Brian's WIP

Hey everyone!

I've been lurking around here for a while now trying to sponge knowledge off all the great painters, sculpters and crafters and finally got around to making an account. A little background about me: I've dabbled in all sorts of model painting over the years (planes, tanks, race cars), and finally landed on miniature painting about 6 years ago. After 6 months of fantastically chalky paint, and two-shade dry-brushing, I took a 4-year hiatus to work a job that involved living out of a suitcase. Two years ago, after finally settling into a more static career, I picked the brush back up and decided I was going to have my first fully painted Warmachine army. To avoid getting bogged down like so many projects before, I set rules upon myself to stick to tabletop quality. The endeavor was a success, and after about a year, I ended up with a reasonable-looking Cryx army. With that project done, I decided it was time to start pushing myself and expanding my skill-set, so for the past year or so I've been slowly alternating between trying to push quality, and trying to replicate the pushed quality quicker and more efficient.

Up until this point I've only ever painted 30mm miniatures, but I picked up some busts over the last couple months for when the time felt right to try something new, which brings me to here. It seemed fitting to open up a WIP thread starting with my first bust. I picked the Shennay bust from (I think) Ares Mythologic. It seemed like a good place to start for me, so her goes...

I started off with the face, followed by the rest of the skin tones. I'm fairly happy with the face, but I'm hoping that the eyebrows really pull it all together when I go back to paint them:

Thanks for looking; hopefully I'll have something new to show in the next couple days!

*(I posted something very similar yesterday morning, but it never got approved- the images may have been too large. Reading other threads it also seems that first posts sometimes disappear, so I'm resubmitting to see what happens. I'll delete one of the posts if they both come through)*

Great start to this and welcome aboard, I didn't see you mention if you were going to do more blending but the stand out problem for me is the step between the shade on the top left of her face and the mid tone, and the same (to a lesser extent) with the highlights on the cheek bones, if you smooth those outitll be a great improvement imo. Aside from that kudos on the eyes they look great

Thanks for the welcome and the comments!

Sick: I appreciate the feedback- I've been wanting to retouch the face, but have been holding myself back because I have a habit of never leaving things be. I can already tell that getting feedback here will be a great way to sort between when I'm being too anal, and when I should legitimately keep tinkering. The super uneven transition on the forehead is mostly just a shadow from the hair overhang, due to my crappy lighting, although I checked it out closer today and did notice that I could clean up the blend regardless (you'll be able to see this better in the new pics).

As for an update, I got some (but never enough) time to paint on the weekend and worked on the shirt and metals and some of the straps. I'm kind of feeling my way around in the dark as far as colours and whatnot, so I'm painting a bunch of things to 95% (with some totally sloppy/random colour tests here and there), with the intention of going back to balance everything when I'm happy with the overall placement. Anyways, without further adieu... (also my bbcode pics were labelled as spam so I'll try using the 'attach images' feature)

I decided to try a sort of stippled metal effect on the pauldrons, rather than try to get super smooth, polished metal-looking blends. It's a new thing for me, so any C&C is welcome:

For the neckpiece I tried to go for a pseudo-shiny black leather; I'm just hoping the highlights aren't too stark as to confuse it with the metal of the pauldrons:

Anyways, that's all for now. Hopefully I'll get some more work done in the next couple days.
Cheers :)

Ah yes I can see from the new pics it was the lighting causing me problems, nice work on the metals :) I like the splash of hreen in the hair too

Hi there, and welcome. That is a great start, I like the stippled metal effect you've gone for, and you've pretty much nailed the skin tones for me at least. Can't wait to see it finished.

Decided I may as well keep the updates rolling. Nothing major, but getting close to piecing together how to put all the colours together. I'm going to do the main top belt as red leather, and then the three studded ones as black leather to match the armpit straps. I'm going to save the hair for last because I want to see how everything looks before deciding if a green or purple highlight up front will look cool, or be overkill.

Until next time... :D

Oh wow, coming along nicely. I like the subtle colour variation here and there, it really keeps the look together.

So I've run out of things to paint that aren't hair.... I'm torn as to whether or not to keep the green or just go all brown. If I keep the green I definitely have to go stronger with the highlights at the top of her hair. Anyone have any thoughts/ideas on how to tie it all together. I've never painted hair before; it's a bit of a struggle.

The hair looks good. Actually it all looks incredible.

If you were to change the hair, I would keep the green but only for a thin strand or two.

To me the hair looks good as it is but if you wanted to instead of changing the highlights add a shine effect (like on shampoo adverts)

Thanks for the feedback guys! Being a sunny long weekend, I haven't really had any time to paint, but it's looking like today I'll have the chance to hunker down and get some work done. Foxtail- I like the idea of dumbing down the green to a couple strands of hair. That way it will still contrast all the warm shades in the hair and the face, and connect the eyes to the green leather without being overpowering and taking over the mini. I'll post once I've got something to show.
Cheers

So as hoped, I finally got some time to finish off the hair. I left the highlighting a lot more subtle on the backside, partly due to laziness, and partly from having a fairly focused light direction coming from the front. Looking at the pics I can see there are still a couple little bits to clean up. Aside from that though, the bust is pretty much done. I have a long way to go to get the results I'm eventually aiming for, but I'm happy with this as a first attempt. The Shennay bust was a great choice for a starter project, and was pretty fun to paint.
