According to many post-modernist cultural anthropologists facts are evil and do not exist.

Accepting this as an axiom, The Earth could be flat (or even bi-pyramidal if you want ).

I used to know a college professors who was a member of the Flat Earth Society. Back then (about 15 years ago :D) the only membership requirement was the promise not to mock the society and its members in public; in exchange they sent you a very nice-looking plaque with the map of the Earth, stating that you are a member. It looked REALLY cool on his office desk :)

Makes even less sense then the Flying Spaghetti monster, though somewhat reminiscent. The SWAG for FSM is much cooler though :D

I so want one of these for my car:

This thread reminds of the guys who measured the earth\'s timeline to strictly biblical standards which puts us at approximately 6000 years of existance. Of course, dinosaurs were mentioned in Job... right (Behemoths with cedar tails...)?
It\'s such an interesting argument.

I don\'t really know when facts went out of vogue, but it had certainly happened long before I got into college. The flat-earthers got nothing on some of my old profs.

This is a tangent but I remember when the Catholic church finally accepted that the earth was not the center of the universe. That was 1992 I think.

I think that people just do these sort of things just to get attention. Anyone willing to believe that the earth is flat will obviously grab attention. Although I guess if people can honestly believe W. Bush to be a good president then people can believe the earth is flat. To me they are one in the same.

All of my illusions have been shattered. The earth could be any shape at all, if we just choose to believe it? I choose trapovaloid, then.
We aren\'t the center of the universe? Even the catholics have accepted this? Who is, then? I\'m so confused!

Next thing, you\'ll all be telling me that the duck-billed platypus is actually a mammal that lays eggs!

i would like to know what countries lie on the edge? what stops the water falling off?
In the article they say :

\"And what about the fact that no one has ever fallen off the edge of our supposedly disc-shaped world?

Mr McIntyre laughs. \"This is perhaps one of the most commonly asked questions,\" he says. \"A cursory examination of a flat earth map fairly well explains the reason - the North Pole is central, and Antarctica comprises the entire circumference of the Earth. Circumnavigation is a case of travelling in a very broad circle across the surface of the Earth.\" \"

The so called flat earth map :

... no comment :p.

[edit]I\'d like to know how they explain seasons and temperature changes when you travel to the equator or the poles ;).[/edit]

The church is not the only one to hold onto some very strange \'facts\'.

They gave kids (elementary school age) cigarettes to help with their emphysema back in the 50\'s. (Yea, that worked.)

My physics professor said that his physics professor swore that the atom was the smallest particle and could not be split. (yea, I know I\'m old - so was he when I was young).

Pluto is the last planet in the solar system. Now the question is \"Is Pluto really a planet?\"

GW spray paint is primer. One of the biggest falacies of our time. Along with GW knows how to make a matt sealer.

Flat earthers - you know only a few years ago, the Catholic Church finally agree that Gallaleo might be right; the Earth may not be the center of the universe.

Young earthers - I find it rather presumptuous of us to measure God\'s days by the rotation of our little spec out in the vastness of the universe.

everyone knows the world is flat and carried on the back of 4 giant elephants who stand on the back of a giant space turtle.....oh wait thats the Diskworld

It is carried on the back of a turtle, and that turtle stands on another larger turtle, and that one stands on an even larger turtle, and so on. It\'s turtles all the way.

I remember in my World Religions course that one of the religions belived that the world was like a cheese platter. The earth or land was a plate, and the sky was a dome over it. The dome had a bunch of holes in it which formed the stars. I think under the plate was some form of underworld. Can\'t remember the specifics or which religion it was (think it may have been an ancient one, maybe Roman), but it would fit will with the Flat Earth Disc model shown here. Which is atcually kind of odd, since most Flat Earthers take their proof from the Bible.

Amos 9:6
It is He that buildeth His spheres in the heaven, and hath founded His troop on the earth. He that calleth for the waters of the sea and poureth them out upon the face of the earth--the LORD is His name.

From what I\'ve read of Flat Earth Theory, there is allegedly a giant wall of ice around the edges of the earth which keeps the water from falling off.

What translation is that? It doesn\'t seem to match anything else out there.

Biblical description of the structure of the earth was drawn from Babylon and pretty clearly describes the earth as being a flat circle (or at other times having corners) and being held up by pillars.
