Farewell To The Flesh....Building A Chaos Space Marine Army On A Budget

Hi guys, in case anyone doesn\'t know who i am, i started a poll on the Warhammer 40k thread about whether or not to start a Loyalist Space Marine Force, or a Chaos Space Marine Force.

As of today, Chaos is the winner of the poll. And so i set off merrily to my local GW and bought a couple of box sets. Now my aim with this project is to do all this on a strict budget of a certain amount of money per month.

The inspiration from this comes from an old UK White Dwarf mag where Paul Sawyer (the then editor of said mag) collected a Chaos army for WHFB on a budget. My budget per month will be around the £40 mark. (You can obviously change this figure to suit your own needs, i just picked this figure just now.) And whatever i don\'t use from the budget will be carried over onto the next month to put towards other stuff. So without further a do, lets get started.

So the first thing i bought today, was a Chaos Terminator Lord box, and a Chaos Marine box, plus Chaos Black primer. All in all it cost £36, so i can use an extra £4 next month. Now seeing as how i paid a lovely £12 for the Chaos Lord and you only get one model, i\'ve decided to be sneaky with this a little bit. I\'ve just finished building my Chaos Lord (il put pics up shortly) And now i\'m hacking and taking bits off of a Loyalist Terminator, and using the rest of the bits to create a Chaos Sorcerer.

This army will be follower of Slaanesh. Hope this thread doesn\'t disappoint, and maybe it\'ll give people an idea if they want to do a similar sort of thing.

EDIT:- I\'ll be putting the first pics of my Lord on in a few minutes, just need 2 get my camera sorted, the Sorcerer will follow once i get a metal arm to stay glued to the plastic body!

I will be following this with great interest (and improving my math skills as Ido the currency conversions in my head).

And with regard to the plastic/metal minis, though they can result in phenomenal models, I hate them. That is why I haven\'t bought a Vindicator yet, as I am waiting on the all plastic version.

@Thunderhawker:- tell me about it - i\'ve just cursed the air blue trying to glue this arm onto my sorcerer, i\'l probably have to add a little blob of GS to it tomorrow after the glue has dried.....

OK so here\'s the first update. First up is a couple of pics of my Chaos Lord, Rayne. Nothing fabulous here, all iv done is built him exactly as the box, only i\'ve added a head from the Chaos Marine Accessory Sprue. (If these links don\'t work, please someone tell me.)

Next up is my Chaos Sorcerer Suralesh. Now this guy was fun. I\'ve spent most of the night chopping up bits of what used to be a Loyalist Space Marine Terminator. So here\'s what i\'ve done.....Firstly, i\'ve cut off the front part of the torso, and replaced it with a Chaos one, added the sorcerer head, and force weapon, removed the crux terminatus, added shoulder trophy racks and a chaos shoulder pad, a tabard from the sprue, and finally my pride and joy (Which will be used as a Blissgiver) A Space Marine Terminator Librarian Force weapon arm, with the top part cut off and replaced with the sword blade of a WHFB Tomb Kings Ushabti....sorry for the rotten pics but it\'s nearly 1.30am here, and the Blissgiver arm hasn\'t bonded yet (hence the reason for the guy being on his side), I\'ll get better pics tomorrow after i\'ve added a little bit of green stuff, and primed them ready for painting. I forgot to add in my last post that the chapter here will be called \"Children of Shan\'dai\"

Is that a winged DA head on the Chaos lord\'s trophy rack...?

If so - I feel it might be a bit distracting, maybe worth replacing it with a less fancy helmet.

looks good so far :p

@DaN:- yeah i thought so too, i\'ll maybe trim it off and just do a normal SM helmet. Thanks for the comment :D

@DaN - Its Chaos! Its all about distraction and, well, chaos! I thinks its a nice touch, and if he tones down the rack with either muted colors or maybe some spattered blood, it may be a great touch!

