Need Christmas Gift Ideas

Hi all, Ok I need some help. As silly as this sounds I need gift ideas for my 12 year old daughter. I know there are many parents on this site plus a bunch of youngster too... so here goes...

Torrie is 12 years old, very smart, an avid reader and listens to country music. She plays in her middle school band, gets straight A\'s. She does not paint minis, nor do sports, basicly she is a book worm band geek :) (that is how she decribes herself!)

All she has ask for, for Christmas is books.. well thats easy I have gotten her a couple of books she wanted. But I would like to surprise her with something she has not ask for.
I am on a limited budget so I am looking for affordable gift ideas....

So lets see those gift ideas not matter how wacky they are, you never know your idea must may be the gift my daughter gets!
Thanks
Gin

Clothes, CDs, DVDs, makeup, A gaming console one of those mini ones would be good (cant remember the name now I think its called gameboy DS) a mobile phone hmmmm thats about all I can think of.

What about some prepaid movie tickets/giftcard sort of thing so she can go to the movies. Maybe for two so she can go with a friend. Or a trip/pass to a local museaum or something. Sounds like she might like the educational type things.

What does she play in the band? Maybe some private lessons? or accessories for her instrument?

Make her a booklet of cupons that she can trade in for trips to the mall or someplace she might like to go but you might not feel like going..that way she can cash one in for \"her\" day out.

Hey I tried :)

has she read the inheritance trilogy? or the Dune series...

both of which come highly recommended from this book worm/geek.

I\'m trying to remember what I got at 12

I got makeup - it was the first year i was allowed to wear it...that was a big deal.

I got my first computer - i didn\'t have internet for a while, i remember writing poetry in word...i was thrilled

this may be a bit of what i (unobtainable) want coming out, but what about an animal? I don\'t know if you have a \"pet-situation\" already, but lap cats make for great reading partners...there are so many good cats and dogs looking for love at your local SPCA or Animal Shelter

Gifts.com is was a cool way for me to get ideas and generelizations...you can look by personality!

I\'ll keep thinking!

If you want budget, my mom got me a popcorn maker for my 11th birthday, and despite being pretty similar personality-wise to your daughter (by the sounds of it) back then, I loved it. I still have it seven years later.:)

Other than that, books sound great...what genre does she like? If she\'s a self-professed band geek, maybe find some cool music featuring the instrument of her choice?

buy her a flute, she might need it later down the line at band camp lol

seriously tho, if she is bit of a muso and book worm then combine the two.
it\'s a win win situation.

I\'m not sure what instrument she plays, but if it\'s one with a mouthpiece and she doesn\'t already own a whole instrument, you could buy her her own mouthpiece. Also if she practices at home, a music stand if she doesn\'t have one already. Maybe a framed poster or print with a movie or literary subject for her room? I think that\'s around the age where you want to put away your \'kiddie\' decor and make your room look more mature and stuff.

Oh guys, there are some great suggestions!!!
Lets see... she plays flute :) and her old flute bit the dust the 3rd week of school so we just invested in a Gemenhart (I really miss spelled that :()

I have been looking for a couple of CDs George Strait and Carrie Underwood, Have not been able to get my hands on the two she would like :(

I love the Movie ticket Idea.. .thats a keeper:D

as for books she reads all over the spectrum, every thing from mystery to fantasy, She has two copies of the hobbit, one for her and one to write in! (its a school thing) About the only thing she does not read is romance and Sci-fi (no matter how hard I try)
She has so many books that I can\'t keep track of what she has!

@IPM... yup she just started wearing makeup, just a little, she baby-sits for my Mary Kay lady...get paid in product
:D
As to pets.. Shoot no screaming icon... we have 6, yes 6 cats... no more pets!!!!

Nelson, I love the popcorn maker idea, she is a popcorn junkie!

@generulpoleaxe... I guess I shouldn\'t mention that her boyfriend plays the trumpet....;) (just kidding she doesn\'t have a boyfriend yet)

Duende, I don\'t think Torrie would like that one, but her sister would LOVE it!!!

Well, Thank you all for the wonderful Ideas!! I get to go shopping Friday so keep em coming!
Thanks
Gin

Pocket MP3 player.

My wife won one at work and passed it to me. Nice to select my own tracks and combine a random play when painting.

TAB, we actually got a really good deal on the flute and it is beautiful even used! She plays... not great but she tries :D We tend to refer to it as squeeching on her flute.

DR. MP3 player questions...
how to you get the music on it?
and is it the same as an ipod... heck what exactly is an ipod? More info would be great! I think she would like that, she has a cd player that she drags around... would this be better?
Thanks for any info this is a real possibilty depending on if we have to buy each song or if we can copy from her CDs.

Well, from what I understand (and I\'m no expert) ipods are Apple\'s mp3 players.
Here\'s an analogy:
mp3 player is like adhesive bandages
ipod is like Band-Aid

I have a Samsung brand one myself. I put music on it by downloading it from the CD onto the computer then transferring it to the player. They usually come with software and instructions, so I wouldn\'t worry about it too much. Much better than dragging around CD players, no skipping if you bump it, holds much more music, and easier to carry (much smaller!). I love mine!

:D

I have an ipod and I love it. Use it all the time. The ipods are the most popular with the most accessories available plus theres itunes which only for now works with ipods and its Apples downloading music service where you pay $1.00 per song or so much per whole CD. You can load you own CDS onto any MP3 player.

My suggestion to you is get one that has a volume lock on it that only allows the volume to go as high as you set it. The volume that comes out of this things is huge and can ruin hearing if played to loud. I know Ipods have a lock that a parent can set the volume and then lock it with a code to keep their children from playing it to loud. Might not make you the poplular parent right now but she will thank you later.

The new small ipod nanos wich are hardly larger than a 40x40mm base sell for $100.00 or less. They hold about 100 songs.

I have a 40Gig video that I have full of stuff from music, movies and image files of painted miniatures. I can put something like 20,000 songs on it and its smaller than a deck of cards. Plus I can plug it into my cars radio and play it there.. for hours and hours of endless music.. great for trips. Once drove 20 hour trip with out hearing the same song twice.

She\'s old enough for \"A wrinkle in Time\" if I remember correctly. there is also a book by Susan Cooper called \"Seaward\" that I really enjoyed.

Mine (courtesy of my wife) plugs into the PC via a USB port and I\'ve been ripping stuff off my CD\'s using Windows Media Player. Then It\'s just cut and paste. Also managed to download some Free Audiobooks but the quality was poor. (not the MP3 players fault, mine for being a cheapskate as I could have paid for better quality download.)
But if you are going in that direction, remember batteries, I seem to have chewed through a lot, due to accidently knocking the \"On\" button in my pocket.

Dougaderly: \"A Wrinkle in Time\":D I must have been about 12 when that came out. I enjoyed it as well.
