Proxy Models in a Game...is it a sin?

My friend knows a guy who knows every rule for WHFB and 40k completely off by heart. He has no figures. He plays against himself in class with unlabelled scraps of paper as figures...

Hi,

Well, I think proxing to try a new unit is OK.
But we shouldn\'t forget that the tabletop-hobby is more than just a game. There are stories behind the miniatures, landscapes, even whole worlds and so I do justice to all this things.
That means to do it with style, e. g. nice scenery and fully painted armies (this site is about painting).
The game alone would also work if I use just the plasic-bases with stickers on them, but thats not what we want.

Bless me Father for I have sinned.

I have used a rock instead of a dragon and some plastic army men instead of brettonian.

\"AYE LAD....That is grevious indeed, say three Hail Marys, two of the Lords Prayer, and meet me in the rectory without any pants on, and all shall be forgiven...\"

If a model looks right, i don\'t give a rat\'s where it came from. I\'ve played necromunda campaigns with entire gangs made up of Warzone models. Of my three Blood Bowl teams, one is entirely converted from Warhammer models, one is entirely from another manufacturer, and the third is thrown together from at least half a dozen different sources.

Yes, there are stories. But if all I wanted was a story, i\'d read a book or watch a film. Gaming is interactive. My opponent(s) and I tell our own stories. And in my story, some of the characters might look a little different. It\'s about what looks good to me, what I want, and (sometimes) what I\'m willing to pay for.

What you describe here is not proxiing, it\'s using alternative or converted models instead of the regular ones. Of course theres no problem with that, it\'s even better than using regular models because it makes the army outstanding.
Proxiing is for example using a rock as a dragon (although I dont think there\'s really someone who has such sick ideas ;) )

Which Warlord minis are you not happy about. Personally, I think Reaper has moved way forward in their minis with the Warlord line.

I must confess, I am a proxier. I have used dice as monsters on the D&D table, I have used stand in sgts and captains in Warlord games for ones I did not own, but wanted to \'try before I buy.\'

@airhead

My complaints with Warlord is it is too generic. There is nothing about the backstory that popps. I do love the Klocke dwarves, but the thing is I have tons of Kelt infantry and Wolfen which make great wolfen models and merc infantry for Warlord. I refuse to buy figs for a game when I can use what I own.

When you consider that, technically, every mini on the table is a proxy for a sheet of statistics, however brief a sheet it is, it\'s hard to see how anyone can have a problem with it.

Imagine trying to play with an army of sheets of paper, laid out in formations...

The whole purpose of a miniature gaming is to play with miniatures. If it is too costly or time consuming to properly build an army then one should stick to video games. They are supperior in every way.

Personally If I did not like miniatuers so much I would stick to playing video games. they are quicker to setup and have the rules built in.
