Orc Warlord GD Oz 04
This was my entry in Fantasy Single for the Golden Demons Australia 2004. He scored the Silver loosing out to the Slayer winner model. The basis of the model is one of the big Space Ork warbosses, the one unleashing his pet squig. My mate Numbat saw the potential as a cool single in him so away I went. In past years I'd been entering unconverted models for Games Day just concentrating on my painting, this year I pull out the green stuff big time. Converted stuff on the model: Removal of squig and chain as well as padding on pointing arm. Removal of big shooter on other arm. Removal of pouches on his belt. Horns were bent around to a more natural shape. Top knot added with sculpted leather binding and skull at front. Metal band with rivets added to centre of helmet. Armour plate added to his bum. Resculpted bicep to fill in the area the gun was. Chainmail sculpted over shoulders and across kneck Shield added Sword added Armour sculpted over pointing hand (I really should have used brown stuff for this but did it with green stuff anyway) then rivets and studs on his knuckles were added. Mushrooms sculpted over wire. Backbanner added. After all that he was a big and impossing mini. It had been years since I had painted any orcs so I pulled out my Grimgor from a couple years ago and used him as a reference for skin tone, though I adde a fair bit more brown wash to add some more warmth into his skin. The metal armour was were I really went to town experimenting with techniques I've seen recently from the well known French painters. I used many brown washes to rust up and weather the armour plates. I also added subtle checkers to the armour plates on his helmet and belly as well as more obvious checkers to the sides of his sword. The rest of his clothes were down in very earthy tones using brand new Matisse paints that I had just gotten. Overall I am very happy with the result. Comments welcome.
