Thebladesmiths 1/4 2013 WIP

Thank you for all your input on my new WIP for the first quarter of 2013. This is my first attempt at a WIP log and I'm hoping that it will help keep me on track with my painting. I am a fanatical war gamer who enjoys painting. Almost all of my work gets handled, damaged, repaired and remade on a regular basis so I try to take a very pragmatic approach to my assembly, construction, and basing of the models I work on. I'm always trying to get better and balance speed with quality. Thank you in advance for all your input and advice!

So this is a Rhino/ razorback that has been a mainstay in my 40k army for a while. I always wanted to do something nicer with it but it got sent into action before I could. The standard speed paint for my army is: 1. flat black base coat 2. dry brush dark silver 3.wash black 4. dry brush more dark silver and add highlights. But now that I have some time I want to add some detail and do a bit of free hand work.

Good start! I love seeing guys that actively play get into painting. Most of us painters just finish a piece and throw it in a display case, and most of these minis are meant to be played with!

All the hoses are painted, and now I'm starting on the background. I think the skull is pretty much done, overall I'm pretty happy with it. The main thing I had trouble with (other than the chunky base coat) was the black I used to clean up around the skull started coming out chaucky. I did a bit more than just a black line and tryed to use really thin black in order to keep it smooth but I dont know what i did wrong that made it go chaucky. The paint I have had the worst trouble with hand down is black, it seems like it is the hardest to get right. O well, good thing the background will cover it.

In the past I have mainly used a flat black and bolt gunmetal for my base coat. I’m going to try to get the same point across withoutusing metallics. So here are my goals for this next phase:

1.NMM on metal parts. I’m thinking I will use codex grey and the like and if Idon’t pull of NMM its ok, it will just be grey. The main thing is to get awayfrom shiny.

2. Im not sure if I will try to shade the black yet or not.

3. In order to richen up the mini I would like to add in the Ghost binary onmost of the mini in the black. To keep this from getting out of hand I’m goingto try making a pair of stamps. It seems kind of silly to make a stamp for a 1and a 0 but I want to keep this clean and I know I will get sloppy if I handpaint all of that.

4. Free hand the skull on the back hatch.

And that is it.
I will of course mix in several; other projects to keepfrom getting to burned out.

Great job on the freehand on the tank hatch. Very well done. Do you ever go by Plan 9? We have been meeting up on Wednesdays to play Warmahordes and paint. You should stop by if you are still in the area.

Thanks Chad! I'm glad to see you trolling CMON again. I still go by Plan 9 every once in a while. I don't get much into Warmachine but I should come by one Wednesday and paint some.

I wasn't trying to talk you into a new game. I just meant I would be working on PP minis, you are free to paint whatever. I just know it is helpful to have people to get instant feedback from. You and Charlie should be painting together, to help push one another.

Yep, nothing better than hanging out and painting. I’vegotten in a few games with Charlie but haven't had the chance for a painting session. I will try to make next Wednesday to paint. In the mean time........
