New to miniature gaming

What color of Wash do you guys use? I'm using soft body black from secret weapon and it seems to be too dark. Maybe I should try sepia brown or some gray wash?

It seems my problem is still regarding the base. I've tried spackle (ends up powdery), gap filler (bad, takes too long to dry), wood glue + medium grit (bad), and just super glue + medium grit (kinda okay). Of course these are just my mistakes. I'm looking for better ways to fill the gap of the hollow bases
Only thing I have not tried is epoxy/sculpting epoxy
