Historical minis and all that jazz...

My collection

includes quite a lot of non-military historical miniatures (Native Americans, Zulus, Samurai, Old West etc) in various scales from 54mm upwards. I discovered the milmod scene in the 80\'s when I got bored with painting orcs. Although I was never turned on by uniforms, a lot of ranges also include a few interesting fantasy figures as well as \'ancients\'. (Not a huge difference between a Celtic or Viking warrior and LOTR)

BTW, for those who didn\'t already know, the EuroMilitaire show in Folkestone next month is well worth a visit for fantasy figures fans. There\'s always some great miniatures tucked away amongst the Napoleonics - and the painting is amazing

The level of quality in historical minis has been raised considerably in the last few years. Not only are there more companies offering minis, but the long established names (Foundry) have been forced to keep up. Many companies are beginning to offer the \"whole package\" type of catalogs, with rules, minis, and paints available all from the same company. Battlefront WWII is doing this for 15mm WWII, ala GW style.

Sturmhalo: Have you seen many of the new WWII historics manufacturers? Take a look at the stuff by Crusader minis, Artizan design, and Black Tree design. All of their minis are superb and are the leading edge in WWII 28mm. I doubt you will be dissapointed!

Wow...

Ooooh...that Ashigaru is fantastic. I\'ve painted one from Poste Militaire - must get a pic posted on CMON - but he pales in comparison.

I must admit that I really do like the large scale military figures and the guys at Poste Militaire are terrific sculptors. Ray Lamb and Julian Hulis have done some great figures between them :D

Historicals

Well, as a long time historical gamer I can honestly tell you that most historical gamers are more concerned with getting their $ worth. That is why Old Glory is probably the most succesful all around historical manufacturer. The sculpts are hit and miss on quality, body proportions are terrible. You have the same base figure type used many times in different ranges and time periods but, you end up only paying around $1.00 US for a 25mm figure.
Also, I-Kore has a wonderful range of 15mm Greeks and an awesome line of ships for the greeks as well.
