How would you describe your style?

evil tendencies

Cake or Death?
I\'m looking over at a commission right now, and realized that I really, REALLY dislike bold colors these days. I find myself constantly trying to mix browns into the colors to grunge them up a bit. Even with space marine models, I\'m really trying to avoid the \"no dirt in space\" look.

So, just curious, what kinds of things do you folks try to do with your painting - by which I mean, what are the effects you are consciously trying to achieve at this point in your artistic development?

I think my style is kind of a \'grungy-sketchy\' style.

I also have a hard time using anything but dark and natural colors.

How about posting a pic of your stuff here on this post ET, so we can see if your \'idea\' of your style matches....

Impressionist. While I appreciate the \'uber polished/perfect blend\'s\' they get a bit redundant and lack reality.

My style is non-existent, as I stopped painting! :D

Though one of the reasons I stopped was because I noticed my style and skill deterioriating due to commission work. Commissions need squads of figures painted to an \"acceptable\" style. That just wasn\'t pushing my abilities nor was it helping me settle into a style.

Before I fell into commission hell, I was moving towards using a lot of unusual or contrasting colours subtly in shading. I was also moving toward sharper, more noticeable highlighting.

That said, I don\'t think I have a style as much as I just experiment with different techniques.

Realism. It\'s the thing I\'ve been working toward for most of my modelling life, since I was 15 or 16.

hows about a paint on the model, somewhat between the lines, and not in the pot, style. Does that work? If not, a sidereal mix of impressionism and dadaism. Yeah, the works, yeah.

i try to go for a grittier, more realistic look. i don\'t have high contrast or bright colours often. best answer for me so far has been \'inconsistent\' though. i only finish models rarely and often will rush things to get something finally done!

I mostly go for some sort of exaggerated realism... realism with a little extra. :D But, when I paint bigger stuff I tend to tone down the extra bit.

Depends. If I\'m painting something that is \'dirty\' (ork, fantasy humans, etc) I go for a more grit-dirt style, but something \'clean\', (Space marines) I go for brighter colors.

Hi guys, Phreak0 & Shawn, pointilism & impressionism are styles I\'ve thought about before for mini painting. More along the lines of doing a mini \"in the style of..\" or following a particular paintings colour scheme. I\'ve daydreamed about using plastic kits to achieve cubism & I like a lot of the expressionist stuff too, lots of heavy red colour schemes with thick oily brushwork. Dadaism I\'m less sure about, grind up a mini & throw it over a spiders web? If I get a couple done some time as the kickoff, I could start a gang WIP to see what we can all come up with.

With regards to where my work is now? I think I\'ve described it before as \"tabletop +1\" and I think there is a lot of old school \'Eavy Metal in there but being in the early stage of discovering the online painting community I \'m not sure where I\'m going. Enjoying the journey though :)

Some pretty interesting descriptions so far lol

Anyway I like Ritual\'s answer, realism with a little something extra. For my \"serious\" painting projects that\'s more or less what I\'m after now.

For army projects though it\'s all over the place. My Wood Elves were very much clean and bright, my Warriors of Chaos were very much inspired by the Warhammer Online concept art, so fairly dark but with a few very bright areas of contrast, and my latest army project of classic metal Dwarfs is sort of difficult to describe I guess. I think they\'re just a tribute to the old color schemes and everything, but using a bit more modern color pallet and basing scheme.

Abstract? does that count as a \'get out of jail free card\'?

In seriousness, I\'m trying for more realism these days, well, as realistic as a necromantically animated undead host and flying vampires can possibly get....

 I paint to achieve a mood or feeling and not so much for realism and want it to be my own style, when someone could look at a mini and say that’s a “wiccanpony” I\'ll be a happy puppy:D