Btw guys, if you go to www.bolterandchainsword.com, and go into Painting and Artwork, and Works In Progress, i\'ve up a thread in there called Farewell to the Flesh as well, they have an interactive chaos space marine painter and i\'ve drawn up a colour scheme - let me know what you guys think (if you can see it, i tried putting a link to it on here before and it didn\'t work properly lol)

that scheme while cool, will drive you nuts to actually paint, constantly having to switch colours back and forth

i would hang myself :p

Hehe, more the point of chaos then!!! It\'ll maybe take a wee while as i\'m priming them with Chaos Black, so all the pink bits i\'ll have to repaint skull white first, then do the blue bits after the pink bits are finished.

I intend on trying to do them as they GW have on their site under Slaanesh. But hopefully you guys will give me some tips if they don\'t look too good!

Looks great, like the colour scheme alot, and as you\'re spending a budget per month, you won\'t go too crazy as the ammount you need to paint each month won\'t be too OTT.

To get that arm, and other similar pieces to stay, I\'d highly recommend pinning stuff, grab a GW drill and use paper clips. I\'m only a beginner myself but find the drill really usefull for alot of things, such as pinning or drilling out bolter ends etc.

I like the colour scheme too - even if it\'s gonna be Slaanesh :p

I hope you have some noise marines in your army :D

@TH - you could be right - I hope I\'m proved wrong, but there\'s so MUCH stuff on your average CSM that it can get a bit much :)

EDIT: Btw, those GW drill bits can also fit in a decent leccy drill if you got one - though I wouldn\'t recommend it for more delicate work or for the lower diameter bits! :p

I may change the DA head to an Eldar head....actually DaN i\'m glad you brought that up - i want to have Noise Marines, but i\'m not sure where to get the components to convert them....

Dude - I saw a WIP thread on B & C where someone scratch built them :)

In fact I saw 2 - 1 was rubbish :p, but the other one looked cool

OK So just a quick update to show i HAVE been working on stuff. So far i\'ve just been building the stuff i\'ve bought, so no primering done yet, i\'ll leave that for tomorrow, then i can start on the painting!

The first unit of Chaos Marines i\'m working on is my unit of Chosen. So without further ado i\'d like to introduce to you:- Aspiring Champion Arakanthus. Using just the bits from the Chaos Marine and Chaos Accesory Sprues

AspiringChampion1.jpg

AspiringChampion2.jpg

AspiringChampionBackpack.jpg

Next up, Icon Bearer Tyrellius, using bits from the Chaos Marine, Chaos Accesory and Chaos Terminator Lord Sprues (just goes to show how versatile the new Chaos plastics really are) When you look at it it looks like hes leaning back slightly - kind of my way of him shouting his victory to slaanesh kinda thing.

At the time of typing this, i\'ve now built my Marine with Heavy Bolter and my Plasmagunner, and am in the process of finishing building my Meltagunner, and tomorrow i\'ll finish my Marine with Flamer and the other 2 marines. Unfortunately, the batteries died in my camera so il have to wait till tomorrow to get new ones and post pics of them - but by that time i\'ll have them primered black, so hopefully they will be better pictures. Sorry for the blurry pics guys, i was holding onto it at the time while trying to move the model around. Anywho, as always, C&C welcomed!

Edit:- On the Icon Bearer, i was going to add one of the collars from an Empire Wizard, however when i put it on it looked too much like a thousand sons armour!

Time for another update.....

The building work is finally finished, and as i type this i\'m waiting on the chaos black primer to dry and then i can start the painting part. Heres some pics, first up the heavy weapon marines....

Now they might not look like much at this point to you guys, but i\'m quite chuffed as this is the first time i\'ve taken my time with som 40k models. I\'ve tried to remove as many mould lines as i could, and i\'ve actually tried posing a few of the marines as well. I\'ll get some more pics later on once i\'ve put down the basecoats of paint on them. I\'ve left the weapons off of them intentionally so that i can get into the bits that are normally hidden by weapons so i can paint them properly. C&C Welcomed as always.

Looking good so far! Though I\'d like to chime in with the folks saying that that paint scheme will drive you nuts. I\'m doing my loyalist marines in a similar way, with DA Green and Elf Flesh, and it\'s a tremendous pain in the ass to paint. I actually altered the scheme for Assault and Heavy troops, in order to minimize the amount of areas I\'d have to do in Elf Flesh. Still have a couple Tac Squads to do in the scheme of Madness... I suggest you just try it on one of your basic squads and then decide from there.
