Hate to paint

I reckon most of us have a colour we just don\'t like painting, either because it never comes out right or because it\'s a chore or maybe just because it looks pap.

Personally I don\'t enjoy painting whites or greens and really enjoy browns, blues & reds.

For pure curiosity\'s sake, which colour do you least enjoy painting?

I hate doing whites. Love it in small detail work but very difficult to get realy smooth when doing a larger area, like Space Marine armor for instance. just did one for an in store contest and wanted white armor with subtle shadows. It was a pain to say the least and didn\'t come out as smooth as I had hoped.

Reds.

It\'s that simple.. I keep trying to do red minis to practice, but I never like the look.. I\'ve only tried Vallejo\'s reds, and I hear using a bit of purple and orange for shade and highlight works.. I\'ll have to try that out one of these days.. :p

I agree with slidedog. How the hell do you highlight white ???

You can sometimes use blue for the shading and it looks ok for areas that should have a cold, cool look, but looks out of place in a desert scheme.
Likewise I have seen browns/tans used for shading as well as greys. But none give you the feeling that white is the prime color.
It is also the color that normally tends to end up looking chalky to me.

Pink! I don\'t know if it\'s difficult to do well or not, because I\'ve never painted anything pink. Don\'t like it!

I know white\'s difficult, but I don\'t hate doing it. It\'s one of those things that really tries your patience. If I set my mind to it and let it take time I usually pull it off.

I chose other because I don\'t like black. I don\'t hate to paint it, but I very seldom use pure black in anything. If I want it dark I use a really dark blue, brown, or charcoal grey.

Hm. I don\'t really have a truly hated colour, so I\'ll just \"think aloud\" and figure out as I write.

I enjoy painting blues and greens since the blends tend to come out better. Purples, love those, too, even though it\'s more of a struggle to get them to blend well.

I\'m thinking yellow is a hated colour, since I rarely if ever make use of it. I\'m going to have to paint a figure using yellows now just to see why I don\'t do it. <snicker>

Reds, I don\'t mind painting at all, but I hate photographing them since it\'s so blasted hard to get them to look as they do in reality.

Browns, I must love since I use them all the time. Same with black. White isn\'t so bad if you start with greys and just use the white to highlight... I certainly can\'t say I hate it.

Yeah, okay, I\'m going with yellow.

Actually, wait. I hate pink. I hate the way it looks. Pink is a sign of failure; it means I completely failed to highlight my reds (and sometimes those browns with reds in them). It makes you look at a miniature and say, \"Ooo, bubblegum. Yum.\" And then you bite into the miniature, and it\'s NOT bubblegum.

Yes, I hate pink. I\'m going with \"other.\"

Well, three months into the High Elf Army, I feel that I finally master white.
Actually, I don\'t hate any colour. If I can\'t paint them I see it as a challenge, and nothing is more rewarding than pushing yourself to (and beyond) the limit.

E-Arkham, I totally agree. I actually like painting reds and have gotten some great results, but they are bloody hard to photograph well. That is a hard spectrum to reproduce in most digital and printed media, always seems to over-saturate and lose detail. Oh well... at least they look good in person:cool:

You know what\'s interesting is that apparently the average human eye can distiniguish between more shades of green than any other colour. This is why nightvision goggles use green overtones. Something I think I saw on the Discovery channel once.

Since green is the contrast to red, it\'s seems to make sense that cameras and digital media have a hard time reproducing red.

But it does explain why green is such an easy and fun colour to mix. :D

I love pink. Tentacle pink is one of the colours I have the least trouble using! And you can alter its feel using a crimson, scarlet, or purple shading wash. Of course it has limited uses unless you paint only Slaanesh. Slaaneshi weirdo* FW ElDep is arguably one of the masters of pink here.

As for white, I had pretty good luck with it on Gandalf, but I run into problems with \"techy\" surfaces because white-coloured technological items should look \"clean\" IMO - unless they are specifially dirty. when I want the white to be \"cold\" or techy I shade with grey/blue, when I want it to be \"warm\" or organic I shade with browns. Plain white is its own highlight. Pretty straightforward.

Now, yellow on the other hand, *shudder*.

* if you\'re reading, FW, that\'s a compliment :)

Well after having just tried it for the first time, I have to say white is definetly a hard color. Can\'t say I hat just yet as I have only tried once, but it as strong potential to become a hated color.
I think I\'d have to go with very light blue for the hated color, I never seem to get it right.

Lets see, I actually like white and red and black (go figure after all the darn witchhunters I\'ve painted)...

I think I dislike yellow, I don\'t think I\'ve ever really used it except for in nmm gold, so hmmm, maybe I do like it...

I don\'t think there is really a color I dislike using, just those I\'m not as comfortable with from disuse, like...well, anything other than red, black and white really...

Look at Sargant, and Rembrant. Use as a base color, a slightly off white. Slightly blue (makes for really clean looking white), yellow ochre (makes for a warm, kind of cotton-linin look) Black-grey (makes for a neutral, mabey paper look). One thing that seems really obvious but is real important is, when getting to the pure white highlight, use a good CLEAN white that COVERS WELL. Alot of times I will paint something white and actually think it\'s white only to go back, add a little more on top and notice that the original coat wasn\'t thick enough. What I thought was pure white was actually a very light shade of whatever was underneath. It\'s a small difference but when you\'re dealing with white all you have is that small range so you gotta get it right. Also, painting white can be similar to doing NMM. Good blending is crucial. White\'s a tough one. As to pink, I have found a few good solutions. I dont use GW paints so I dont know the goofy names (snot green, puke orange etc..). Magenta can make an OK pink and I think it\'s just called ROSE makes a perfect pink.

I had to vote other as I don\'t really have a colour that I hate more than any other. It\'s prettty much all of them that I hate painting equally.

Hopefully I can paint something that looks halfway decent over the christmas holiday.
