Experiments in stripping

well....stripping plastic models anyway lol

i tried looking for Mr Muscle foaming oven cleaner that ive heard mentioned but the shop i was in didnt have any and the only one it did have said not for use on plastic. it did however have foaming drain cleaner which i bought and experimented with.
i was recently given a load of old high elf models, rather badly painted so i stuck a plastic and a metal one in a bag with the drain cleaner and left it overnight.
the results were mixed. the plastic model still has a lot of its paint even with scrubbing it for ages but the metal model nearly took all the paint off after some intensive scrubbing with a dishwashing brush. (this product lets off some nasty fumes too)

the second attempt i had was whizz oven cleaner and pan scourer and it was used on one of those sponge scourer things you do dishes with.
i dont recommend this, it had very mixed and varied results.
it took a bit of the paint off the metal model but it also took off some of the smaller details in his cloak which ill have to file down again.

so far the most effective thing ive found is a nail varnish remover which is supposed to moisturise the nails. i havent got enough to test dipping the model in it but it works well enough on a cloth rubbed onto the model. im currently trying to strip a balrog and a waveserpant. its made the surface of the waveserpant go dark though so im having to sand/scrape it off with the edge of a razorblade. its going to take a bit of work still i think.

can anyone tell me the exact name of the mr muscle oven cleaner that works and does anyone have any products that DONT work. everyone says products which do but i want to know if theres stuff that will melt my models/burn my hands off etc

You\'re in the UK right? How about just trying Dettol? Should be available everywhere.

Much safer and less messy than oven cleaner, probably cheaper too

If I remember correctly Dragonreaches prefered method of stripping metal and plastic is the pine flavoured detol.

thanks, i will look for it but the only dettol i remember seeing is a type of spray on disinfectant, is this dettol a type of cleaner rather then a disinfectant?

you said the don\'t uses well pretty much any paint strippery things on plastic but I guess thats a no brainer.. I have a particularly nasty one that has a slightly thicker than yoghurt consistency.white tub all the warning labels are in some kind of arabic and it\'s simply caledd high strength paint strip. left a few models in it a few weeks ago.. didn\'t realise that one of the models had a plastic part ..that went .... and to cap it off in my infinite wisdom left it in the plastic tub for a couple of days and it ate it\'s way through that.......fecking bottled Alien Blood

Make sure you get regular Dettol. I tried the odorless one this weekend because my other half cant stand the smell. It doesnt work.

well i tried Dettol and it does work very well...im not keen on the slimeyness it leaves on the model but i think ive managed to get rid of that with washing up liquid. ive nearly finished stripping my alrog models finally so ill be able to repaint him soon.
i got the model cheap second hand but the undercoat was so thick it had bubbles in places that had set into the paint. fortnately whoever had owned it hadnt painted anything more then undercoat or id have been stripping paint for all eternity.

Being from NA, I don\'t know what Dettol is, but odourless forms of very toxic strippers only have additives to eliminate the smell, they don\'t actually remove the toxins that cause the smell, so you\'re still inhaling the (possibly carcinogenic, but usually toxic) molecules and just not knowing it.

Dettol is just the UK version of PineSol... so not very toxic either way (scented or non), relatively speaking.

I don\'t think that\'s right. This might be true for some but if the example of mineral spirits is paralleled then they\'re less smelly because they have certain volatiles removed; they\'re not masked, they\'re not present.

And aren\'t low-odour strippers noted for being a bit crap? If so then that\'s a definite pointer to the good stuff being outta there!

Anyway, easy enough to find out for any specific examples - check the MSDSs and look for the Permitted Exposure Levels (PEL).

i use breakfluid - this car break lubricant which comes in a yellow tub

not cheap but you can use it over and over and over and over and over and over and over again

brilliant stuff that break fluid it is...

Dettol Does, as does very carefully applied(via Q-Tip) Acteone on local areas.

Gah I wish I\'d seen this thread earlier. I just went out looking for Simple Green and ended up chancing a model in Cif oven cleaner in an attempt to remove a screwed up primer coat. There was Dettol on the shelf right next to this stuff. Still, it seems to be working.

Edit: After six hours the oven cleaner has lifted the primer off almost completely. Unfortunately it\'s also completely obliterated the superglue and done for most of the green stuff as well. Nice way to get the mini back to its component parts though...

Definitely Dettol is the way and you can dilute it and it still works.

To get rid of the stringyness it gives to paint sometimes I use eld electric toothbrush and some soda crystals in warm water.

I still find though that some of the plastic figures are stained by the paint sometimes

It does work pretty well and suffers infinite reuse. I believe it still has to be disposed of as a hazardous waste. But why dispose of it?
