Daemonette WIP (NSFW, duh)

And with that, the daemonette creep factor has gone from catholic priest to Michael Jackson. I'm very interested to see how this turns out... I like the gouge from the one toe. Hopefully you plan on painting that red and bloody.

I was seriously looking forward to painting this today. Paint had just been acquired, model had been carefully washed, and then two facts were brought to my attention:
1. Daemonette arms, especially their joints, are really spindly. I'm not one to talk, myself, but I am fortunately not made of plastic. I noticed this when she was getting put together, but pinning is not feasible for me at that size, I don't think.
2. A fact that I am sure very few people can possibly comprehend: Dropping things like this sucks.
I am set back a day or two (curse the curing times of poly cement and green stuff). This was going to be the first paint that I would have applied to a miniature in over a year, I believe.
I am not a patient person!

So I think that despite my prototype not yet close to finished overall, some other daemonettes will now take shape to sate this hunger as best I can (Yes, this annoyingly pictureless post was largely to vent my frustration rather than communicate something useful).

@PegaZus:
I was considering using a palm-print for some severe lines. And I considered hair too (there're some nice long grass type products out there which seemed reasonable). However I wanted the skin not to be human (or similar) skin scaled up, but the same kind of thing over a (much) larger area. It may look entirely unconvincing though, it's true. I'm prepared to carve the base off and start again if the (eventual) painting of it dissuades me.
Something I have just considered for a flesh-like look is the addition of veins - under the surface in this case, but some slightly bulging blood vessels might be apropos on later figures.

@mickc22:
Ron Mueck's work is plain creepy. I always see them as having a horrid dead look to them - like they could have been alive recently, but all life has since been somehow removed.

@Prophecy07:
Bloody, yes. Red, no. Far too natural!

(Ugh, this text box is horrible. It keeps throwing my view back to the start of the text.)

Apologies for the double post, but as said before, this log is as much a motivator for me as it is a medium for showing you guys what I do...

You don't want to read loads, and I will undoubtedly write far too much here next time anyway, so I'll let this picture speak for itself and be off to bed.

Obiter dicta:
- I find the tails of the daemonettes actually somewhat obscene.
- Digitigrade legs are just so damn cool.

Another little-known factoid for you: Pushing a knife into your thumb is not a pleasant experience.
(Additional and even more unnecessary discovery: getting acetone into such a wound is even more unpleasant)
Don't think I'm trying to excuse lack of work. Not at all! Bring on the bad photography! (What little photo-mojo I had has left me for the moment)

I've been rebelling ever more when it comes to breast size. The first one displays something close to my upper bound for the squad (there's got to be a better word for a unit of daemons). The next one is either going to be something between the latter two or instead stretching my upper bound a little.
I thought a fairly male-looking chest would shake things up a bit - no, s/he hasn't got defined pectorals: 1) I wanted it to be just as smooth and curvy as the others, and they certainly don't have well-defined muscles, and 2) I don't want too much physical detail in certain ways - they're daemons, not 'real' material creatures. To this same end I have ensured they have no navels (which sadly removes a location for a piercing) nor any visible ribs. Even I think this sounds like excuses, but those were my honest thoughts!
The middle one there deviated from the current trend towards flat crotches, but then I stupidly went and gave it a belt that rather disguised that fact. Ah well. Don't worry, Prophecy07, I'll cater for you eventually...

I must say I am coming round to this kit now. The first daemonette has almost the most static legs in the set. As can be seen from the rear shot of daemonette #3, there's even a bit of slinky walking going on...

@Lyuun:
I would hardly say I'm great, but I know I've progressed since I started. I'm gaining confidence rapidly regarding how much I am willing to muck about with green stuff.
I could just say "Practise makes perfect", but personally I hate practise! Instead, a handful of things that I found helped me work better, and thus feel better about my work:

Get some sculpting tools. I know that most good people end up making their own, but as an amateur they give you a good starting block, and they're really not expensive at all - you don't need anything fancy. Personally I absolutely adore rubber shapers - they are good for smooth curves, and putty seems disinclined to stick to them.

Keep your tools wet - One of my largest discouragements when I was beginning was the way putty would adhere to the tool more than the model and I would undo work in an instant.

Muck about with the ratio of blue/yellow. I'm now preferring more yellow (as can be seen by the brighter greens for the later work on these minis) - the putty is much softer, but on the downside it is softer! Also stickier. I haven't even experimented with other types of putty yet - I hear that blue/white (aluminium-based?) is very good for crisp edges, and when I'm doing something less organic I'd like to give it a try.

But these are just things anyone would say. I don't give them because I think I'm an expert (ha!) but because I think it a shame when I hear someone say "I wish I could...". Only a little time and you will be able to. For me, the pre-paint steps are the most rewarding (But then, I truly am a complete beginner when it comes to paint - I'm sure I'll enjoy that more as I progress).

However, the most important tip I could ever offer you on sculpting, though it applies equally to any vaguely creative work:
Make something you're enthusiastic about.
It helps keep you focussed and encouraged. When I was doing my Imperial Guard (I'll get back to you one day, guys), much as I had a vision for them there was no true enthusiasm. The human body (well, close enough on daemonettes) interests me far more (and that sounds rather pervy, does it not?) - it's been my focus in 2D art, and understandably it feels more natural with minis too.
The Guard I was doing just to get them completed and fitting my ideas. With these I am also enjoying the process itself.

Hope I didn't sound pompous through all that. So yeah. If you've got the ideas, go for it. Make something cool. I'll be looking out for it.

