i like it. the dark grunginess is appealing. your not afraid to use alot textures which is good but to bring your work to another level you just gotta refine these details a little more. some blending/glazing will do wonders in making better gradients with colours. and as said by taggi, a bit more contrast to make focal points on the model. nice work so far though ill be checking in on your forum more to see how its going

Done! All I need to do now is stain the wood and spray a sealer on it. I might add a few grass clumps as well but the painting is for all intents and purposes finished.

Thanks for all the replies as I was working on this, I was just looking back and I seem to have missed a bunch of really good suggestions. Seeing as how I haven't sealed it yet I'm going to actually act on some of them. So far I think I've got:

Highlights to both faces
More work on the beastlord's axe
Try to smooth out some of the transitions using glazes
Define the Dwarf's eyes and lip a bit better

Hopefully I'll get some of those improvements done this week. I'll keep everyone up to date. If you see something that I haven't included in the above list make sure you let me know!

Granddad!
I wouldn't expect terrific scores if this is the pic you're gonna use for your gallery, the top pic is fine but the following ones are too small, they all need to be the same width as the top one, scrolling down isn't a problem. Unless of course you're gonna submit a bigger pic to make use of the magnify facility
A couple of close ups of each mini would have been nice in there too

Apart from that it all looks pretty good

Good Luck with the auction/comp Carl. No time to do anymore given the looming deadline. Congrats on getting such a big piece completed in time!

Cheers, B.

Thanks everyone for the comments, here's the vote link: http://www.coolminiornot.com/246268

You are probably right about the pics mickc22, I don't really want to change the pictures though since my photography is terribly inconsistant and this set worked out pretty well. It is currently sitting at 7.8 which is a full point better than anything I've done before so I'm satisfied with the score.

Thanks again for all the comments and suggestions, hopefully I'll be starting a new project soon.

Hello Hillibilly Carl,

This is a big model. And these are not easy to paint. I have mentioned some critism above and though you have improved some points, I am sorry, but I think there could be made much more of this great idea.

Please dont misunderstood me, I like this really, but if I think about some techniques I waver between 7 and 8.

I am very curios, what you will paint next!

Greetings, Taggi

Don't worry about hurting my feelings Taggi, I appreciate your comments and suggestions. Some of them are above my skill level but I will definitely keep them in mind and try them out in my next projects. I should have done more with this one but to be honest I was afraid to wreck it by trying something new on it. I wouldn't have cared if it was something I was painting just for me, but this one is being auctioned for charity so I didn't want to risk it.

And between 7 and 8 is far above my normal skill level so I'm very flattered by that score, thanks!

I think my next major project is going to be the Bretonnian King from Games Workshop. I'm not sure when I'll start that though. I'll probably take a bit of a break and do some table-top army painting which I probably wouldn't post here but it should be in the next few months anyway.

Best of luck to you Mr. Hillbilly...

I really like the saturated tones...it helps set the scene very nicely. Well done all around!
