90mm Chaos Warrior

Hiyas all! Thought I'd introduce myself by showing something I'm currently working on. As you can tell, I'm a newbie here as well as to sculpting. This is technically my 2nd figure sculpt but I kinda think of it as my first being that the actual first looks like it was sculpted by a blind, one armed vegetable...... Not a whole lot to look at yet. Very little has been added since these pics were taken. He is currently right at 100mm to the top of his "head".
Based more on the warriors in the trailers for Mark of Chaos and Battlemarch video games than the tabletop minis.

Heres a few pics. Sorry if they are a little large....
Comments, critiques, and questions always welcomed! Just be gentle, I'm still very new to this stuff!

NEW to it?! Looks like you've taken to it like a duck to water! Impressive stuff, far better than i'd manage if I took a crack at it, i'm sure!
Keep going with it, shaping up real nice. If you've any questions there's a wealth of decent sculptors about here to help. Welcome to CMoN! =)

Hmm. Torso looks a bit too long. Or legs too short. Maybe shoulders a little too broad. However, chaos warriors might be like that. What do I know?:) These are fairly small details anyway, but its better to point them out early.

firstly welcome to this place of wonderous delights.
good start with this sculpt, you appear to have painted yourself into a corner with regards to the torso, let me explain, its a bit too broad and a bit too long for the legs, the easy fix would be to cut it at he waist shave off about 5mm and also make him a bit narrower as well (wish i could do that myself lol) this will cause problems with the right arm and shield but you can fix that by placing his feet on a slightly raised base to that of the shield (strategically placed rock formation should sort that). i presume you are going to put armour on him, if you leave the torso as is he's going to look a bit broad. great start tho, one to watch.

Hello. I really like it so far. I kind of agree with the comments about the torso being a bit broad. You have to consider that it will be even broader and bigger with the heavy armour they wear. Still, it is amazing for a first/second attempt. He is Chaos afterall, so who is to say that the gods haven't gifted him with an incredible barrel chest? Cool stuff.

I am interested in sculpting too, but have no idea whatsoever so I have a couple of questions: 1) what have you sculpted it from? 2) what are the armour/weapons made from?

Looks really good so far, just maybe a bit too broad at the torso.

Firat of all...WOW! thanks for all the great feedback! It's my opinion that peer critique is one of the best tools in any given person's arsenal. So, thank you!
When I get home from work, I'll take a good look at the length of the torso. Looking at the pictures now, it does seem maybe a tad too long. I wonder though, how much of it is caused by the pictures. Not sure, but I will definately check it.

@flagship---- it is all sculpted with Magic Sculpt--which I absolutely LOVE! All done over a brass wire armature. The only other materials is sheet plastic for the shield and copper foil for the strips on the leg armor. My first attempt at sculpting, the one I won't dare show:sick:, was done with milliput and a mix of milliput/kneadatite(green stuff), which was ok, until I tried magic sculpt. It made a world of difference!

Thanks again guys(and gals if there are any)!!!

Interesting - as I am currently getting used to milliput/green stuff. Do you have to cure magic sculpt in an oven, like sculpey/fimo?

Nope, Magic Sculpt is an Epoxy Putty. It air hardens like Milliput and green stuff. Usually, I will stick a sculpted item under a 100w light bulb to speed harden it. It only takes about 20ish minutes for most things, then you just let it cool off for 5 or 6 minutes. (it is VERY hot after the lamp treatment) Then you can keep right on sculpting. Pieces that are ultra thin might have a tendancy to crack under the heat so I wouldn't advise doing that.

Ok, after some careful looking and checking and what not, it does appear that his torso is a bit tall. It kinda sucks as I was wanting him to be taller/larger than a normal fella. They appear to be very noticeably larger in the game trailer and that was what I was really hoping for. But, everywhere else I have seen them they are normal sized. So let the sawing begin!!!!

Alright, cut him in half, cleaned up the cut ends a bit, ready to pin, glue and fill. Not sure if you can tell from the pic with the cut line showing, but I think I got him shortened enuff. I put the shield in there to help judge where his hand will be. I thought I would try and get a general consensus before I stuck him back together. Knee guards are also in progress.

It's much better, but still too tall in the torso. At least according to my measurements based off this picture (which are probably not all that accurate). The height from the bottom of the feet to the crotch should be the same as from the crotch to the top of the head. Generally speaking, of course.

Thank christ all I have to worry about is what pretty colour I can use, is all I have to say to that haha! This sculpting business taxes my brain enough as it is! Have to say though, for a beginner, you are pwning. I'm seriously, SERIOUSLY impressed. Really digging how smooth everything is coming out. By the time you're done with this thing, I shit you not, if I didn't know it was magisculpt, i'd swear it was resin cast or something. The armour seems to be perfectly symmetrical. Can't flaw it. When you nail this proportions dealio, you'll be cooking on gas for sure!

ED: I've also just realised why I love this armour so much. Reminds me of the Paladin AF armour from FFXI. Ahhh , Memories.

I think it the torso still...a bit disproportional.
You needs to move the boobs up some.
I think he'll look dwarfish if you don't slim him a little as well.

But I would've left it alone and made the armor to hide it...LOL.

Glad i'm not the only one that would have just hidden it with armour haha. Think it's the saggy moobs that throw me off just now, but that won't matter if it's covered with a breastplate anyway.

The thing with hiding disporpotional body with armour is that it will make everything only look more bulkier. It is much easier to make the sculpt too thin and then make bulkier armor or clothing to make up for it. So if it looks too wide now, it will only be more so with armor. This will be great with couple more modifications to the torso!:)
