me started on vampire miniatures wearing plate armour and wielding huge swords... :innocent:
