The Qualities Of GW Metallics

I\'ll try this again. I have a pot of GW mithril that Ive had for over 5 years and its still good. I put water with a drop of detergent in it and a ballbearing to help mix the paints. I also store my paints in a cool location. I think Ebbon must have had a very bad experience with GW metallics. I think this is one of the things they got right.

I have tried several metallics, because I was never really satisfied with the size of the flakes....
I don\'t like the Vallejo game colour metallics, the binder, flakes and the pigment seperate too fast for me. I put them on my pallette, thin it down, apply one thin coat, stir like crazy, apply another one.... too much hassle. Haven\'t tried Model colour metallics, my LGS only carries game colour.
Vallejo metallics on an alcoholic base are great. They give a very smooth coat without any thinning and the flakes are not only very finely ground but the paint also looks gorgeous when it reflects light. Just like real metal. Problem here is that they dry far too fast and require shaking like stupid before they can be used. Often I put some on my pallette, get it one the brush, at once apply about half of it because the other half is already dry, repeat it two times and then clean my brush because the bristles are effectively glued together with dry paint. Apart from that they are great, but that\'s a pretty big \"that\". Also, they can not be cleaned up with water - I use aceton with good results.
GW metallics are better I think, I have a pot of chainmail that really works well: It can be thinned down very well while still covering. The problem here is the pot (screw-top, no eyedropper. Yuck.) which really let\'s the paint dry up quickly, no matter how much I take care of it. I always add a drop of water after I opened the pot. Still, I have the feeling the flakes are too big and don\'t go on smoothly.
Last on my list is model master metalizer paint. It\'s supposed to be applied with an airbrush, but works well with a brush too. It is incredibly thin and still covers well in two or three coats maximum. You have to shake it like crazy again, the binding agent and the metal flakes seperate in less than ten minutes :D I am not sure what the base is - can clean the brushes with water if I am quick enough after applying it, but when it starts to dry (without being completely dry yet), I need aceton. The paint has a great shine and the flakes seem to be very small. The pot says you are supposed to buff the metalizer - I usually don\'t do this, but it actually works.

That\'s all I have used so far. I would say like the metalizer paint best - just follow the order in which I listed the paint, basically that\'s my opinion of worst to best ;)

Yes, fanboy. Vallejo\'s are a better quality. I bought GW and they dried out in a couple of months. Haven\'t you been paying attention to my comments about them drying out?

Vallejos are better for the price. You get more for a little less. Remember you are paying for the GW name instead of quality. Someone said there is no difference in quality. Great! Lets say they are the same quality. You still get more Vallejo paint for alomost half price. You also get the useful dropper bottle, and they don\'t dry out as fast.So Vallejos are a better purchase.GW paints are very expensive and have less paint per bottle volume.Which is the point of my post.

Now go walk that off and rejoin the forums.

Another good set of metallic paints is Ral Partha\'s IWM. They are really good and affordable. IWM

i dont really think so...

u had a trauma with a GW bottle? lollollollollollol

i don\'t know why ur GW colors dried out so fast. i have a can of mithril silver that has maybe 3-4 years or more.... maybe u don\'t preserve them properly.

The only time I have had trouble with GW paints drying out is with the old screw caps, now they\'ve changed back to flip-tops they seem fine to me

I would say that GW metallics give a better finish than the Vallejo ones -maybe this is due to something like the size of the \'flakes\' etc, but I don\'t really know, the finish from the GW ones always seems to be smoother

I have been doing this since 1993. If I can\'t can\'t handle paints I need to stop now.

Other people have had problem with the old and new bottles. Does that make them Noobs too?
I have had problems with GW stuff even when I was a fanboy too. Its one of the reasons I tried Vallejo. In my time in this hobby I have tried several different paints.
I have found Vallejo to be better. I was suggesting that Vallejo is a better product. That is what this is about, right?

You kept a bottle of paint for five years? How often do you paint? ??? I have heard of paints going after a few year. In other words, they dry out or just become thick and chucky.

Why do I feel like I just stumbled on to GW\'s chat with all of the rabid fanboys?