That issue you had, whether to let the strap fade into the Aethyr or lap around and how the tail could get in the way. Made me recall the Neshi' icon. You considered incorporating that symbol at all? Maybe in a full on bondage suit. Could maybe have the hollow circular end wrapping around a tail, with the icons fronds leading up theback and around beneath the bust, and the crescent at the othen end heading around the neck.

Got any plans for chains on some instead of leather? I'm less inclined and proficient than you with sculpting, so if so I'd be looking at fine costume chain to save on sanity.

Just amused myself by imagining one model in latex with zips. Could also go with a ripped body stocking on another. Either of them being close fitting could be an opportunity to show off a bulge down there if you wanted to up the AIGH factor.

Aside: Could consider a collective for daemons as a host. Certainly has precedence in our religions eh.

Wouldn't worry about the absence of a belly button removing a place for a piercing. Like you said, they're manifestations rather than real flesh, so normal rules don't apply. Could have a piercing anywhere eh.
Always had a weird idea about a full head piercing on something so Chaotic - that is, a ring that goes into the head behind/above each ear and through the skull. A big ring at that, through a gaping hole. Like one of those ear piercings folk have they've built up to with ever increasing sizes of rings. Might be too much for even something as otherworldy as these though eh.

No nice boobies :( Lucky that Vike didn't see this.
That is some lovely sculpting there. I like the one with the lock.

I've been somewhat distracted by Carnivàle, The Lost Room, Assassin's Creed, Dragon Age: Origins and programming a physics engine from scratch. As much fun as these things are, I was aiming to finish a daemonette every week this year, on average, and so I'm falling well behind. But I reckon there's still hope.
Let's have some pictures!

(Is that direction gradient better?)

I'm feeling fairly good about all of these. Hacking off their previous garments means a lot of flesh has to be added, but I think I'm doing a reasonable job. That last one here has a tail off-centre - I reckon I can fix that, fear not. I really don't dig the wrinkled forehead on the first, but I'm sure that should be a quick thing to amend.
I am seriously looking forward to getting a bit of undercoat on these - I think most of my green stuff work is quite smooth, but in these photos it catches the light oddly. It's hard to tell, thanks to the shininess and the colour difference with the plastic, whether the shapes are actually right.

I'm intending the skin to be almost black, using purple to avoid it being grey. Originally the plan was to use gloss varnish to give a cheap PVC-like effect. I think that might be a bit much - perhaps a satin finish though. More recognisably purple colours used for lips, welts, scales. Pale lilac for teeth and claws.
Now, those I am fairly happy with. My problem concerns their straps and collars and so on. With all those purples for the 'living' parts of the models, I suppose the non-living parts should contrast somewhat. However, I don't want a vibrant colour-contrast, and I don't think I can get away with anything too light as it will draw the eye too much - ideally the face should be the focal point, and with such dark skin it will be difficult I think - (White eyes will help I believe).
So yeah. The gist of that rambling was: colour suggestions for the 'leather' type parts?

Oh, and the base? I really like the idea of a flesh base, but I think that is likely to clash with the figure. I am currently thinking of trying a marble effect instead.

@Wyrmypops:
I am intending to use the symbol as part of the garment on the unit champions - the others should stay relatively plain. It's been fun trying to create variation without losing ostensible function - perhaps I should go into designing these things for real :p
There'll be no other clothing - the black skin is meant to evoke the feel of a full latex suit with the added weirdness of it clearly being living skin.
No chains at all I'm afraid. They are good strong symbols, and I have plans to use them in two other, somewhat related, forces (Ha, 'forces'. I don't play, I just envisage themed collections) - the lack of them in this one is intended to contrast. None of these folks are restrained unwillingly - the accoutrements are more a symbol of possession. I'm trying to work in a fairly strong metal ring theme (think collars, leashes &c) that I hope should become more apparent.
As is fairly obvious, I put a lot more time into thought and concepts than I do into actual production...

@A Luna:
Sorry! I'll try to limit the number of those ones!

This is too much like a 'spot the difference' post. Still. Photos:

Let's be quite honest; the next time any of these will look properly different is when they get arms or paint. Sometimes I think I'm working slowly to put off painting (and wrecking) these models of which I am increasingly proud. Still, as long as I thin my paints, some mishaps shouldn't totally destroy them - I will be learning basically how to paint on these though... :S

Could mitigate that "Aigh, I'm gonna ruin 'em" feeling with a dry run paint job on one you haven't spent so much converting time on. Or if there ain't any left, just trying out the intended colours and process of blending on spare plastic "bits", or one of the crappier mini's everyone seems to have wallowing in the bottom of a box somewhere.

Though if the converting skills are owt to go by, you're being modest and the paint jobs shall be equally glorious. :brushwave:

Right. The unthinkable has happened! Daemonette 1 has now been sprayed and basecoated.
The following are truly hideous pictures. They are not meant to be illustrations, but merely light-source reference as I come to highlight her. I've amped up the contrast in horrible ways to get reasonable discrete pools of light.

daem1-7.png

The spraycoat showed me some areas which needed further smoothing. However, some I was not able to fix. I am somewhat annoyed - I was perhaps hoping for the uniform colour to perform something of a miracle and show me that my blends were perfect...
On the other models, this may be recoverable. I hear tell of people using a very watery milliput solution to cover putty blend points - has anyone used this to good effect?

Also, I wasn't being modest when I talk about learning to paint on these. I haven't painted anything but my nails in a couple of years, and even back then I never tried blending, highlighting, shading...

Anyway, to work! Annoyances aside, I'm pretty excited by this new development...

Edit:
Haha, I just went to pick up the paper I put this on during the spraycoating and noticed that, rather appropriately, I had used the escort pages...
