Firstly thanks everyone for all the help and feedback on the sanguinary guard. I have just finished some death company. Having learnt from that I'm posting the finished pic up here first before uploading to the gallery. Any ideas for improvement very welcome I haven't sealed them so can still go back with the brush. I'm really hoping to improve my painting over the next while. I have more BA stuff after this and some meganobs and a nightbringer too. View attachment 6341

Looks like a nice bunch, well done. My only gripe is a bit the glowy air intakes, I'm not sure why they would glow, but that's just a matter of personal taste. :)

gonna sound like were ganging up but ditto on the intakes, exhaust are cool.
at the risk of getting bitch slapped by Meph for saying something stupid "why are they blue?"

I have some red guys coming don't worry. So those are AIR intakes on the front. I knew I was having too much fun with the blue.

I'm thinking I should paint over those blue air intakes? As promised here are the red guys- blood angels honour guard. These were second hand models with some basecoating etc, hence the pink? seals (not going to stay like that) The white was done but a bit messy so I've tidied it up, and the banner was also painted but I've pretty much re-done most of it. Normally I strip second hand models but thought I could just work with these ones as they were okish. In retrospect I'd probably have saved more time stripping them instead of tiding them up. Anyway this is turning into a ramble, so I'll just let you guys tell me what you think. They are still wip, I've got to highlight them up a bit more and do the weapons, gems and something more to that white.

Nice, I always find it's tricky to pull off shading red with a dark colour like a black but you seemed to have really pulled that off. What are you doing with the white? That could well be tricky :O

Mr.S.Marbo I've used a mix of vmc deep cadmium red and Gw's dark angels green for the shading, its applied in two thin quick layers. I'm thinking of changing the white to the cream/bone colour I have elsewhere.
I haven't finished off the honour guard yet. I did start something new. I've wanted to do some freehand stuff for a while and cleaning up that banner and looking at khavor's lovely rhino has inspired me to go for it. I've started off fairly simple by just copying the designs from the blood angels codex onto a predator. Sketched them on with pencil and then cleaned up a bit with a pen before the paint. Very wip still but its only one evenings work so far.

Good start on the freehand mate. It's looking good, but it'll need a lot of layers and depth to bump it up to awesome though.

Hope its ok if I revive this after all this time. I had a big break (some personal stuff I don't want to go into) from these guys and they have progressed only a very little. A bit of shading done on the predator.

I've been trying out some black and white,

The black on the vindicare is just two thin layers of black over a shadow grey basecoat with a little bit of a lighter grey highlight.
The white on the sanguinary priest/apothecary is maybe a bit more strange.(well I was reading kathyrn's tutorial on the dry pigments I like pastels for drawing with so thought I'd have a little experiment) I started with a thin layer of white and vmc sky-grey mix over the white spray-paint. Thats what you see on the right. Then I used some layers of grey and tan colour pastel powder, sealing with a little spray varnish, trying to go for a weathered look here. The first layer was very light so I kinda lashed it on after that and it ended up a bit heavier than I meant. I went back to the paint after this as I'd lost the white so I did a little layering with some white/grey mix and some white/bone mix then a little pure white and that the guy on the right. Sadly no other progress pics as the light was too bad that day and the photos came out terrible. I'm happy enough to keep him and finish him off with the other colours onthe chainsword, loincloth etc. I have two more of these guys to do so any feedback you guys have would be great. As for the vindicare I was aiming for a sort of x-men style graphic novel look to the black.
So what do you guys think?

First up you do lovely reds and the honor guard manage to look manly and dangerous, not easy with sculpted nipples. Thank god you did not do the golden.

The white one on the right looks the best, but also looks very grainy.

The black vindicare i loooove. Super idea for a matte black

Nightbringer wip

Marjedi, I think its grainy cos my can of spray was near the end so probably wasn't the best. Should smooth out with a few thin layers of paint. Glad you like the vindicare I've got some infinity ALEPH models (they're for christmas so no touching them just yet) and want to try a darker scheme than the usual one so the black is a kinda test, I want to try some purpley greys out with it.
I've started on a nightbringer. I had the model kicking around for a while, but the necron release has motivated me to have a bash at it. Just having fun with this one, the metal areas have just been blocked in really and need a bit of tidying up and some glazes etc. The spatter thingy going on is meant to be the start of starscape but its a bit strong at the moment so I'll try and kick it back a bit. Anyway so pretty wip still. Any thoughts?

Not too horrendous from far away, squint and he looks better. Really messy close up, best to close your eyes probably!

Woah... That's a cool torso...

And great job on the rest of the stuff. The freehands look great and the b&w tests are very interesting

Monolith wip

Thanks Meph. Love your massive stormraven btw.
Ok got some pics of the monolith, the red marble effect is more or less finished. Its mostly sponged on with a few squiggly lines added at the end. The metal just basecoated tiand the green rods need a bit of work gonna try for a very soft glow, maybe some energy crackles. Not really up on the fluff so no idea what other details I should pick out (probably not good if I do glowing air vents again). I'm hoping to do a crystalline effect on the big gemstone that goes on top 'cos I haven't tried that out before. (I think pics are a bit big cos I'd changed my jpeg compression rate for something else I'd been working on and I messed up half the pics resizing them.)

Uuhhmm did you paint it with any reference pictures? The few times i have painted marble it has been a big help.

Because i am sorry to say, this looks awfully messy to me. I think the white lines are too heavy, a lighter touch would be much better.

Well, in general I like the effect, some parts are perfectly spot on marble, others are a bit messy indeed. Overall not too shabby I'd say.
