Captain927 W.I.P Log

Hi All,

I recently discovered this site and have decided to jump in feet first. I am and have been primarily a WW2 modeller in Braille Scale, but have also tried my hand at 1/35 and 54mm. In an attempt to better my figure painting skills, I have been looking through many sites and returned to fantasy model painting. I have a number of the old Rackham line (that I had originally purchased with the intention of an elaborate chess board), that I am now revisiting to improve my blending, highlighting, and metal/NMM.

I am starting up with one of the Rackham Soldiers of the Plains and have reached this point. It has been primed with Tamiya Primer and has been base coated with Vallejo Brown Sand and received two highlights at this point.

Hopefully this W.I.P. will keep me on track and moving along at a decent pace.

All comments, criticisms, and tips are welcomed and appreciated.

Cheers

Update #2

Hi All,

I was also working on this Rackham Dwarf Armourer. I've painted him up and just have to finish up his anvil and backpack. I'd tried to do NMM for his armour but it wasn't working for me, so I just used metallics. I'm of two minds as to how it turned out. I'd like to try out NMM on my Soldier of the Plains (from previous post).

Painted with Vallejo Acrylics.

Comments and criticism welcome.

Hi Captain,

I like your skin tones and overall the armorer is looking good. The gold however is a little flat. I suggest some glazes into the deepest portions (shadows) of green, purple, and brown. Likewise even a single highlight layer should help up the contrast. If you want to keep it simple, place some silver highlights on the highest points to make the gold pop overall. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks Eusi.

It's pretty difficult to see but there are some shadows and highlights, but they don't add much contrast. I'll try out the glazes and see how that goes.

Thanks for the feedback.

Update #3

So a bit more work done on the Soldier of the Plains. Basically just flesh shadows and highlights. I blocked in the beard colour too which has softened some of the deepest shadows.

Comments and criticism welcomed as always.

I really like the face on the finished dwarf. Agree about the gold, which is a little overwhelming.
This new guy looks like he's coming along nicely. Can't wait to see those color glazes on the skin give him some more character.
Welcome, too!

Update #4

Thanks SaintToad. The gold is really overwhelming. I'll try and tone it down the the glazes as mentioned above. Hopefully that will work.

As as for the Soldier of the Plains (let's just call him SoP from here on), I threw some more paint on him yesterday. Doesn't look like a lot right now but I painted the axe handle, blocked in all of the armour and metal colour, and started working on the inside of the shield. Once I get the armour shaded and highlighted, I can glue it.

I mentioned this a couple times above, but I want to learn to paint NMM. This SoP seems a good place to start as he doesn't have a lot of metal, but enough decent places to practice on. Any tips on how best to approach this? Help would be greatly appreciated. I'll add glazes for colour and depth to the face tonight.

Comments and criticism welcome.

Cheers.

Update #5

I tried my hand at some NMM on the armour. I think I over emphasized the shadows too much and the gold is off. Overall, it's an okay first attempt. I'll try to keep the total gradients to two shadows and two highlights.

Really had had trouble with how the lights and shadows should fall on the ax. My first and second attempt at it failed miserably. I'll keep doing some research and see how it goes later on.

Apologies for the pictures. I can't seem to scale that one down.

Comments and criticism welcome.

Update #6

I finished painting the first of 8 SoP last night. I think the blending on the shield worked out pretty well for the steel colour, but the gold again, didn't.

Its all a learning curve and I'll get it sooner than later hopefully.

Working on a simple base for him now. Sticking with the 25mm square base as it may still become a chess piece.

Comments and criticism welcome.

Cheers

Not sure why the photos end up on their sides. I had to work through photos on mine.
As I had an imgur.com account, I uploaded mine there first and then attached through the 'insert image' button and selected the 'From URL' tab.
On my imgur page, I pulled up the photo I wanted, selected the size of the thumbnail I wanted (as original is very very large)... generally medium and large thumbnail are plenty big enough. Copied out the text in the BB Code option and paste it back into the CMON insert photo pop-up.
This gave me good control of the images but also allowed me to choose sizing options.
Imgur also has editing options, so you can tell from how it appears on the imgur site how it will appear on other sites (WYSIWYG).

If you are wanting to just upload the files, you could work with GIMP (free photo editing software... with a bit of a learning curve, but more utlities... think of it as the free photoshop) to do resizing and rotating. Just keep separate copies if you still want the original.

Thanks Grayfax. Off that it happened this time and not others. I really haven't changed anything from previous posts. I'll get the hang of it sooner or later.

I appreciate the tip. Cheers

I had the same, similarly inconsistent, problem at first, too, Captain. It makes no sense, but if I open the image on my computer (I have a Mac and it uses a program called Preview) and then rotate the image all the way around (literally click rotate 4 times), CMoN's site never pulls the sideways trick on me. I takes 5 seconds and works for me.

Thanks Saint. On my phone the pictures are right ways up, and at the very least, if I open the pictures in a new tab on my computer, they right themselves. Ah the learning curves of a new forum.

Update #7 SoP Dwarf Complete

I finished the base for the SoP Dwarf. The rock is made of cork with foliage made from Woodland Scenics and natural materials.

Malifaux Pere Ravage Update #1

Hi all,

Now that the first Dwarf SoP is finished, I thought I'd do something green. I'd ordered a few new models and Pere Ravage and Gas Pig was one of them. It's the old white metal mold as I understand the new versions are plastic. It's been a fairly quick paint job as the detail is light, but it's been very enjoyable so far. I hope to have it finished in one more sitting before moving on to the Gas Pig. I have an idea for a small vignette for it.

Id like to experiment with some OSL after painting the torch. Any tips for an OSL newbie?

Cheers

I haven't tried OSL yet, but any time I'm interested in the subject, I always go back to Bailey03's tutorial. He also talks about it in his WIP... let's see... what page was that? 26?
One day, I'll be brave enough to try it myself. That day is not today...

Thanks Grayfax. Very interesting read. I've found a few other tutorials as well, so I'll test some out and see how it goes. I'll basically glaze it on so I don't completely obscure the under colours.

Cheers

Malifaux Pere Ravage Update #2

Finished up Pere Ravage last night. Still don't have the hang of decent NMM Gold, but I'll chip away at it.

I'm happy with how the torch turned out and very pleased with the OSL. Not bad for a first time attempt in my opinion. I still think I may glaze a bit more yellow on to the torch though.

Any my comments and criticism appreciated.

Cheers
