My First Sculpt

I am really enjoying these very old-school (totally agree w/ Rotten Factory's assessment there). The dwarf certainly has areas where I expect you to improve, but it looks remarkably good for a first effort and reminds me very much of the first minis I bought probably close to 30 years ago (though I didn't know then that people liked to paint them!). I am enjoying the great character you're creating around the thief, too. Excellent job!
Thanks, Toad! Yeah, I'm all about the 80's GW stuff. Btw, have you seen Otherworld Miniatures? That's the place to go for those who missed out on the 80's GW D&D sculpts.

Thanks to everyone who's given me feedback and encouragement, really! I'm just getting back into the hobby after many mini-free years, and am having so much fun! Your feedback and critiques keep me pointed in the right direction.

Speaking of which, Toad, I just saw your Deep One sculpt; WOW! I love it! I'm definitely going to have to sculpt some Lovecraftian 28mm fishmen soon! I've got a few other projects coming along: a baluchitherium, a xorn, but maybe after those guys...

More pics to come!

Very nice progress. I like the way You design Your miniatures. Idea with fabric looks great for me:).
I must say that if it's really your first miniatures You do it very well. My first miniatures looks like chestnuts ;P.
As You say: "there's a first time for everything". Hands are difficult to sculpt and i hate them :p. I always make it in two parts - 1 main shape of metacarpus and thumb(no more fingers), 2 i add the fingers and a little bit GS on thumb in joint (? bone part, don't know the english word). I find sth like this : https://xenite.wordpress.com/modeling-painting-and-hobby-articles/sculpting-hands-with-greenstuff/ it can be usefull too.
I keep my fingers crossed ! :)

Great article, RF! I really need to upgrade my tool-set. Currently, I'm doing everything with a push-pin, an X-acto knife, and a single ball-end.

While it's true I haven't sculpted any complete minis until these wee-folk, I have sculpted lots of conversions, and hundreds of bases, such as the "sewer" base for this otyugh I started painting last night:

Still getting back into the swing of painting, so it was pretty slow in the going. Tonight after work I'll get back on gnome duty. Until then...

Silicone tipped(google them they are sold all over). Black tips are Extra firm, Grey are firm (too soft for GS really but I keep one or two flat ones around for smoothing out surfaces)

Dwarf Playing Al Green

Ok, I did a bit more sculpting and painting last night. Almost finished my dwarf, but unsure about how to color his beard. I also need to finish the wood on his weapon, and the embroidered crest on his tunic.
I'm hoping once I get my new sculpting tools tomorrow in the mail, (thanks again to Zsoulless for the tip!) I'll have a better time with smoothing out my surfaces. I'm kinda laughing at the facial expression I'm getting here, and not sure if he means to kill his enemy or seduce them with his bedroom eyes, lol. The brass button on the pouch is my very first attempt at NMM, and I have to admit (even though this example sucks) it does help bring out the tiny metal pieces especially. Wide open to constructive criticism here, no kid gloves.

Impressive sculpting skills, keep practising and you'll be making more awesome minis in no time, I'm not much help on the sculpting front as all I can manage is greenstuff blobs of doom or at a push, small rocks lol

Thanks, Sicks! I looked at your gallery; great stuff!! Yes, for the longest time, I figured sculpting minis would be too hard for me, and stuck with conversions and basing. Now that I've taken the plunge, I love it! I can only hope to improve as much as some others on this board have.

This morning, I converted what I've always thought was a very nice sculpt, this kobold pirate by Valiant Enterprises.

The thing is, he has NO TAIL! How could a kobold be expected to fence with no tail? Hence, I had to perform codaplasty:

I'm gonna give this one some extra special attention. More soon...

Do not give up! I think that Your miniatures are quite good:), certainly better than my first.
I started from making conversions. it's a really good way for practise with tools and use new technics.
kobold with no tail - it's unacceptable !! ;)

This is a fun Lil thread mate , full of all sorts of stuff like sculpting and painting. Very fine job in sculpting and I really like that dwarf bud!!!

return after a long absence

Howdy, folks! I'd been away from the hobby bench for months and months, but got back into it a couple months ago. I spend most of my time prepping and basing my collection, but get a bit of painting in too. Here's a few things I've been working on of late:

An efreet conversion to an old mini I painted as a kid. I didn't even bother stripping it; just mounted it and adding a brazier, flames, and stonework. I just wanted this guy to be taller, looming over the adventurers instead of looking eye-to-eye. I also re-sculpted the eyes; the originals had indented pupils. :/ Could use any tips on sculpting flames.

This is my Nalfeshnee Type IV Demon, inspired by an alternate head I dug out of my bit box. Still lots to be done: hair, feathers, fingers, and planning a pentagram with candles too...

Did a bit more work on this otyugh that I started so long ago. Man, I'm the slowest painter in the entire hobby. This is definitely my first time sculpting poop for a vignette-base, lol.

This is a base done for my Reaper avatar of.. Sobek? Anyway, the alligator avatar. I'm going for the "temple rampage"-look. I made the pottery with bits of plastic pen, crushed with pliers.

Lots of other things too; I have a bad habit of working on hundreds of projects at once..

Thanks for the kind words, Blood & Rotten, & Happy New Year, everyone!

Nice work mate and I’m glad to see you back in the hobby. The Otyugh is looking really well painted, as is the temple base. Afraid I can’t offer any advice on sculpting, but maybe look at the way GW has done flames and smoke recently, they seem to have a sensible style laid down with it.
