Grainy primer?

I went to the store today to buy a few flesh tones, and it was the manager that helped me find them. I told him about my primer and he gave me a new one - haven't tried it yet though (and gave him the old one back). But he said that if I wasn't satisfied with the result I should try to spray somewhere else and if that still gave me problems I should come in again and he would give me a new primer (he ofc said I had to shake it well etc.).

And last but not least he said I could do that until I was satisfied - and if it didn't work out he would personally spray my minis. :D

So either I get satisfied with the gw primer or I am set for life in that stuff :D

Looking forward to trying the new can - as well as the one from amazon I ordered yesterday.

I personaly use gw which can be grainy depending on the distance, the temperature, the humidity, etc... I found tamiya ts-27 white matt primer and it is quite amazing, small can but the paint is thin and dries completely matt. Really nice product, but surely more expensive than in a hardware shop.

Kudos to that manager!

I tried the new white primer today. Gave it a long shake, heated it with water and sprayed the correct length away - air humidity 50% (that is as low as it comes if I do it outside).

A bit more smooth but still have small grains in it - I am beginning to think that it is normal and that I won't see that when I paint. The small chunks as seen on the weapon and jetpack is gone with the new primer but upon really close inspection it still looks like it has small grains.

I am starting to think that it is normal for such grains - and that you just don't see it on black since it is black.. Still waiting for my grey primer, so I might have to wait and see if there is a difference - especially on the finished product (aka painted mini).

Well even in this picture you can see some light texture, but thats how it is with primers. I would still consider that rather well primed. And isn't primer supposed to be slightly textured so that it hold the layers of paint better? Besides, layers of paint will also "reduce" the graininess or make it less visible, just like you thought. You just see even smaller textures pretty well in those supersupersized pictures you most likely have taken for closer look :smile-big:

Also when applying spray, use short bursts and move the can almost like painting with a brush from one side to another. Don't try to cover everything with a few single bursts, for that is how I usually managed to get slightly too rough surface.

Thanks, my figure is slightly less grainy. And it is the figure with the most layers of primer I have done so far (kept finding mold lines I had missed) but it looks rather smooth so far.

Edit: cool mini btw.
