Blimey Guys is just a week away till GD in OZ and no ones said a word!
Anyway I\'m sure there will be few you coming so I\'ll get the ball rolling with a few questions for everyone.
Who\'s entering? Where? What category?, and will you be finished on time?

In answer to these: I\'ll be there , entering 40K single at the Queens st store and i really hope like hell I can sneak out of some uni this week to get the damned thing finished :cussing:

Are the OZ GDs not all in the same place, or do you have heats? Or is it that you\'re just mentioning the name of the venue? Anyway, good luck.

We no longer have a Games day, but we do have a Golden Daemon.
This is now the third year so far that because of the tyranny of distance here in OZ we are having our GD conducted through three heats. Initial entry is done at your local store, and the best three from each category will then move on to the next round. The third heat ( the finals) is held in Sydney, and if like me you live too far away the good guys from GW will transport your mini\'s down there, and not lose them along the way (touch wood ;) )

only 3 from each store go through?!

Man, thats harsh, and people complain about the UK format!

Good luck to all, especially now I know how difficult it is to make it through to the finals!

What would happen if say there were only 3 entries for a particular catehory in one store, but all 3 were a bit pants and not worth a place in the GD finals?Would they go through still because technically they were the best 3 entries in that store?

Im not sure if we used to do that but im glad we don\'t. It would be to much of a lottery as to the quality of entries at your GW.

I think you may be right sg. I guess maybe when the contest got bigger and with Games Day and all, they moved to a larger venue that could have all the entries there.

Last year the category I entered only had 3 entrants and I asked if i had just been put through to the regionals as a result of this. The red shirts assured me that to go through to the next round you have to reach a minimum standard which is based of some sort of points system. If you’re really lucky in your area you might be the only entrant in your category at the local level, it happened last year.
I think it’s a great way of doing things firstly as I would never be able to enter otherwise and as you are also able to gauge your ability at the different levels (they give unofficial placings at the different levels).

it was similar to this in the uk a long time ago.
whilst i prefer that style after chatting with sebastion at gd uk he told me that the atmosphere was much better at gd uk simply because the sheer amount of people their and the sheer amount of entries, which i can fully understand.

good luck to every one who enteres/has enetered gd oz. :)

Yes, I remember when it was like this in the UK in 1992 when I was an 18 yr old red-shirt (or black shirt back then;) ) working at the Oxford Plaza store...

Interest seems to be hot and cold this year here it would seem. There are a number of \'veterans\' in the Oz painting scene who are not entering for one reason or another (and one not so veteran, who has recently just picked up a couple over in the UK neck of the woods - Sebastian :) )

After having been to a number of Games Days both in Australia and the UK over the last 15 years, it is pretty obvious that even when we had Games day in Oz ( as opposed to just the Golden Demon comp) that they were incomparable. The Oz GD attracted about 2000 people, whereas UK was 10-12 000+, plus the quality level simply was in a different league.

A couple things to bear in mind when understanding why the change in format over the last few years is to remember the size of the country; Perth to Sydney is what? 4000km? Even on the east coast the distance between the two major cities Brisbane and Sydney is 1000km or so.

Add to this our small population of 20 million ( as opposed to the UK with 56(?)million+ where you can drive from the top to the bottom in what a day and a half? ) and 3 or 4 million is just in Sydney, we\'ll never have the \'mass\' to have something as well attended as a UK GD.

It is a bit of a dissappointment on the day of the finals when you have less than a hundred people there crammed into one tiny store for the presentation ceremony, but unfortunately that\'s what we\'ve got to live with, and that is one reason why people may not have the same level of enthusiasm this year. Having said this, we are seeing new talent pop out of the woodwork every year in Australia and it will be good to see who steps up to the plate this year in some of the categories.

Wow... for a moment there i was beginning to feel i was the only ozzy here. My hopes and dreams of winning the slayer sword due only to a failure of anyone else entering has dwindled before my eyes:cry:
Anyway I now have an important question for everyone after rereading the category rules:

WARHAMMER 40,000 SINGLE MINIATURE:

This category is for single Warhammer 40,000 miniatures on a standard round slottabases size of 25mm. The category is for a single freestanding approximately humanoid sized figure which comes on a 25mm base.

Under these rules does it mean that awesome minis like these:
http://www.coolminiornot.com/138134
http://www.coolminiornot.com/170210
would be disqualified because of more than one mini on a base?

I called mail order and they said it would not be a problem if the extra mini could be classified as wargear. Unfortunately i mentioned this to a red shirt and he was less certain. He went furthere to say that for example a sheild drone would be ok if mounted on the same base, but not ok if a gun drone was mounted on the same base as a tau miniature. ???
I\'m damned confused by this and have a mini i have worked very hard on that i would not like to be disqualified because of it not being a single miniature.
I could remove the extra bit but it really would not look as cool.

Please help me, what should I do?

Well,

We just had the first round of local judgin here today and from the two stores I visited, I was quite unpleasantly surprised with the poor showing. Entries were down by at least half and the quality overall was not the best. Here\'s hoping there was some good stuff at the other stores and states. Any other news from the other states?

I agree the number of entries was certainly down but i disagree with the quality of the painting being lower than usual (aren\'t we always struggling to keep up with the rest of the world:cussing:).
Despite this i do believe that alot of imagination is lacking from entries this year and its probably partly to do with the fact that entrants don\'t want to be disqualified as a result of our apparently stringent category guidelines.
