Bailey03's WIP

Yeah, it's been a while since I've done any GW figures. But that's how I started out painting, so there's something that seems very comfy and familiar about it. Plus it's fun to paint some now that I actually know what I'm doing!

I made a little more progress on my space marine. This is my first real attempt at lighting effects. I still have some work to do, but I think it's getting there.

In the meantime, I've started on the second Sons of Medusa space marine. Here he is before I add all the weathering and paint chipping. I upped the contrast on the green. The highlights and shadows didn't pop as much as I'd like in the first one so I made some adjustments this time around.

These guys aren't something I typically like but yours look especially good, so much so I kinda want to paint one now. Excellent work sir.

Thanks, Milosh. That's very kind of you to say. I know what you mean though. I was turned off by GW figures for maybe 5 or 6 years. But joining CMoN seeing how really good painters can make their figures look (not mine, but figure's like Karol Rudyk's Vampire Lord, White Rabbit's Plaguernaught, or Volomir's Crimson Fists to name a few) it got me thinking maybe I should give GW another try. Plus those plastic figures are so much easier to cut up and convert than the metals ones. I've got an upcoming project that will take advantage of that. It's a nice diversion from my other figures. I'm sure once my package from Nocturna Models arrives the GW will go back on the shelf to rejoin the rest of my grey army. :smile-big:

What did you order from Nocturna? I too am awaiting a package of the two new girls they released.

Yeah, I saw your post about them on PlanetFigure, pretty awesome looking figures. I ordered Luz and then, to get the free shipping, I added Merlin and the Gatekeeper. I was tempted to get Alice too... but I already have so many projects and not enough time. I do hope they add some more sculpts to their Fairy Tale girls series though. In the meantime, I'm really looking forward to getting Luz but I'm concerned with my ability to do the figure justice. I have no idea how I'm going to get that skin tone. Don't suppose you have any thoughts or tips? I've also got the White Wolf figure from Andrea's Warlord Saga series. He's got a very similar skin tone so I'll probably paint him first to work out my mixes.

For anyone not familiar, here's Luz, one of the two new Malefic Time models from Nocturna

and here is the other one.

I think the way I'm going to approach it is to take Vallejo basic skin tone and add a tip of french blue from Jo Sonja to cool it down for the base. For the mid-tone & shadows I'll keep blueing it with more french blue. Highlites will probably be straight basic skin tone (it is very light). If this looks too blue I might use paynes grey instead.

We should paint them at the same time and compare notes.

Hmmm... interesting idea. I'll let you know when I get mine. I think we could at least start painting them at the same time. Considering how fast you made it through the Alice and the Landsknecht bust I think you'll be done with this one long before I am.

Still working on space marines and the white speaker. In the meantime I thought I'd post some pictures of the GW Cairn Wraith I finished a little while back. This was a figure I did just to experiment with some different techniques. It was also a good excuse to work on my base construction abilities. I was impressed with the miniature mentor video on bases and wanted to try out some of their ideas. Having just rewatched some of that tutorial I can see there's still a lot in there that I need to try. I liked the idea of a winter base for the wraith. I also tried to use the base to match the wind blowing through his robes.

I really like this and the flow of the composition from narrow bottom to wide base and back to narrow mini is nice.

I really like that model where is it from?

the marines are amazing OSL on the weapon was a lovely touch. Normally that style of chipping goes a bit cartoony but you've managed to pull it off really well while keeping it realistic too cant wait for more.

Thanks Milosh, KruleBear, Tee999, and coldone.

Coldone, the model is from Games Workshop. It's their Vampire Counts Cairn Wraith. You might also be interested in their Tomb Banshee. It's a little different look but the style is very similar to this one.
