Schnooble's Board Game Painting Projects

Still haven't chosen my next mini to paint, but I do have a project that suddenly came up.

We played some Arcadia Quest last night and I ended up defeating one of the fallen angels (Justicar) and am now able to use him as one of my 3 characters. So of course I had to paint him! Decided I wanted him to have that standard fallen angel look still so lots of black and red. Here he is with his base coat and wings blended.

Not going to go to wild on him but perhaps this is a good opportunity to learn how to properly highlight black...

The yellow highlights are good. Gives a bit of a fiery pseudo-OSL look.

I love seeing these funky little figures painted up, they've got a tonne of character.

Thanks Foxtail. Just working on the base tonight a bit while the gf paints her nails. Hopefully get more I'll get to finish it off tomorrow night.

Finished up the Justicar by basing him. Didn't get much of a chance to do anything else with him, as I had to have him ready for last Friday's game. So we finished up the final mission in Arcadia Quest:Inferno and thus the Campaign is now officially done and with that I'll probably move onto painting the Massive Darkness minis until the next game arrives which is either KD:M or Zombicide:GH.

I haven't decided which one I will be doing next but it's one of these two. I'm leaning towards Sarah (The knight with the helm as I really like her pose.)

Yep the Justicar is a really efficiently painted little mini....simple but super effective. Would look great on the gameboard I imagine.

Keen to see what you do with the MD minis as well

Thanks for the kind comments CoyoteBreaks and Hairster.

Yeah, I was actually pretty happy with the Justicar. One thing that I wished turned out better was my transition of the red to black on his shoulder pads. I didn't feather it out enough. Still looked great on the board though.

I've started working on Sarah, but really only have the base coat done so far, so I'm not going to bother posting a picture until I get to the more technical stuff. I have some days off of work this week so I should actually get her done by weekend.

Hmm, my original post seems to have gone poof. Anyways, didn't get to do as much to Sarah as i had hoped this weekend. Even this two days off!

I'm not happy with my armor. It's too white, so I'm thinking I might maybe try washing with a washed down Agrax in the shaded regions. Not sure if that's going to work out or just look weird. We shall see.

Also my images always look like my paints are really thick. I swear I water them down to almost glazes, but something about the way I photograph them makes them look like I'm just caking the mini with paint.

And i'm still having issues with some of my images always appearing on their side irregardles of the way they are orientated on my computer.

All in all a frustrating day and a frustating post. :)

I applied a thinned down Agrax EarthShade wash onto her and tried to highlight with some white to give the armor some contrast. Not to sure if it really worked or not. Looks ok as a game model, but I'm not really happy with how she turned out. Lesson learned : I need to watch some videos on how to properly do white...

For the third model of this game, I'm going to do another Adventurer. Malleus. Going to try thinning the paint down even further and see if I can get a smoother paint surface on him.

Been working on Malleus for a while now. Here's where I've gotten to.

I just recently just added the lighting effect, as I thought without it, it looked rather bland. His armor just didn't look interesting and the entire miniature just seemed to not stand out. Hoped that adding the might effect would make it a bit more dynamic. Still need to work some of the details especially his face and mace.

I’ve become a broken record this morning, since I’ve said this to everyone. The armour could use some brighter edge highlights to help it pop I think.

The painting on this one looks great though. And don’t be so hard on yourself about Sarah, she looks pretty darn god from where I’m standing.

Why didn't I think about the edge highlights? I think it's because I'm already using straight silver and using that as highlights won't show. Never thought of trying to lighten it up. So I'll try to mix up a lighter tone (I guess I'll try adding a bit of white/yellow although not sure if that works with metallic paint) and see what comes out. Thanks for the suggestion!

the finish sarah looks turned out good if you ask me, nice sceam and the white worked well with the other colours. liking the current one so far as well the lighting was a good idea.

Thanks Coyote.

Been super busy and haven't had much of a chance to really work on my mini. It's going to have to wait until the weekend when I have some extra time to provide an update.

Hmm, I think I made things a bit worse. :) Tried to lighten up the silver I was using that that didn't really work. Just make it look kinda white. Then I tried to fix it by putting more of the yellow glaze on it and well, yeah... But certainly good enough to table top which is all I really need.

With this mini I learned that trying to lighting up a metallic silver by adding white doesn't really work. And still need to figure out a better way to take quick photo's. My phone just isn't able to take very sharp images even when I manually focus. They always appear fuzzy. Anyways I think I'm going to put this one to bed. I get my KDM box next week so I'm not to sure if my next mini will be from that or continue with MD. I think I actually kind of want to paint a set of mini's and try some speed painting. Might do the trogs or dwarves from MD.

I am finding my go to highlight for metallics is Vallejo Air Chrome.

By the way the white armor looked 100% better after the wash, so great job saving the paint effort to that point.

Thanks for the kind words KruleBear. I've added the paint to my "List of paints I need to buy".

Quick question to anyone reading this. How do you go about removing the mini from the base when at least 50% of it is connected to the base? Feet are super simple to just "xacto" off, but doing something like this guy is, to me at least, scary with an xacto blade. I was thinking about a hack saw, but the blade is a bit thick. Maybe a dremel?

The Vallejo Metal Colour range is fantastic as well. Sorry if my suggestion before wasn't working, it seemed from the pictures that the metallic was darker than I think it was in real life. Not anything you can do now, but maybe next time work with a darker main colour to allow yourself scope for a highlight.

He does look really good though, I wouldn't be too worried.

As for the base, maybe try clippering off as much as you can before separating the last bits. See what you have to work with and then take to it carefully with a scalpel.

Looking forward to seeing what you do with the KDM models!

I think I might try the Vallejo range of metallics. I don't like how GW's range seems to "clump up" when I mix them and becomes a blob on the brush. Or is this common with metallic paints?

And great idea about clipping the base off! I never thought of that.

Primed the stuff I will be painting last night and will get a start on them this week. Doing something a bit different from the usual, but should be easy and fairly quick.
