I think a desert type feel would fit the colour scheme of the mini well base wise, as for the painting, looks good, the weapon really sticks out in the contrastic colour.

I've always been a fan of simple sand/fine gravel bases with some static grass, quick, simple, and looks good

I think Errex's idea is a good way to go. I would even suggest perhaps sculpting on some ruined "stone" tiles to kind of give it a little more umph.
