The world is way too PC...

Hi everyone!
I understand that the world is \'always on its toes from the threat of terrorism\' and all that, but it\'s getting a bit much for me.

About a month ago, i started bringing my miniatures to school so i could work on them in art (this was for my major work, mind you) and the only thing i could transport them in safely was my GW case.

Now, i am a kind of person that seems to be on the receiving end of a whole lot of hatred, and people just love justifying it. i cop shit all the time. so when i brought that thing to school, and people got up me for it, it kinda pissed me off.

and then my roll call teacher asked me what it was. i think this was the straw that broke the donkey\'s back, and i told her that i had a bomb in the case.

she said \"Really?\"
i replied \"No, just joking. It\'s my art stuff.\"

yet some people didn\'t hear that part, or decided not to, and decided to cause me some trouble for it.
i think i\'m bloody lucky that i had a friend in that group and she told them to grow up, but she warned me about it.

and that was the end of that.

but i think that people really need to grow up. people need to stop playing into the culture of fear and all that sh!t.
i mean, we live in AUSTRALIA. the arse end of the planet. nothing goes on here.

So does anyone else reckon that the world is getting way too wound up over this?

EDIT: and in foresight i also apologise to anyone who has suffered due to terrorism. this is just an opinion relative to my life.

agree

I agree with you, the world needs to stop taking itself so seriously.

Its the same in the US, you always here about some 7 year old running afoul of some zero tolerance policy and getting carted off in handcuffs because he brought a GI Joe to school with his little toy gun.

Now having said that, you have to be aware that people are sensitive, and joking about bombs is a good way to get people freaked out, even through they shouldn\'t.

Personally I think in today\'s world climate, making a joke about bringing a bomb into a school has little to do with Pollitical correctness and a lot more to do with general human decency.

It\'s just not a laughing matter, whether it\'s personally affected you or not. Your Edit alone shows that \'you should have known better\'.

Sorry to come off all patronising, but half the problems with the world today are caused by people who don\'t care about what others think or feel and I hate to see that propigated.

Here in the States a kid was suspended from school for bringing a rifle to school.......................a tiny, plastic one that GI Joe carries. No joke.......

Here where I live in Calif. they have banned ALL fireworks for Independence Day.

Big Mother\'s going to smother us. The world will be PERFECTLY safe and we all will die of boredom.

The world will never be \"perfectly safe\"

What PC is actually doing is oppressing the innocent.
Anyone who wants to go postal in a school or blow up a building will do just that regardless of \"PC\".
All \"PC\" does is infringe on our basic human right of expression and speech, meanwhile Al Qaeda and other factions openly broadcast all the things the polititians where you live are trying to stamp out.
All this crap about \"PC\" is pie in the sky, the people in power need to wake up, instead of punishing US for not following their etiquette. Big Brother is turning into a bully at an astonishing rate.

Till now it\'s OK here in germany. Yes the media exaggerates everything, especially terrorism and kids running amuk, but my personal environment luckily is still realistic. It\'s more likely you or your family dies in a car accident than from a terrist attack or a kid with a gun... But I think the majority is realy impressible by all thos media hypes.

I heard of a guy here in germany who was a bit drunk at a local fair and thought he could make a \"little\" joke. He jumped on a tabel, swung his rucksack over his head and screamed \"Alah uagba!!!\" (or something like that ;) ).
You can imagine how this ended... well luckily the guy is still alive. lol

on the subject of pc there is a person in the uk that got that a a letter from the council warning they may be evicted if the noise from wild birds in there garden each morning continues

hmm isint that what birds do each morning i would think it would make more noise to shut them up

PC is crap, jokes about bombs not so funny. I know you didnt mean any harm and your prob right about Aus not being at risk, but there is the little matter of Indonisia being to the North of you etc etc. I\'m not having a go I\'m just saying bombs and the word joke dont go together. On the PC front the world is going mad very mad.

I am of the opinion that you CAN joke about anything (and I mean ANYTHING), but you have to chose the time and the place to do so with a bit care.

i agree with ritual, time and a place for everything, ... i hate pc , ppl telling you you must say stuff without offending anyone or being specific in any way,i\'ll generalise if i want to dammit! or is that social correctness??? but i hate pc too

Ogre, if the world was \"way too PC\" you would be in jail, or in the special school with the gang bangers and anger-management problem kids now. As it is you\'re lucky you didn\'t cross some kind of idiotic zero-tolerance rule that forced them to expel you.

Yeah because saying you have a bomb in a box with a massive quasi-nazi logo on the side isnt grounds for concern at all. Thats not political correctness, its not wanting your students to be ripped to pieces by a nail bomb.

Your lucky you werent shot.

That\'s just Bull, seriously. A kindergarten kid with a plastic knife.
I think this proves my point. What I wan\'t to know is, what are they doing about the REAL threat?!
All this is just so they can be seen to be doing something, the reality is, they have no idea.

Despite the others opinion, I know what you are saying. If you had told me that you had a bomb, I would have laughed it off and went to (continued) class.

It seems people are so busy hoping for some overly sensationalized event, that they are willing to make one if one isn’t available. Which sounds better?

”A kid in roll called joked about having a bomb.”

Or

“Did you hear about the bomb threat at our school? A kid in class had a bomb today. I was so scared. Btu fortunately he was taken away by the authorities.”

Turns to the next peron9s0 willing to listen…

“A kid brought a bomb to our school today…”

I got something similar when I worked in the US. I had a black trench coat and when I wore it to work one day. My co-workers started calling me Columbine.

Let’s not mention Lizcam’s little problem at work. Its just silly really.

If he was in the US, he would have been. Making any kind of bomb threat is against the law. they have sent 15 year olds to jail for 90 day because of making prank calls. So I think it world is that bad.

I think that has more to do with how dry your state is and the propensity for uncontrollable wild fires....But I still see your point!

Personally I think your comment, despite being throwaway and sarcastic, was somewhat \"tactless\" given the paranoia in the Western World today.
It\'s not even two months since there were terrorist attacks within the UK and an arrest in Australia in connection to those attacks.

It doesn\'t take much to start a Panic, and considering you have described yourself as \"A Nerdy Kid who gets picked on a lot\" it wouldn\'t take much imagination for someone to incorrectly cast you in the role of \"Potential Nutcase With a Bomb, looking to take revenge on his tormentors\", however unlikley you may think that to be.

I\'m still trying to get my head round the bit where he said he was painting miniatures in art in school. Is it curricular? Is it even art?

the comment was stupid considering the paranoia around but the world has gone mad. the uk has had troubles before due to northern ireland but there seems to be an hysteria now due to the fact that it is a different culture doing it. the media fuels it much more which suits the goverment as it allows them to push through legislation that in a normal climate wouldnt get through. sadly (although some would say happily) the world is different now. you have to be careful what you say as you can so easily be labelled a racist, terrorist, peadophile etc for what you think is an off hand comment
