They examined the cat and determined that is was not a pet. They figured that it came down from Wisconsin. Last time a cougar was seen was In 2000, a train struck and killed a 110-pound male in Randolph County southeast of St. Louis. In 2004, a bow hunter in Mercer County southwest of the Quad Cities killed a 95-pound male.

Before that, the last confirmed sighting of a wild cougar in Illinois was in 1862 at the state\'s southern tip.

Don\'t they have animal control officers in Chicago?
why not jsut contact one of the local gangs? i am sure they had better and more accurate weapons to lessen the threat of stray fire uppn nearby children.

time those gangs start giving back to their community! (not to say they want break in and steal it again next week anyway  )

according to the reports there was no time to wait for animal control. animal control even stated that even if they shot it with a tranqulizer there was a good chance it would have escaped. It had been reported that one witness saw it leap a 6 foot high iron fence. Beside would you mess around with a 150lb 5 foot long cougar?
As for the gangs there to busy shooting inocent bystanders.

I can\'t run, but the few thousand miles between us is an obstacle.

That\'s why they made airplanes, for cougars to hunt abroad. You\'re still not safe sonny!

According to the reports by Animal Control in Chicago, the tranquilizer darts require 15-20 minutes to take effect. During that time, you have a pissed off cat that is less able to run and more likely to attack. Even then, the odds are in the cats favor of escaping and hiding before the dart takes effect.
