Magic Realm Pilgrim
I am producing a prototype of Magic Realm playing pieces using minis I have on hand whenever possible. Magic Realm was a game put out by Avalon Hill in 1976 and in my opinion is one of the greatest board games ever made. There are 16 characters to choose from, each being an archtype of fantasy literature. The characters have cards detailing their abilities and equipment on one side and with a painting of the character on the other (bottom image). Your character is represented on the board by a 1 inch diameter round cardboard counter (inset in the rear picture) with a unique simbol. The 1 inch size just screamed miniature to me. Because these are meant to replace cardboard counters, I have made the base represent the counter as much as possible. This is the character called the Pilgrim. The Pilgrim is "an adventurous cleric...." This time the mini didn't match the painting very well, but was passable and I'm doing this with minis I had lying around for the most part so since this guy was in ragged clothes and carrying a staff (pitchfork before the snip) I figured he'd do. When I do a repeat set I know exactly which Reaper mini I'll use. This is a pretty poor sculpt by Parker Brothers for a game called Lionheart. The game is not very good and the minis are of varying quality, but there are enough of them to field a decent-sized Bretonnian army so I paid my $3 at a garage sale for it! Colors used are primarily vallejo flat brown and flat flesh and reflective green.
