Terror bird project thread-update finished

hi guys
ive decided to post some wips of a mini im working on. This started when i left some procreate putty too long and it cured in the shape of an upper beak. originally it was going to be a gryphon but i decided what the hell...why not make a terror bird. Ive never seen a mini of them....though i dont suppose a lot of people know of them since they became extinct just before humans appeared on the scene. The biggest species was 10ft tall, weighed over 1000lb and ate meat....a pretty amazing creature really.
This is loosely based on the skeleton of one.

This mini is hopefully going to be cast and available through necromancer graphix in the coming months.

anyway heres a couple of wip photos so far, still a fair amount of work to be done.
He stands at 85mm high and can stand unsupported with reasonably good balance.

Very realistic head (For a fantasy animal! lol)

Is it gonna have tiny undeveloped wings or little claws like a T rex?

... Bats? :D
Hehe - I think I know what you mean about the thumb - I can\'t see that climbing trees though, so I guess it would be vestigial :p

The legs and it\'s general posture also look very birdlike and natural.

Big head, little arms!!!

Stunning scuplt for the head and such so far. Great job on the structure of the body. It\'ll be very nice when it\'s done.

Get ready to fire up the BBQ, we\'re having wings tonight!

Most excellent timing. :D
A friend of mine is after a scary Liver Bird. (Hey I work in Merseyside, I\'ve seen really scary \"Liver Birds\" <Shudders>)
So this will be superb for him.

This is looking good. I watched one of those documentaries (may have been walking with beasts or the one with Nigel Marvin) that had Terror Birds on. Scary things, those.

a bit of an update, got some more work done today. im thinking of adding some plume feathers like those on a secretary bird but im still not entirely sure how to achieve those...i was thinking of making each one on a thin piece of wire then drilling holes into the back of the head with a pinning vice

lol not as long as you might think but they are time consuming...that patch of feathers over the back took about an hour or two. they are pressed down into the basic shape with a sculpting tool and then the filaments are put in with the edge of a razor blade

One note of caution. I\'ve tried using a pin vice to drill a hole in green stuff and it just ripped the gs. However, puncturing a hole in it works fine.

yes i have noticed that with greenstuff too. however procreate has different properties and it handled the drill fine when i used it to drill a hole in the back of the head for the wire armature. unlike greenstuff you can file and cut procreate without many problems, its far nicer to work with and doesnt shrink back either as it cures

might be worth checking with the guys who are gonna cast it up.. Plume feathers may spoil the casting process.. That can always be saved for people to add their own if they wish.. I\'d say it would be a shame to spoil that head profile...

just my two cents..

keep it coming looking great.
