Ive only ever used GW metallics. You can do the usual dry brush over black undercoat OR thin them and paint like any thing else with washes and darker shades. There are a few tutes in the articles section on painting metallics. Good luck.

I use GW metallics as well as Vallejo, and I really like my GW ones. The Vallejo metallics taste horrible (the deciding factor in a mini painter\'s choice of paints lol)!

To use them well, I guess just water them down enough so that you don\'t get thick coats, just like other paints. They are highly pigmented so that is something I like about them. After that, you can do ink washes and do highlights or whatever you want to.

Best Metallics

Greetings,

I have got both GW and Vallejo metallics. I must say that I really don\'t like the Vallejo ones at all. Out of the two the GW ones are the best. The other option would be Andrea metallics. I know one of the Andrea painters, they use both GW and Andrea metallics and swear by them.

I use GW metallics. Partly because of availability but I do also like the effect they give.
They also work well mixed with a bit of ink. I painted a Dark Elf army in purple metallics highlighted up to Mithril Silver.
A High Elf army would look good in a nice metallic blue methinks.
Just a thought...

GW paints dry out really quick. Better to go with Vallejo.

GW

i find the whole range of GW colors is really good... especially the metallics, if u thin them properly they don\'t dry too much in little time...

Don\'t the new GW paints have a better cap system that is easy to open and has a tight seal?

Vallejos don\'t dry out as fast and you get more than GW.The eye dropper bottles are better too. Also remember, when you buy GW products, you are paying for the name. no so much quality.

Another good set of metallic paints is Ral Partha\'s IWM. They are really good and affordable. IWM

Vallejo bottles definitely better, so if you are picky about that go for Vallejo. The new GW paint cans are better than they used to be though. Cyril said GW are better so this topic should be officially closed. lol

Brushlicker and Freak!
I use both, can\'t tell any significant difference, although the vallejo seem to need more thinning.

I also have the alcohol based vallejo\'s and hate them. I think its because it tends to be hot over here and they dry out VERY fast, also you can\'t move them about much once on the mini. About the only thing I\'ve used them for is a top highlight, coz they cover well.

Yes, fanboy. Vallejo\'s are a better quality. I bought GW and they dried out in a couple of months. Haven\'t you been paying attention to my comments about them drying out?

Vallejos are better for the price. You get more for a little less. Remember you are paying for the GW name instead of quality. Someone said there is no difference in quality. Great! Lets say they are the same quality. You still get more Vallejo paint for alomost half price. You also get the useful dropper bottle, and they don\'t dry out as fast.So Vallejos are a better purchase.GW paints are very expensive and have less paint per bottle volume.Which is the point of my post.

Now go walk that off and rejoin the forums.

yep yep GW metals are the best I\'ve tried. Got hopes for the reaper master series though.

okey. about this drying out thing..

1. store them upsidedown
2. put water in the pot. you could also put a tiny layer of water that seals of the paint from the air.
3. put drying retarder in the pot

I\'m after the best quality of paint and therefor I use a mix of Vallejo and GW ones. I mainly use Vallejo though if there isn\'t a huge difference for the mentioned reasons. It is a much better buy.
