A terrible day in Norway

it also makes it more likely that it will be an isolated event. were it international, questions about other cells would loom. this guy claims 10 other people made plans in his manifesto, though. whether this is some distortion in his twisted mind, or something more sinister remains to be seen.

seriously, how do you punish a crime like this? i doubt Norway has the death penalty, but even so, i think thats inappropriate - too easy. maybe toss him in to the general pop of max security prison and let the goons do their work - even hardened criminals hate child killers. in the states a pretty boy like that would get eaten up.

I think their way of handling things have been pretty well thought out, it's not like they haven't had their fair share of murderers and rapists.

Yeah, I guess what I mean to say is that since Norway's legal system has worked perfectly well for them in the past as it should considering their culture, this attack caught them completely off guard. I shouldn't say they were unprepared though. And yeah, of course they've had their fare share of crime, but as the country with the lowest homicide rate (I think) the crime rate is no where near many other countries.

i doubt Norway has the death penalty
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was abolished in the early 1900s.

You know, unfortunately, there isn't a suitable punishment for this type of crazy. Justice will never be served. It's just a horrible horrible tragedy.

hes actually charged with two counts (one per attack), and they can hold him so lang as he is a threat (forever).
what i dont get is why they cant charge him with 80+ murders, and 2 acts of terrorism. they seem like distinct crimes to me, each does not necessitate the other.

I heard there is a chance he will, as the first person ever in norway, be tried for committing a war-crime. this could give him 30 years in prison. apparently. in addition, we have this way of just... "keeping" the criminals we don't see fit to let wander around the country. i don't really know the proper wording for it, but that's basically what it is.

Thing is, though, that in his manifesto, he stated that during his trial, the court would be his stage to the world. he would try to propagandize the world to spread his words (he even had the guts to ask the police to drive to his home and get some kind of home-made uniform for him to wear during court (which was of course denied)). thankfully, the whole ordeal was done behind closed doors. they say the police doesn't even let him know anything of the surrounding world's happenings these days. they say that during every hearing he keeps asking how many he killed, replying how much he enjoys the publicity.

a friend of mine (or acquaintance, perhaps) was on the island himself. he survived by playing dead, even when shot through the shoulder, and was the one to call the police. i admire him deeply.

Im from Norway but was on vacation when it happend, surreal to sit in a restaurant and watch the news on cnn of something like this happening in your own country.

I think the last time anyone got the death sentence in Norway was after ww2, for turning traitor against the country 10 people or so got shot to death. This mad man will be accused of terrorism which if I'm not mistaken will give him 30 years in prison. But there are holes in the system and I hope the keep him in a cell and have him rot to death. Some violent gangs in Norway have already said something to the effect that he will die or be punished severly in prison, I doubt he will live through 30 years to be honest. To many people want this man dead. If he ever was to be released someone would probably give him a bullet in the head the moment he left the prison.

The guy is not insane. If you're insane by clinical terms i.e. psychotic, bi-polar etc, you are not able to pull of what he has done.

He is meticulous, intellegent and calculated in the extreme. Given these characteristics and his actions, I'd not say he's insane, as that is in a way an insult to the poor poeple who actually are.

I'd say he's nothing short of pure evil. He knows what he's done to the utmost extent, and it was hate that drove him. What other term would be applicable?

He has stated in his manifest that he is not a nazi, and in fact hates nazism. Ironic, when the only person I can think of in recent european history who comes close to this persons character, is a certain one-testicled Austrian corporal...

He certainly is intelligent, and calculated, but that does not necessarily mean he isn't insane. Insanity doesn't necissarily mean a person is incapable of fully understanding their situation, but rather that they are exhibiting some sort of abnormal psychology in an extreme sense. This guy bears the hallmarks of a psychopath - someone who demonstrates an abnormal lack pf empathy.
